E-WASTE MANAGEMENT
WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT
E-WASTE MANAGEMENT?
Government of India has made it mandatory in the E-waste rules
2016 to recycle E-wastes through the approved recyclers.
But why?
Let’s look forward to know more...
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a term for electronic
products that have become unwanted, non-working or
obsolete, and have essentially reached the end of their
useful life. These include items like computers, interactive
boards, tablets, UPS, Remote receiver, interactive flat panel
etc which is being used in schools..
WHAT IS E-WASTE?
TOXIC CONSTITUENTS IN E-WASTE
▶ Printed Circuit boards - Lead & cadmium
▶ Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) - Lead oxide & cadmium
▶ Switches & flat-screen monitor - Mercury
▶ Computer Batteries - Cadmium
▶ Capacitors & transformers - Polychlorinated Biphenyls
▶ Printed circuit boards, plastic casing cables - Brominated Flame Retardant
▶ Cable insulation/coating - Poly Vinyl Chloride
Components & its constituents
Worried?FACTS!
▶ In 2016, India was ranked as the fifth largest
generator of electronic waste in the world.
▶ India generates more than two million tonnes
of E-waste annually.
▶ India accounts for roughly 4% of e-waste
generated annually.
▶ More than 95% of India’s e-waste is processed
by informal workers and waste pickers.
E-waste
management
can solve this
problem.
HOW TO MANAGE E-
WASTE?
This informal approach of E-waste management
involves acid burning and open incineration, creating
toxic gases with severe health and environmental
consequences.
Addressing this problem, the Government has made it
mandatory to recycle E-wastes through the approved
recyclers.
▶ Recycling processes are in accordance with the
standards or guidelines prescribed by the Central
Pollution Control Board from time to time.
▶ No damage is caused to the environment during storage
and transportation of e-waste.
▶ Recycling processes do not have any adverse effect on
health and the environment.
▶ The residue generated during the recycling process is
disposed of in an authorised treatment which does not
harm the environment.
Authorised recyclers ensures:
WHY E-WASTE MANAGEMENT IS IMPORTANT?
▶ E-waste contains many valuable, recoverable materials such as aluminium, copper, gold, silver,
plastics, and ferrous metals which can be used further.
▶ Despite producing new electronic equipment from virgin resources, electronic equipment can be
refurbished, reused, and recycled which can further conserve natural resources and energy
▶ E-waste contains toxic and hazardous materials including mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium,
chromium, and chemical flame retardants that can leach into the soil and water and damage the
natural resources.
BENEFITS OF RECYCLING E-WASTE
▶ Protected surroundings: Safe recycling ensures sound management chemicals such as lead and mercury.
▶ Conserving resources: Recycling recovers valuable materials from old electronics which can further be
used to create new products.
▶ A good help: Donating used electronics benefits the community by passing on ready-to-use equipment to
those who need it.
▶ Saving landfill space: E-waste is a growing waste stream and recycling them can conserve landfill space.
▶ Saving nature: Recycling saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emission.
WHAT TO DO & WHAT NOT?
▶ Always look for information on the catalogue of
your product for end-of-life equipment handling.
▶ Allow Authorised Recyclers to repair and handle
electronic products.
▶ After using, drop used electronic products,
batteries or any accessories at your nearest
Authorized E-Waste Collection Centres.
▶ Try disconnecting the battery from the product,
and ensure any glass component is protected
against breakage.
▶ Try not to dismantle electronic products on your
own.
▶ It is important to not to throw electronics in bins
showing “Do not Dispose” sign.
▶ Do not give away e-waste to scrap dealers or rag
pickers.
▶ Do not dispose of your product in garbage bins
along with municipal waste which ultimately
reaches landfills.
