This document discusses the growing problem of electronic waste (e-waste). It notes that the average lifespan of electronics like smartphones, tablets, laptops, TVs, and computers is only 1-5 years. While consumers enjoy upgrading to new technologies, the vast number of obsolete devices that are discarded each year poses environmental and health risks. The document estimates that over 36 million smartphones alone were discarded in just one quarter of 2012. It calls for solutions to address the large volumes of e-waste from common consumer electronics that are ending up in landfills.
