Green-ict participated to a morning workshop on the subject of Green-IT. Three presentations have illustrated the Green-IT concept : one on Governance, another on Website Optimization and a last one on Project Management.
Green-ict is proud to take the opportunity of the next "Get Together" event to share its vision on how governance approach may complement technical approach in helping ITers to positively impact the environment.
Tanguy has described to the audience why there would be a need for croporate environmental governance of IT. A lot a questions and thoughts have been exchanged during this 1h30 workshop. Although the workshop was didn't intend to bring final answer on "to go green or not to go green", the bunch of IT decision makers present that night went back to work with a better awareness of the two facets of Green-IT and where it may head to. Ahead of the main benefits they may get from such initiatives, attendees also understood the numerous side-effects sustainable projects may have in a IT department ... and beyond ...

I separated one slide into many to make easier for readers to follow the content as each slide has heavy information.

When it comes to Green IT, businesses have been reactive. Interest in Green IT rises significantly when energy prices increase, and drops just as quickly when prices flatten out. This is typical of the ad-hoc approach taken by most organizations which has led to inconsistent results. This research will help organizations determine:
•Why Green IT is important.
•Examples of Green IT opportunities.
•The state of Green IT today.
•How to implement a successful Green IT program.
In this storyboard, learn how a strategic approach to Green IT and a longer-term commitment to sustainability can positively impact the bottom line.

[Oil & Gas White Paper] Gas Measurement and Analysis to Support FinancialsSchneider Electric
A powerful tool supporting enterprise financials, decision making, and the global environment.
Deregulation and liberalization of the natural gas industry in the U.S. and Europe — and rising natural gas trade activity in general due to environmental concerns — are opening markets and increasing hydrocarbon movements. This globalization trend is resulting in an increasingly complicated natural gas supply chain that requires standard business processes to assimilate new best practices. As supply and sales interfaces increase, measurement and accounting systems must become more interoperable, accurate and secure to support efficiency and competitiveness.
An advanced, comprehensive gas pipeline measurement and analysis system can monitor flow rates and other pipeline parameters continuously and automatically validate, estimate, balance and edit measurements, with complete documentation. This robust functionality adds value for the enterprise in several ways. It makes accurate data available in real time to accounting processes to assure accurate energy calculations for billing and transactional balancing. Real-time composition determinations assure the operation is satisfying the contracted transaction with respect to quality metrics, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emission potential. Accurate real-time assessment of gas delivery vitals supports operations decision making.
The functionalities of such a gas measurement and analysis system enable best practices vital in today’s more-complicated hydrocarbon transmission operations and transactions. The system provides the quantity and quality of measurements necessary for accurate accounting and billing. Validation functions are completed with full transparency. Estimation functions support system balance and avoid accounting closing delays. Continuous monitoring identifies equipment failures and supports effective maintenance. GHG data support reduction action plans. These value-added data are all made available in real time across the enterprise to improve productivity and competiveness, operations efficiency, customer service and corporate governance.
I wrote this paper (16pg report) as a final capstone to complete my independent research requirement. This paper is a literary analysis focusing on many important factors for reducing power and environmental waste and adopting Green Computing methods in general and in regards to practically applying this information to a real world situation. This paper will take a look at several green initiatives currently under as well as future outlooks. The intention of this research is to inevitably gain a base of knowledge in order to develop a green plan for my department at Student Affairs Marketing and to educate our employees on what they can do to improve upon or impact in the ever growing field of green computing and discuss our options.
Along with the paper, I came up with a Green policy for my previous employer that they made a permanent plan. After all my work was complete, I had to present my research and findings to my class and the faculty of the department.

Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT whose goals are to reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote the recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste. Green computing is the term used to denote efficient use of resources in computing. This term generally relates to the use of computing resources in conjunction with minimizing environmental impact, maximizing economic viability and ensuring social duties. Green Computing concentrates on energy efficiency, reducing resource consumption and disposing of electronic waste in a responsible manner. Green computing is the environmentally responsible use of computers and related resources. Such practices include the implementation of energy-efficient central processing units (CPUs), servers and peripherals as well as reduced resource consumption and proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste). Computers today have become a necessity not only in offices but also at homes.
According to a well-argued, climate change "has to be considered as the biggest
market failure the world has ever known before. There is scientific consensus that the world has a little
time to deal with increased emissions of greenhouse gases and climate change. The aim of this paper is
to promote the implementation of new Information Technology companies in order to get a grip on
consumption and energy efficiency in industrial sectors that make up the business. At the present time,
we thought it needed to boost the use of ICTs as a powerful tool for the preservation of the
environment and educate both employees and employers in using them to build a new business
network aware and directed toward sustainable economy. We believe that the ICT sector can play an
important role in reducing carbon emissions. Information technologies have the potential to reduce
overall carbon emissions by 15% by 2020, this 15% is between five and ten times the energy they
consume. We consider four main areas in which the application of ICT has enormous potential in
reducing harmful emissions and create a relief for the health of the planet: Motor systems, Logistics,
Buildings and Grids.

Need for all actors of the IT storyFirst two questions also highlight the need for comparing “pure CO2” and other GHGs% IT energy consumption in the servicing industry : 50 à 70 %We won’t enter here into the various models to help create some common ground for such publications; just bear in mind that although measuring Scope is not that easy to determine; not to speak when part of the computing power is virtualized to the cloud.Si l’onveut comparer différents DCs, ilestévidentqel’on a besoin d’un standard;Si l’onveutvoir son propre DC (sapropreinformatique) évoluer, il “suffit” de bien fixer son propre scope et s’ytenir.Highlight the fact that the graphic demonstrate a number of direct actors the (only) the energy consumption issue : Procurement chooses the Energy providers, Facilities build DC, Infra chooses and manages Equipments,… developers optimize CPU usage for a certain work to be achived (efficiency) while Analysts and business help making things effective.
By enlarging the thinking from pure (and limited) Green-IT to Sustainability, We enclose Finance … where the mmost obvious operational cost is energy; reducing energy consumption is fully aligned with financial performance. The Green-IT SGM framework is multidimensional :addresses 5 (IT) governance domainsanalyses the contingencies gathers various regulations under a single umbrellacalculates 5 maturity levelscomprises 4 phases keeping 3 perspectives in mind: 3PsGreen-IT when taken as part of more holistic Sustainability, becomes an enable for over-performance !!
We’ve see the biggest challenge is to align all stakeholders in a single direction. ‘have to identify the precise list of stakeholders … and maybe append that list.4 reasons:MarketingAccuracy of Assessment – because holistic topic requires global reachingPrepare ground for change management - & set up the right network of communication.Who’s responsible for what ?
