Indigeneous Exotic and Crossbred
• 80% of the Indigenous
cattle are Non-descript and
20% belong to 37 breeds
recognised by National
Bureau of Animal Genetic
Resources(NBAGR).
• There are 13 breeds of
Water buffaloes and they
are indigenous.Source: 19th National Livestock Census

Cattle Comparison
Cattle Breed Strengths Weaknesses
Indigenous
Bovine
Breeds
•Sturdy, endowed with the quality of
heat tolerance, resistance to diseases
and ticks
•Ability to thrive under extreme
climatic conditions and survive with
low inputs
•More disease resistance
•Low genetic potential for milk
production
•Average yield is only 2.3Kg/day for
cows
•Average lactation period is only180-
200 days for cows
Exotic and
Crossbred
Bovine
•Milk productivity of Exotic and
Crossbred cattle is much higher than
the Indigenous breeds
•Average yield is 7.02Kg/day for cows
•Average lactation period is 250-275
days for cows
•Perform optimally only under a high
cost input farm management system
•Unable to bear the extreme harsh
climatic conditions
•Vulnerable to incidence of animal
diseases
•This causes decline in milk production
and reproductive efficiency
Opportunity to upgrade livestock through modern practices.
Current Scenario
• The bovine population in India is owned by 60m marginal,
small and medium farmer households with an average
herd size of 2-3 milch animals.
• The figures of high production are reflective of the large
numbers of bovine population rather than that of high
productivity and resource efficiency.
• Dairying activity is a major supplementary source of
income for these farmers. However, the Indian Farm
Management System is typically a Low Input, Low Output
system with low productivity.
The Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision for
doubling the farmers incomes, makes the
adoption of the strategy to enhance the
share of income from animal rearing
imperative.
Shortcomings in Animals Trade Market
No of animals sold annually Amount involved
17 million Rs 340,000 million
• No authentic organized market –Decentralised, fragmented and dispersed for
indigenous breeds- being sold in haats/animal fairs etc.
• Difficult to get quality- disease free high genetic merit germplasm.
• Multiple agencies for semen, embryos, calves, heifers and adult bovines.
• Information asymmetry- Certified milk yield/pedigree/elite germplasm
information not readily available for farmer.
• Misleading valuation due to lack of traceability and tracking.
• Other malpractices
• Animals are fed special diets to increase milk yield.
• Animals are not milked a day before sale to falsify yields.
• Horns removed to mislead for their age.
• Teeth filed to conceal real age of animals.
E-Pashudhan Haat – Web Portal
Aims and Objectives:
• E-Trading Market portal for livestock germplasm and additional
related services.
• Will connect farmers with breeders - Central, State, Co-operative
and private agencies.
• Real time authentic certified information on availability of
germplasm.
• Centralized repository of information for Central and State
Governments.
Details of the Portal
Direct downloads and access to sire directory
• Will provide direct access to the farmers/ breeders to various
organizations/sources wherein frozen semen, embryos and
livestock certifications are available.
• Will connect farmers to 56 semen stations (20 states), 4 CHRS (4
States) and 7 CCBFs (6 states) in the country.
• Details like, animal / frozen semen ID, progeny particulars (sire
directory), rates and other terms & conditions will be available on
designated pages of the portal.
• Farmers can directly get the details like address, contact numbers,
photo gallery etc. of individual Institutes / Agriculture universities
in States.
Details of the Portal
Exclusive site for farmers as Farmers platform
• The Farmers platform on the main menu of the website will
provide
• 3 options in Germplasm marketplace for Animals, Frozen Semens and
Embryos
• List of suppliers
• It will establish links between “farmer to farmer” and “farmer to
Institutes”.
• The dissemination of the information to farmers will be through
landline and mobile phone.
Details of the Portal
Dynamic operations for report generations.
• For dynamic operations the real time data will be updated by
periodical data entries and will be linked to main portal.
• Semen stations, CCBFs, CHRSs and breeders societies will be
provided with data entry forms and one time login & password for
making periodical data entries in the system.
• Data will be used for sorting, monitoring and generation of reports
for:
• The availability of Bulls / Bull Calves region wise.
• Availability and stock position of frozen semen doses State wise / Region
wise/ Breed wise.
• Retrieving periodic reports on production / availability etc.
Targeted Outcomes
For Farmers:
• One stop portal for bovine breeders, sellers and buyers.
• Creating and Comparative Farm Network
• Making Farmers exchange local knowledge and resources
• Availability of disease free germplasm with known genetic merit.
• Minimizes the involvement of middlemen.
• Sale only of tagged animal with Nakul Swasthya Patra.
• Preservation of diverse indigenous bovine breeds in the country.
• Increase in milk production and productivity.
• Increase in farmers’ incomes.
For Institutes:
• Demand and supply of various items
