DVD Menus
• The purpose of DVD menus is essentially to
replace the title sequence, this is because with
a DVD you are able to fast forward and skip
the title sequence; you are not given the
opportunity with a DVD menu, so therefore
the menu has to entice the viewer, it also has
to suspend reality so that the film essentially
becomes the only thing that matters to the
  viewer at that particular time.
The Importance of DVD Menus
• DVD menus are important because they serve
the purpose of title sequences as they cannot
be avoided and are used to make the viewer
suspend reality and focus in on the film itself.
How Are DVD Menus Enhanced By
          Motion Graphics
• Motion graphics are used in DVD menus to
enhance the menu, this is because it means that
it is not only a static picture in it but also involves
elements, snippets and cut-scenes from the film
(these are composited together to create the
effect instead of having just a still image as part
of the menu) to give the viewer a taste of what
  the film is like.
• Motion graphics may also be used within a DVD
menu in order to help set the pace and mood of
  the movie.
Design Choices
• It is important to make good design choices
because everything needs to be in sync to the
rest of the film and the pace of it. It is also
important to have appropriate typography in
relation to what the film is about, this is in
order to show the consistency, continuity and
fluency in all aspects of the film.
Typography
• The typography used in DVD menus and films as a whole is
key to setting the atmosphere of the film for example if a
the film was originally a comic, then using Comic Sans MS
as a font would be appropriate as it would fit with whole
  comic feel of the DVD.
• The size of the font used in a DVD menu has to be
appropriate to the genre of the film as well as consistent
and fluent so that everything is able to flow well.
• The used colours for the typography add a different
dimension to the Menus and Films of today, for example if
a horror film or DVD uses a white font, it adds a feeling of
mystery and fear to the film, therefore implying to the
viewer that the should expect to be freaked out.
Colour Schemes
• Potential colour scheme for DVD menus play
an integral part in the effect that is created by
a DVD menu as it help set the tone for what
the film is going to be about for example, if
you have a colour pallet of mainly dark colours
to use for the menu that may give the viewer
the impression that the film is orientated
around a dark theme e.g. The Twilight series.
Movements
• Movements are Important in both title sequences
and menus for example in Pink Panther the way
the title sequence is moved by the main
character potentially gives the viewer the idea
that the film is going to be playful and more
  directed towards young audiences.
• In DVD menus movements are used to make the
experience more interactive and engaging in
order to get the reader involved in the movie in
  more than one way.
• In order for a DVD menu to
be successful it needs to have
                                     Overview
    an appropriate colour
    scheme and motion graphics,
    needs to be well
    synchronised and have the
    correct sound track.
• I think films such as Pink
    Panther fit all of these
    criteria; This is because it
    uses the colour pink which
    corresponds with the title of
the movie, the colour of the
    main character as well as
    giving the audience the
impression that it is going to
    be a joyful film directed
    towards children . This also
    means that the simplicity of
    the title sequence and the
film as a whole makes a lot of
    sense.
