  2. Hello and welcome! Thank you for coming and for listening to what I have to share with you today. My name is Jillian Dudley. I have been a resident of Virginia Beach for the past 14 years. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Special Education from Old Dominion University and my Master of Education in History from Liberty University. I taught sixth Social Studies and Science to children with special needs for 5 years. I am currently a student again at Old Dominion University worked towards a Master of Education in Library Science. I hope to work as a school library very soon. I have always been a huge advocate for technology in the classroom. This past semester I took LIBS 602 Production of Instructional Materials. In this class I learned more about tools that I as familiar with before and I also introduced to new ones. And that is why I am here today to share the educational benefits of four technology tools that you will hopefully take back with you and use in your libraries and classrooms.
  3. The four tools I am going to talk about today are PODCASTS, INFOGRAPHICS, WEBSITES AND PRESENTATION TOOLS.
  4. The first tool I would like to share with you today is Podcasting. If you are not familiar with podcasting; podcasting is a way of recording audio messages or content and then broadcasting to your listeners. Podcasting has been around for quite some time, but lately that has been a huge push for the educational benefits. Podcasts work in three different ways. They can teacher-created content, external content, for example NPR or student created content. I will talk a little about each one. For teacher created content, teachers can use podcasts in various ways. They can record their lectures and post on their websites. This works at all levels, elementary, middle, high school and most definitely at the college level. Podcasts are perfect for students who may have missed a day of school or will be out for an extended leave and want to stay caught up on what is going on with the unit. Teachers can also use podcasts to share short messages such as what the homework is for the night, the fact that they will be absent and a substitute will be present. Podcasts can be especially useful in the beginning of the school year where teachers or librarians can send out a welcome message that talks about the library or the class, and include information on grading, projects and what to expect from the library or from the class. Podcasts can be updated daily, weekly or just when the teacher needs to get a message out. The second function of podcasts are through external content. This is very popular. With external content, so many doors are opened up to students. They can listen to podcast from teachers around the world, experts in a particular field and hear news from around the world. There are thousands of podcasts on the internet. Teachers and librarians can help students find the right ones for students, and they can carefully select the ones to share in the classroom or library as well. The final function is student created content. Students have the opportunity to create their own podcasts. The beauty of this, is it crosses all content classes – math, social studies, science, English and even elective courses such as home economics, drama, public speaking. The options are endless. Students can work together or in a group sharing what they have learned on a topic and communicating with other students in their school and even as far as other students from around the world. Let’s talk a little about the functionality and limitations of podcasts. There are many functions. To begin, podcasts expand our world. We are no longer limited to our classroom, or even our school, podcasts connect classrooms from around the world. Second, to access podcasts, more often than not, especially educational podcasts, they are going to be free. Third, we open up our students to content that they otherwise would not be able to access. 4th, this is 21st century learning at its best. Students responds well to technology and they are very savvy; sometimes to teach, we have to speak the language of our students and content delivered through media and their devices is exactly what they are familiar with. Which transitions right into the fifth point – learning is mobile! Students are not just learning in the classrooms, but they are learning on the go , in the car, at their friends’ house, at home, even when they’re on vacation, they have access to their learning. The last and certainly not the least is adaptable learning. Podcasts is perfect for children and adults with learning disabilities and is adaptive for the various learning styles. Students can slow down, pause and reply the content that they learn, making it possible for them to their at their own pace and the way that they learn best. The only real limitations when it comes to podcasts would be economic restrictions. For students who want to access podcasts at home, it may not be possible if they don’t have internet, or the devices they need to access to content. In this case, it becomes necessary to learn early on about your students, their situation and how best to use podcast in your libraries and in your classrooms.
  5. One of the best places to find educational podcasts is through ITUNES, there are hundreds of thousands of podcasts that can be downloaded to your tablet, computer or iPhone.
  6. On the screen I am sharing 3 ways you can connect podcasts directly to your curriculum. The first is for a poetry lesson. A huge component of poetry is how it sounds spoken aloud. After delivering a poetry lesson, have students write their own poem and then record it . Play back the podcasts for the students in the class to hear. Two more general uses: Use podcasts, every Monday to discuss the news from your chosen podcast news source. And third, locate and find a podcast of a scientist or historian related to the curriculum
  7. I am sharing with you here three links that give you access to educational podcasts. I will give you a moment to write the addresses down and if anyone has any questions so far, I can take them before we move on to discuss infographics.
  8. What are Infographics? Well, you are looking at one right now. Infographics are a visual image such as a chart or diagraph used to represent information or data. You can use infographics in a couple of ways. There are many infographics that have already been made. You can find those and share with your students about various content related topics and to share facts for events or activities that are coming up in your school. There are many functions to Infographics. The best of infographics that they the user is able to condense a lot of information into one page or poster. Instead of having to write page after page of information, the user can take the most important facts, condense and share with students, or even other educators or parents. Just like with the podcasting, both teachers and students can work with infographics. Allowing students to experience with technology and infographics is a great 21st Century skill for them. Student experience with infographics will get them prepared for when they may have to use it in college and in the post college work in their careers. Another functionality of infographics is the ability to share information with many views. Infographics can be posted on a website that can be shared with people around the school, district, parents in the communities and even with classrooms and schools around the world. Because it is a digital file, it can be shared digitally, quickly and easily with the viewer. There are a few limitations when it comes to infographics. The first, there is some training on how to use the templates and work to design the infographics. It all depends on what infographic building site you use. Not all area user-friendly. I suggest trying out a few and see which one works best for you and your students. The second, not all sites are few, they have a cost to them. If you can not get the funding for those sites, I suggest you find one that is free and works well for what you are trying to do. It can be time consuming as well. To collect all your data and present it in a way that is appealing to the eye can take some time. Definitely plan out what you want to do to make sure you have enough time. It may not be something you can throw together the night before a presentation to your students or parents.

  10. These are just a few examples of infographics. As you can see, there is a huge emphasis on the graphics. The text supports the graphics in the chart or graph. The first one is from LRS.org and it shows the importance of libraries. The second infographic is from ebookfriendly and it also shows the importance of libraries. The last infographic was done by myself- it was my very first infographic. It gives a short, visual history of children’s literature. I think this would make a great poster for a elementary or middle school library.

  12. I have include 3 curriculum connection ideas. The first is for a 7th grade history classroom. When teaching World War II, teachers or librarians can have their students design an infographic showing their knowledge of the economic, social and political transformation of the U.S. and the world. Two other ideas; teachers can design an infographic to use as a review for students before the SOL or unit test, and finally, students can design an infographic to show their knowledge of the school year and teachers can grade as an end of year assessment.
  13. These are three infographic building websites I learned about 602. I would definitely recommend using Piktochart if you are just starting out. I found it to be very user friendly and there are lots of different options to get you going with designing your first Infographic.
  14. So next let’s talk about presentation tools. Presenting in education is something that you are going to see quite a lot of. Students will present to teachers, librarians and other students. Teachers and librarians will present to other teachers and librarians and of course to students, parents, administrations and the community. Of course are all familiar with PowerPoint, but there are many great sites out there that add even more dazzle to our presentations and can also be a lot of fun to use. There are a few functionalities to presentation tools. As I said before, everyone will have a time when they will have to present, so knowledge of these various presentation tools are vital. For teacher and library use, this can be incorporated into your daily lessons to your students, across all content classes. You can design presentations to talk about an initiative you would like to start with the community or with your students and present it to the parents or administrators. There are great presentation tools to use for opening house or for meet and greats with students’ parents. For students, they can be used as an assessment and for students to share what they know. These tools are so much fun; students won’t even think of it as work. Again, children and teens are part of the 21st century, and that includes a lot of technology. This is a perfect way to work with their skills and their knowledge. Because of the skills levels, be sure to choose the right presentation tools for your students. You know them best. And lastly, this is a new and fresh way of presenting. As educators, we want to always be on the edge of the latest technology and use that knowledge to share with our students. We are preparing them for college and the job world. We want to make sure they are keeping up with the students around the country and the world. The limitations are few, but notable. With some of the presentation tools, as with many others, there is a learning curve, for students and teachers. Again, tool around the various sites and find the ones that work best for your students needs. Economic Costs
  15. So there are plenty of resources when it comes to presentation tools. It all comes down to what you’re trying to do with your students. There are so many options that you definitely find what you are looking for, and sometimes that may change from project to project or activity to activity. The pull out a couple – slide share is a great way to share your PowerPoint presentations, as is Share A Like. Many users like Prezi because it is similar to PowerPoint, but it gives a lot of pizazz to the presentation and is great for incorporation video, audio and website link directly into the presentation.

Students can choose one of the presentation tools to design a presentation that shows their knowledge of the causes, major events and effects of the Civil War. Two other ideas – use one for the presentation tools at the beginning of the school year as an introduction to the library. This can be for both teachers and students. And finally use one of the presentation tools to design a presentation for Kindergarten orientation.
  17. The next tool I want to share with you is the use of websites. This is an extremely valuable tool especially for librarians. I did a search of libraries in my district and while each middle school had a library link on the school’s website, none of them had their own special website specifically for the school’s library. There are quite a few functions to share with you about websites. And the next slide I will share more details on what to include on your school’s website. To begin, there are numerous of free website builders that are very user friendly. They will provide you with the template and all you have to do is fill in your information about your library. Second, websites are a great way to share information with the users of the library – students, parents, teachers, other librarians, administration and even with the general public. There is so much information to include on a school library’s website, but at a basic level it is a place to share news, resources and upcoming events that relate to the library. So what are the limitations? The first, which is usually the case with technology is economic. Websites needs to be accessed outside of school in students’ home, and sometimes again students may not have access to the internet at home. It is good to be mindful of this, so do not just want the information available on the website, make sure all students have access to the information and content. The second is the skill level. We are not all going to be master website builders, but it is a learning curve. And the most important element is that the users are getting the information. You can keep it simple in the beginning; it doesn’t need to be fancy. With time you will grow. And this next slide, I will talk about some of the specifics to include on your site.
  18. What you will see to your right is a screen shot taking from a school library’s website from a school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I really liked this library’s site because it is clean, contains a lot of useful information and it is easy to navigate. I don’t know if you can quite see it, but at the top are various topics, for visitors to click on and take them to more information about the school and what it has to offer. Over to the left is what you can include on your website. At the very least, you definitely want to have an online catalogue of what books, ebooks and resources are in your school’s library. Most schools will have this information on the school’s website, but let’s take it a little further. Way to contact the librarian. Even more than just a simple email address – as you can see on this site, there is a link to twitter and Pinterest. This is the perfect way to show the school library’s presence around the web. Students respond very well to social media. This is a great way to connect. Share upcoming events – Use this space to let visitors know when the book fair is coming up, or special events that are unique to your school, a summer reading program perhaps. Feedback – this is a great way to get feedback from the students and the community. You can put polls and surveys on your site that can you a better idea about who your students are and what they are looking for in their library. Share a blog – A blog is again another great way to connect. It doesn’t need to be updated every day, but find a good time to update the school and the community with what is going on in the library or even to share useful tools, websites or presentations. Share student work – This is a great place to share what students are doing in the library and throughout the school. Resources, resources, resources – Just like the library itself, let the website be a place where students, teachers and parents look for their resources. Share author websites, recommended reading list, SOL objectives, videos, audio and anything you can think of that will be useful and relevant to your community Lastly make your site engaging and interesting. You want it to be a place your visitors will return to again and again.
  19. These are just a few website building sites that will help you get started on your school library website. Many school librarians like to use weebly. There are many options on all of these to make your website, unique and beautiful, representing your students and your school.
  20. My last curriculum connection I will share with you is for an 8th grade science/biology class. Students in biology classes will share with librarian a scientific investigation they conducted. Share the process and the results on the school library’s website. Second, the LMS can include links for SOL objectives for all grade levels and subjects and lastly include a summer recommended reading list and activities on the school’s library website.
