The document describes the Los Alamos GoMACCS Payload project which will conduct airborne measurements of black carbon aerosols over Houston and the Gulf of Mexico using a photo-acoustic instrument aboard an airplane. The project aims to quantify black carbon emissions and their optical properties, examine how combustion aerosols mix and age in the atmosphere, and investigate the impact of black carbon on clouds and atmospheric heating rates. Previous related experiments measuring black carbon in marine stratocumulus clouds are also briefly discussed.
