Presentation by Mark van Koningsveld (Van Oord) at the Data Science Symposium 2018, during Delft Software Days - Edition 2018. Thursday 15 November 2018, Delft.
8. In a nutshell:
• System design is a complex challenge that requires simulation to support
decision making (feedbacks make it impossible to rely on intuition /
experience to find optimum)
• Data solutions for the maritime sector need to combine water infrastructure
design (system or system element), including:
• (nautical) traffic processes
• logistical processes
• environmental conditions (natural, man made)
• Optimum is not just one rational business case (although it is generally very
important). Different stakeholders find different things important. Integral
approach is needed.
Let’s look at an example
9. Example of a logistical challenge
Reneging: The customer enters the line but decides to leave before being served.
Balking: The customer decides not to enter the waiting line.
Jockeying: The customer may move, to a shorter of faster moving queue.
Arrival rate: λ arrivals per hour
Services rate: μ services per hour
Nr of service stations

Transforming to a data driven sector requires much better collaboration
