6 CLASSIFICATION
OF DRUGS
GATEWAY
DRUGS
1
GATEWAY DRUGS
1
Gateway drugs are substances that,
when consumed, give way to harder,
more dangerous drugs.
DEPRESSANTS
2
Depressants are drugs that inhibit the
function of the central nervous system (CNS)
and are among the most widely used drugs
in the world. These drugs operate by
affecting neurons in the CNS
STIMULANTS
3
Stimulants are a class of drugs that speed up
the messages between the brain and the
body. They can make a person feel more
awake, alert, confident or energetic.
NARCOTICS
4
A substance used to treat moderate
to severe pain
HALLUCINOGENS
5
are a class of drugs that cause
hallucinations—profound distortions in a
person’s perceptions of reality
INHALANTS
6

found in the home or workplace—such as
spray paints, markers, glues, and cleaning
fluids. They contain dangerous substances
that have psychoactive (mind-altering)
