INTRODUCTION
Drug abuse is a significant public health concern that affects individuals,
families, and communities around the world. It can lead to a wide range
of negative consequences, including addiction, overdose, health
problems, and social issues such as crime and homelessness.
In this group project, we will be exploring the issue of drug abuse from
multiple perspectives and examining the various strategies that have
been implemented to address it. We will examine the epidemiology of
drug abuse, the various types of drugs that are commonly abused, and
the impact that drug abuse has on individuals and communities. By the
end of this project, we aim to have a deeper understanding of the issue
of drug abuse and the various strategies that can be used to address it.
ACTION PLAN
RESEARCH MATERIAL
1.What is Drug Abuse?
Drug abuse also known as
substance abuse is a term to
define Excessive use of
psychoactive drugs, such as
alcohol, pain medications or
illegal drugs. It can lead to
physical, social or emotional
harm.
2. Physical and Mental Dependence
Psychological dependency is defined as dependence on
a substance. While physical dependence is associated
with substance use disorders, this does not always
happen. Marijuana is often classified as a non-physically
addictive substance. Substance use experts classify it as
psychologically addictive
• Cravings
• Depressive issues.
• The restlessness that occurs when someone is not
using substances.
• Changes in appetite or taste.
• Sleep issues and irregular sleep patterns.
• Uncertainty about being able to stop the substance
of choice.
3. Causes of Drug Abuse
• Genetics: Studies have shown that people with a
family history of substance abuse are more likely to
develop drug addiction.
• Environmental factors: Exposure to abuse, poverty,
and other forms of trauma can increase the risk of
drug addiction.
• Mental health conditions: People with mental health
conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD are
at a higher risk of developing drug addiction.
• Easy access: Increased availability of drugs can lead
to increased drug abuse.
• Peers and societal pressure: Pressure from friends or
societal expectations can lead to individuals feeling
compelled to use drugs.
4. Route of Administrations
There are several routes of administration for drug abuse, including:
• Oral: Drugs can be taken orally, meaning they are swallowed and absorbed through
the digestive system. This is the most common route of administration for
prescription medications.
• Inhalation: Drugs can be inhaled through the nose or lungs, such as with cigarettes,
cigars, and vaporizers.
• Injection: Drugs can be injected into a vein, muscle, or under the skin. This route of
administration can be fast-acting and is often used for illicit drugs like heroin.
• Topical: Drugs can be applied to the skin or mucous membranes, such as in the form
of a cream or patch.
5. Sign & Symptoms of Drug Abuse
• There are many sign & symptoms for drug
abuse, including:
• Drowsiness(tired state where a person is
sleeping and being awake)
• Slurred Speech (Inability To Speak Louder)
• Lack Of Co-ordination
• Changes In Mood (Fluctuation of emotion)
• Memory Problems (Unusual Forgetfulness)
• Lack Of Inhibition (Less Self-Conscious &
more anxious
6. How Drug Addiction
Occur
• When repeated use of a drug changes the way
your brain feels pleasure. The addicting drug
causes physical changes to some nerve cells
(neurons) in your brain. Neurons use chemicals
called neurotransmitters to communicate.
These changes can remain long after you stop
using the drug.
• The most common roots of addiction are
chronic stress, a history of trauma, mental
illness and a family history of addiction.
Understanding how these can lead to chronic
substance abuse and addiction will help you
reduce your risk of becoming addicted.
7. Various types of Abused
Drugs & their side effect
1.Cocaine: A stimulant drug that increases
levels of neurotransmitters in the brain,
causing feelings of euphoria and increased
sociability.
-Side effects include increased heart rate and
blood pressure, insomnia, and anxiety.
Prolonged use can lead to heart attacks.
2.Heroin: An opioid drug that binds to
receptors in the brain and spinal cord, relieving
pain and causing feelings of euphoria.
-Side effects include drowsiness, slowed
breathing, and decreased mental alertness.
Long-term use can lead to addiction and death
from overdose.
3. Methamphetamine: A powerful stimulant that
increases levels of dopamine and norepinephrine
in the brain, causing increased energy, focus, and
euphoria.
- Side effects include decreased appetite,
hyperactivity, and irritability. Long-term use can
lead to brain damage, paranoia, and violent
behaviour.
4. Ecstasy: A psychoactive drug that affects levels of
serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, causing
feelings of euphoria, increased sociability, and
heightened sensory experiences.
-Side effects include dehydration, hyperthermia, and can
be neurotoxic to brain cells. Long-term use can cause
depression, anxiety, and memory problems.
8. Prevention & Control
of Drug Abuse
• Education and awareness campaigns about the
dangers of drug use.
• Access to treatment and support for individuals with
substance use disorders.
• Law enforcement to target the supply of drugs.
• Creating supportive environments with economic and
educational opportunities.
• Encourage open and honest communication with
loved ones who may be at risk of drug abuse.
• Addressing underlying mental health conditions that
may lead to self-medication.
• Monitoring and tracking trends in drug abuse to
inform prevention strategies.
9.Effect of Narcotics on Teenager
• Drug dependence. Teens who misuse drugs are
at increased risk of serious drug use later in life.
• Poor judgment. Teenage drug use is associated
with poor judgment in social and personal
interactions.
• Sexual activity. Drug use is associated with high-
risk sexual activity, unsafe sex and unplanned
pregnancy
• Mental health disorders. Drug use can
complicate or increase the risk of mental health
disorders, such as depression and anxiety.
• Changes in school performance. Substance use
can result in a decline in academic performance
10. Suppling Drugs In
India
Supplying drugs in India is regulated by the Drugs and
Cosmetics Act of 1940 and the rules established by the
Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO).
The drugs must be manufactured in accordance with
the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines. All
the drugs supplied must be accompanied by a valid
license and all the necessary documents like invoices,
test reports, and batch numbers. There are strict
penalties for those who supply drugs without a license
or supply drugs that have not been approved by the
CDSCO, including fines and imprisonment.
Additionally, the supply of certain drugs, such as opioids
and other controlled substances, is heavily regulated
and requires additional documentation and oversight. It
is illegal to supply drugs in India without proper
licensing and approval from the CDSCO.
11. Yearly
Estimated of
People
Affected by
Drugs
According to the World Health Organization, an
estimated 31 million people worldwide suffer from
drug use disorders. This includes individuals who use
drugs such as opioids, amphetamines, and cocaine.
Additionally, it is estimated that approximately 27
million people are affected by opioid use disorder,
with roughly 585,000 deaths per year attributed to
opioid use. These numbers are likely to be higher as
these estimates do not include the use of other drugs
such as marijuana, and also not all people who use
drugs necessarily have a disorder.
Substance abuse and addiction continue to be
significant public health challenges, and addressing
them requires a combination of prevention,
treatment, and harm reduction efforts.
ESSAY
Drug abuse is a serious problem that affects individuals, families,
and communities. It is defined as the use of drugs in a manner that
deviates from medical or social norms, and it can have harmful
physical and psychological effects on those who engage in it. There
are many different types of drugs that can be abused, including
alcohol, opioids, stimulants, and depressants. Each type of drug can
have its own unique set of negative effects, but some common
consequences of drug abuse include addiction, overdose, and
death.
Drug abuse also has a significant impact on society as a whole. It can
lead to increased crime and violence, decreased productivity and
economic growth, and strain on healthcare and social services.
There are many different factors that contribute to drug abuse,
including genetic predisposition, environment, and personal choice
Ultimately, addressing the problem of drug abuse requires a
comprehensive and holistic approach that involves collaboration
between individuals, families, communities, and government. By
working together, we can help to reduce the harm caused by drug
abuse and create a safer and healthier society for all.
In conclusion, drug abuse is a serious problem with far-reaching
consequences for individuals, families, and society. Education,
prevention, treatment, and addressing underlying issues are key
strategies in reducing the rates of drug abuse. A collaborative effort is
needed to address this problem, and it is important to understand the
different factors that contribute to drug abuse in order to effectively
address it.
