The transporter
 Driving skills
 Direction (reviewing map, use of
GPS, googlemaps)
 Traffic rules/safe driving
 Trouble shooting and repairs
 Total preventive maintenance
A driver must by default know the minimum
driving skills:
1. Starting/stopping smoothly
2. Shifting gears
3. Focus on the road and obstacles
4. Turning, backing, parking
5. Finding and operating the controls
equipment of the vehicle
6. Maintaining creature comfort in the vehicle
7. How to get around – knowing directions
 North south, east west orientation
 How to read maps/use GPS google maps
 Asking direction when everything fails
 Doing travel plans and preparation (including
dry run if needed by walking or by bike)
 Knowledge of LTO and MMDA rules
 Right of way rules
 International traffic signs (three types of
traffic signs)
 Dealing with: fellow
drivers, pedestrians, motorbikes, large
trucks, drunk drivers
 Towing
 Off road
 Driving tractors and other vehicles/heavy
equipment
 Handling emergencies and accidents
 Maintaining constant and safe speed
 Maintaining proper distance with vehicles
ahead beside
 Rest and food stop
Avoiding liquors and wine while driving
Observance of traffic rules and regulations
 Meaning of solid lines
 Meaning of shapes of traffic signs
 Behavior at intersections
 Parking at the thoroughfare, busy road
 Being seen/use of lights EWD traffic vests
 Handling flats
 The car will not start
 The gears will not shift
 The lights will not turn on
 The wiper will not work
 The horn is stuck
 The steering wheel will not turn
 There are unusual sounds
 WHAT DOYOU DO?
 The goal is to keep the vehicle in showroom
condition
 The vehicle can be made to run forever
 The basis is the 5s: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu,
shitsuke
 Preventive maintenance card – to destroy the
car before it gets bogged down; periodic
cleaning, lubrication – oiling and greasing,
adjusting
 Maintenance card
 Repair it before damage gets bigger
Clean and Check - CC
Clean, Check and Adjust - CCA
Clean, Check and Replace - CCR
Daily cleaning inside and out
 Clean daily; dirt on the vehicle leaves film on the
paint and eventually destroys shine
 Park the vehicle in cool place always but not beneath
trees where tree sap and bird poo will deface the
vehicle
 Clean vehicle after vehicle has cooled down
 Use generous amount of water and three sets of rags:
dirty rag, clean rag, and chamois
 Clean underbody of vehicle; remove mud as it retains
moisture that cause rust
 Wax and shampoo the car
 Dust the carpets daily; dirty carpet can ruin the
evaporator of the aircon
 Dust the seats
 Wipe the dashboard, steering wheel , shift knob
with clean rag.; use armor all if necessary
 Shampoo the upholstery and the seats
periodically
 Purchase air freshener for plaisir
 Clean the glass parts with approved glass
cleaner;
 Use armour all to freshen and give shine to
PVC parts like dashboards and other rubber
parts
 Purchase air freshner for plaisir
 Tires are good for 40,000 km or 5 years;
shorter use means the vehicle is subject to
harsh and improper use;
 Buy high quality tires: Yokie, Michelin, MSF,
or Maxis
 Check tires daily for stones, nails and other
destructive items
 Do an engine wash at least once a month;
 Do this when engine is cool, and not after a hard drive;
cover the electrical parts with plastic - the altenator
and starter, fuse, relays
 Use a commercial degreaser or do it yourself:
kerosene mixed with joy and water; spray or paint
brush your degreaser; let it stand for 10 minutes
Then wash with clear water. Be careful not to let water
enter the carb, air intake and the electrical; let dry
and wipe with dry cloth
 Change oil every 5,000 km, 6 mos or whichever comes
first.
 Remove negative terminal of the battery;
 Remove the oil plug and drain the oil overnight on a
pan, save the used oil for formworks
 To flush the engine, use one liter of #40 oil, and or
until clear oil comes out;
 Replace oil filter with a new one, coat the rubber parts
with oil, replace the oil plug
 Put fresh oil: 4 liters for most cars, and 8 liters for
patrol. Run the engine for 3 minutes, check the level
 The vehicle gets bogged down by non metal
parts - fan belts, rubber bushings, filters.
 Check and replace as prescribed by manual or
as you see it;
 They are usually consumables and have finite
life span: fan belts and timing belts – two
years; fuel filter - one year, air cleaner – 6
mos.
 We have vehicles that are in operation for
over l5 years (and they are second hand)
 We have vehicles that left Manila in
showroom condition, they all look like junk
now
 When I was younger, I could clean 4 vehicles
in a day; can you?
