This lesson plan aims to teach 22 fifth grade students about symmetry through various art activities. The plan includes routines, revising vocabulary from "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" story, creating symmetrical paintings by folding paper and drawing on one side, and evaluating the activity. Students will then use an online tool to draw symmetrical images on computers. The objectives are for students to learn the concept of symmetry, practice requesting art supplies, and create symmetrical drawings independently.
1. LESSON PLAN
Title of the Lesson: Drawing a symmetrical painting Date: 14th
January 2019
Unit of Study: The very hungry caterpillar
Level and group: P5 Number of children: 22
Background Information:
This group has 22 students. They have started learning English since they were three years old, so they
are getting used to listen to the foreign language once a week. We have been working with the very
hungry caterpillar during the first term, so we are going to take advantage of the vocabulary learned
in order to introduce the symmetry concept.
Learning objectives:
- Recognise what symmetry is and remember the name of the concept
- Ask for a paint colour.
- Use the game correctly
Competencies involved:
- Linguistic competence
- Artistic competence
- Digital competence
- Mathematical competence
Assessment:
- Recognise which a symmetric object is
- Ask for the teacher to get paint
- Use the game properly without any
help.
- Remembering the word “Symmetry”

1.- Routines 5’ Before starting the class normally

2.- Let’s revise 10’ I will show some plastic fruits from
the Very hungry caterpillar story
and others in order to revise
both the vocabulary from the
story and also if the objects are
symmetric or not.

2. 3.- Our own
painting
30’ Once we know exactly what
symmetry means we are going
to create our own symmetrical
painting. First the students will
ask for some paint using the
magic words: “Yellow paint,
please.” or “Black paint, please”
and I will give some to each
student with a paper. We will
fold the paper once and we will
draw using just one of the sides
of the paper.
They are going to draw
whatever they want to but they
can just draw dots and circles.
When they have finished, they
will fold again so that they will
get a symmetrical drawing.

4.- Did you
enjoy the
activity?
5’ After doing the activity I will give
a card to each student. In one
side they have a “Thumb
up”drawing in a green
background while in the other
side they have a “Thumb down”
drawing in a red background. I
will ask if they have enjoyed the
previous activity so that they will
evaluate the activity
themselves.
