An equals sign (=) means that the two sides have the same value 2x – 5  6x + 7 =
Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other If you only do something to one side, then the equation becomes unbalanced, like the picture above

Now we can take the – 5 across to the 7.  Remember that crossing the equals  sign  changes the  sign   –  4x– 5  7  = + 5
Now, the variable has to be completely by itself. Divide by – 4.  –  4x   – 4  12  – 4  =
