Big Idea
My goal is that they may be encouraged
in heart and united in love, so that they
may have the full riches of complete
understanding, in order that they may
know the mystery of God, namely, Christ

engaged in evil deeds,
Colossians 1:21
What we were
Alienated-shut out from fellowship and intimacy.
Hostile in mind-an enemy
Evil deeds are the natural progression
Saved
yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body
through death, in order to present you before
Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—

To make you acceptable to Him
Perseverance
if indeed you continue in the faith firmly
established and steadfast, and not moved away
from the hope of the gospel that you have heard,
which was proclaimed in all creation under
heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.
Colossians 1:23
We must do our part
Remain in
the hope of
the Gospel
I Paul was made a servant
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and
in my flesh I do my share on behalf of His body,
which is the church, in filling up what is lacking in
Christ’s afflictions.
Colossians 1:24
Woohoo suffering!
 His imprisonment benefited the church
 An offering to God for the church
 Suffering is need for maturity
Paul ties them to the church universal
Of this church I was made a minister according to
the stewardship from God bestowed on me for
your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the
preaching of the word of God, that is, the mystery
which has been hidden from the past ages and
generations, but has now been manifested to His
saints,
Colossians 1:25–26
Notice the inclusion in the past couple verses
Suffering is for your sake
Servant of God for your sake
My preaching for your benefit
You (the saints) have the mystery revealed to you
Paul’s ministry because of his authority
We proclaim Him, admonishing every man
and teaching every man with all wisdom, so
that we may present every man complete in
Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving
according to His power, which mightily works
within me.
Colossians 1:28–29

Present complete in Christ
Paul is drawing them into his struggles
For I want you to know how great a struggle I
have on your behalf and for those who are at
Laodicea, and for all those who have not
personally seen my face,
Is Paul being egotistical?
1 Corinthians 12:26 And if one member suffers, all
the members suffer with it; if one member is
honored, all the members rejoice with it.
The Big Idea
that their hearts may be encouraged, having been
knit together in love, and attaining to all the
wealth that comes from the full assurance of
understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of
God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself,
Encouragement
Unity through love

Reason for the connection
I say this so that no one will delude you with
persuasive argument. For even though I am
absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in
spirit, rejoicing to see your good discipline and
the stability of your faith in Christ.
