The document describes the incarnation of Jesus Christ through the story of Joseph and Mary in the Gospel of Matthew. It then summarizes the key points about Joseph as a just man who obeyed God, and Mary as the chosen mother who said yes to God's call. Finally, it analyzes the passage in Colossians 1:15-20 which describes Jesus as the image of God, the creator and sustainer of all things, the head of the Church, and the fullness of God dwelling in him to reconcile all things.
This is a study of texts that show the Father putting Jesus in full charge. Everything was put in His hands, and he had the power and authority over all.

John 1:29-34 (ESV)
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Grandma Donnie and her ability to know the relationship of everyone in the rural mountain community of SW Virginia.
We will begin in Matthew chapter 1 covering verses 18-25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the
Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of
the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son,
and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and
bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,
but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
Matthew’s part of the Christmas narrative is about relationship. The royal line, the Messiah, genealogies establishing Jesus of Nazareth as the JEWISH Messiah the son of God.
Jesus’ relationship to Israel
Joseph
A just man- being accordance with a high standard
Right family- of the line of David (Messianic) Joseph son of David
Contemplative- not hasty, thought about what to do about Mary
Receptive- heard and obeyed a dream from the God
Namer- Gave him the prescribed name and gave him his name
We could classify Joseph as Jesus’ step father
Mary
Willing- accepted the angel’s word
Brave- unmarried pregnant girl, how did she tell her family
Involved- from the wedding at Cana to the grave
Faithful- Followed her son into the church era
Mary is the mother of our LORD. Mary’s firstborn. God’s only Begotten
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Ahaz- king of Israel besieged by a foreign army. Shut up in Jerusalem. God promised them deliverance. God even told him to ask for a sign. Ahaz refused and God gave him this promise.
God with us
To deliver, work signs, defeat enemies.
Immanuel- God with us
What does that mean practically?
What is your relation to the God-Man Jesus Christ?
Who is Jesus to you?
Get ready for a new way to read our text. You will say aloud the underlined, All capped and Algerian fonted words when I point to you.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created,
in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities
all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,
that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Hallelujah!
Early creed or song or poem
What we need to know above all, if we are to grow as Christians, increasing in wisdom, power, patience and thanksgiving, is the centrality and supremacy of Jesus Christ. The more you get to know, and know about, Jesus Christ, the more you will understand who the true God is and what he’s done; who you are as a result; and what it means to live in and for him.
Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
Let us make man in our image and likeness- Genesis our purpose in being. To image God on the earth
God’s family on the earth- The holy family in heaven, Abraham promised a world-wide family on the earth. By faith
The image of the Divine-
1 Corinthians 15:49 (ESV)
49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV)
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Reproduction and manifestation of God on the earth. That is the reason for the incarnation of the son on the earth
Images the invisible- God is that invisible spirit, Jesus brings and image of God the Father to the earth
Firstborn as in rank of all creation. Not firstborn as one created. He is the firstborn in rank authority position. We are the church of the firstborn.
He is the model we are the imitators. He is the Son of God we are becoming like him. Being conformed to his IMAGE
Colossians 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Uncreated- God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Created- all things in heaven and on earth
Visible- you and I , earth, rocks, animals
Invisible- Man’s authority (thrones) spirit world
Through Him and for him- Natural and spirit
You were created for Him. Not the other way around
Colossians 1:17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
He himself is before all things- a term denoting time
Before any created thing
I AM
Preexistent deity
Hebrews 1:3a He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
The creator is the sustainer
Acts 17:28 In him we live and move and have our being…For we are indeed his offspring.
We are because HE is!
Immanuel God with us
Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
Head of his body- which is the Church
The beginning- the originator of the Church. The source of the church
The firstborn of dead- The Hope of His Church
Preeminent- within the church in everything the first position the highest rank
Ephesians 1:22–23 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
We submit to Him as our authority
Servant to Lord
Colossians 1:19-20 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
This starts with “for” (hoti). It states God’s will for the Messiah which is (1) the fullness of deity to be revealed in Him (cf. v. 19) and (2) the reconciliation of all things through Him
Colossians 2:9–10… For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.
Col. 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God… the exact copy
Col. 1:19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell… complete total quantity fullness
Colossians 2:9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily… the totality of kinds or sorts + above
All in between must be interpreted in light of the bookending verses. Mentioned a third time for emphasis
HE IS GOD
Jesus is God by the will of the Father
Reconciliation is possible because of that!
Reconciliation means to change from hostility to peace
Restored fellowship with God made possible by Immanuel
Beneficiaries of that restorative work
Relationship is paramount!
Who we are is defined by relationship.
We are in a family relationship
Our Lord and Savior is also our God
