1. Earthly birth must be followed by a spiritual birth
2. The Spirit has been promised to Israel
3. The Spirit is the sign of the new covenant

7. Clandestine Meeting
John 3:1–2 Now there was a man of the
Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,
“Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come
from God, for no one can do these signs that you
do unless God is with him.”
John 3:1-2 7
8. Amen, Amen
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless
one is born again he cannot see
the kingdom of God.
John 3:3 8
10. Nicodemus said to him,
How can a man be born when he is old? Can he
enter a second time into his mother’s womb and
be born?”

11. Jesus answered
I say to you, unless one is born of water
and the Spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God. That which is born of the

you, ‘You must be born again.’
John 3:5–7 12
13. A reference
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be
clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all
your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a
new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
And I will remove the heart of stone from your
flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put
my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my
statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
Ezekiel 36:25–27 13
14. Water & Spirit
Water- Israel through the Red Sea
Water- Baptism of repentance
Spirit- Belief Jesus is the Messiah
14
16. Don’t Marvel
The Law bought you this far
The Spirit takes you the rest of the way

17. Spirit & Wind
The wind blows where it wishes, and you
hear its sound, but you do not know where
it comes from or where it goes. So it is
with everyone who is born of the Spirit.
John 3:8 17
18. Valley of Dry Bones Ezekiel 37
There is a play on the Hebrew word (ruach) and the Greek
word (pneuma) which means both “wind” and “spirit.” The
point is that the wind has freedom, as does the Spirit. One
cannot see the wind, but rather its effects; so, too the
Spirit. Man’s salvation is not in his control, but is in the
Spirit’s control. Salvation is a combination of the initiation
of the Spirit and the faith/repentance response of man.
John’s Gospel uniquely focuses on the person and work of
the Spirit He sees the new age of righteousness as the age
of the Spirit of God.

20. Pitfalls of the Gospel

believe if I tell you heavenly things?
John 3:11–12 21
22. The Father and Son
Receiving them is a choice
Negative (John 1:11; 3:32)
Positive (John 1:12; 3:33)
22
23. Declaration of Divinity
No one has ascended into heaven
except he who descended from
heaven, the Son of Man.
John 3:13 23
25. The Cure for the snake bite
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in
the wilderness, so must the Son of
Man be lifted up, that whoever
believes in him may have eternal life.
John 3:14–15 25
26. Foretells his death
Numbers 21 People sinned snakes sent as
judgement, God instruct Moses to construct a
bronze snake and put it on a pole.
People sin, the snake is loose, Jesus’ death on a
cross would cure the death of sin. Look to Jesus.
Choose life
26
27. God’s Agent Jesus
For God so loved the world, that
he gave his only Son, that whoever
believes in him should not perish
but have eternal life.
John 3:16–17 27
28. God’s Agent Jesus
For God did not send his Son into
the world to condemn the world,
but in order that the world might
be saved through him.
John 3:16–17 28

31. Believing or not believing
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but
whoever does not believe is condemned
already, because he has not believed in the
name of the only Son of God.
John 3:18 31
32. Ezekiel 18:23 Have I any pleasure in the
death of the wicked, declares the Lord GOD,
and not rather that he should turn from his
way and live?

33. The sinful condition
And this is the judgment: the light has
come into the world, and people loved
the darkness rather than the light
because their works were evil.
John 3:19–20 33
34. The sinful condition
For everyone who does wicked things
hates the light and does not come to
the light, lest his works should be
exposed.
John 3:19–20 34
36. Comparison
But whoever does what is true
comes to the light, so that it may
be clearly seen that his works have
been carried out in God.
John 3:21 36

Spiritually apprised
Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our

Snake analogy. Not looking to the bronze serpent. Poison is already in and will lead to death.
J316 is not an invitation to a party. There are consequences for unbelief
