The Domesday Book was a survey of land ownership completed in 1086 on the orders of William the Conqueror to assess taxes from the people of England. It contained detailed records of land ownership and resources for over 13,000 settlements. As the first public record of its kind, anything written in the Domesday Book was undisputed law, allowing William to consolidate his control over post-invasion England.
