Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are a system for identifying and linking to intellectual property in the digital environment. DOIs provide persistent identification of digital objects by assigning a unique number to each object that remains the same even if its online location changes. DOIs can identify various types of digital and non-digital content like journal articles, books, images, and more. The International DOI Foundation oversees the DOI system and registration agencies that allocate DOI prefixes and register DOIs.
