This document provides guidance on establishing an effective document control system. It outlines four key steps: 1) Ensuring documentation is clear, concise and user-friendly, 2) Having the right amount of documentation, 3) Outlining the document control system and what will be controlled, and 4) Determining where documents will be stored and maintained. Examples of simple hardcopy and online systems are described to illustrate different options for organizations. Common problems seen with document control systems are also listed.
