Â
Introduction
Virgin Media was created from the merger of NTL, Telewest and
Richard Branson's Virgin Mobile and is a part of Liberty Global plc,
the worldâs largest international cable company. In the UK, Virgin
Media is the first âquad playâ provider, meaning that they provide
broadband, TV, mobile phone and home phone services. The
company has invested over £13 billion and owns the UKâs largest
fibre optic network, making it the biggest privately built network. In
the first quarter of 2013 Virgin Media had 4.49 million broadband
subscribers.
As a forward thinking company Virgin Media is at the forefront of
digital technology, with its engineers researching the technologies
that could be possible 20 years into the future. As well as
investing in new technology Virgin Media continually invests in the
people who work for the company, maintaining Richard Bransonâs
philosophy that engaged and motivated employees lead to happy
customers, which in turn leads to shareholder gain.
âGreat people, connected to delighted customers,
connected to great business results.â
The company believes that its employees need to both understand
and believe in the journey of the business and the personal role they
can each play in its success. This applies to all employees. There
are a range of careers at Virgin Media from apprenticeships out in
the field in areas such as installation and service to a variety of
graduate opportunities. Virgin Mediaâs apprenticeship programmes,
which consist of light work using screwdrivers rather than heavy
duty maintenance work, are attracting a growing number of females
into its technician roles year on year. As well as work experience
and traineeships there are a wide range of career opportunities in
the three main business areas:
⢠Serve which includes roles in customer support and service
technicians.
⢠Growth which includes sales and retail.
⢠Support which includes roles in finance and health and safety.
Balancing business needs with the needs of its employees is
achieved through the companyâs commitment to creating a fun
environment for its employees whilst they develop their careers.
âBeing Virgin Media means we don't just want to be proud
of what we do, we also want to love how we do it.â
The companyâs values - Insatiable Curiosity, Heartfelt Service,
Delightfully Surprising, Red Hot, Smart Disruption and Straight Up -
championed by the companyâs Chief Values Officer, Red, act as a
âred threadâ, underpinning the companyâs story and guiding
decision making. This case study shows how Virgin Media
understands the impact motivated and engaged employees have
on its businessâ performance.

1. Do you have a fully engaged team?
The most important element of a successful and growing business is its team of employees.
WMC PR Agents in Melbourne play an important role in having a fully engaged team.
Motivated employees that share the organizationâs vision are the backbone of any business and
without them the organization would not function.
While they wouldnât normally be thought of as such, employees are a part of an organizationâs
public and are equally as significant as customers, suppliers, investors, government, neighbors
and the community.
WMC Public Relations Melbourne has a distinct role in employee communication and there is
also some coming together of HR and PR functions on specific issues, such as industrial
relations.
One of the key reasons for using PR in employee communication is to foster good
management/employee relations. Knowing that one-way communication is of little or no value
at all (i.e. management to employees) it is important to have mechanisms in place that allows
the free and flowing transfer of information between all parties, particularly from the bottom
up.
Recruitment, training and development of an employee takes a large amount of time, money
and effort so it pays to keep employees up to date on whatâs happening in matters that affect
them. After all it is cheaper to keep employees than recruit new people.
A staff newsletter is an effective way of keeping employees informed about things that have an
impact on them. Timely company news can negate any damaging speculation that may arise.
Social news, employee awards or profiles, company awards, new markets or large sales gained
can all be included to keep the newsletter entertaining and informative.
Other examples of how our PR CompanyinMelbourne can foster constructive employee relations
are by conducting attitude surveys, running and attending team-building events, maintaining
intranets, running employee competitions, producing videos (by the CEO giving a company
update, for example), implementing staff recognition and reward programs, and using the web
and social media to establish and maintain a sharing of information and two-way dialogue.
Generating trust and helping employees reach their full potential is a key responsibility that
needs to be managed effectively.
Employee communication is just one of the many roles undertaken by the PR professional.
Check the WMC Public Relations website at http://www.wmcpr.com.au/ for the other functions
WMC PR can provide.
