This document provides guidelines for managing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in the emergency and critical care unit of Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Ethiopia. It defines DKA and its clinical presentation. The diagnostic criteria and classification of DKA severity are outlined. The guidelines recommend initial resuscitation measures, expanding intravascular volume with saline, potassium replacement, insulin therapy, treating complications, addressing precipitating factors, and close monitoring of the patient. Insulin therapy should begin after 1 hour of fluid resuscitation to steadily decrease acidosis and avoid complications. The guidelines provide details on calculating fluid requirements, administering insulin via continuous IV or intermittent SC dosing, and monitoring patients until resolution of DKA.
