- Distracted driving affects everyone. The longer we drive, the less aware we can become of the common ways we get distracted. Distractions can eventually become behaviors if left unchecked. Many of us probably believe we can drive safely while distracted. The goal of this session is to create a renewed awareness of distracted driving and the behaviors that often accompany it. Transition Here is an overview of what we will learn in this short presentation.
- Distracted driving affects everyone. The longer we drive, the less aware we can become of the common ways we get distracted. Distractions can eventually become behaviors if left unchecked. Many of us probably believe we can drive safely while distracted. The goal of this session is to create a renewed awareness of distracted driving and the behaviors that often accompany it.
- Transition Distracted driving can be grouped into three major groups.
- Note that each group has multiple distractions.…. (Review from slide) Visual distraction is when the driver takes his eyes off the road and does not observe what is immediately in front of him. Manual distraction involves taking one's hands off the wheel to reach for something… (Radio dial, air conditioner knob, paper on the floor, a child, etc.) Cognitive or deep-thinking distraction occurs when an individual's focus is not directly on the act of driving and his/her mind wanders to another issue. Presenter: Stop and ask the group to discuss common causes of these types of distractions. Audience participation is important. Transition There are many distractions. BEFORE SHOWING THE NEXT SLIDE, ask the audience what distracts them. Then ask them what they would consider the top three distractions to be.
- -REACHING OR LEANING -FIDDLING WITH RADIO -CONVERSING -EATING-DRINKING What is interesting about this study is that the top 4 behaviors are things we do all the time, and we may not recognize them as distractions. Clearly, distracted driving is far more than texting and cell phone use.
- Transition All of these distractions are inside of the car. But let’s not forget about distractions outside of the car. They account for 30 percent of distractions. What are some examples?
- More than just texting & driving EVERYONE gets distracted 80% of all accidents are caused by distracted driving Video that shows how commonplace distracted driving is … we all get distracted while driving and why it is important to recognize our behaviors.
- Distraction components that have compounded with time Transition The point to be made: We have increased the number and complexity of distractors while attempting to adapt to the task of driving a more complex vehicle.
- The Pony Express Rider rode across the open plains at 1-horse power. He stopped from time to time to rest himself and the horse. Transition This changed as time moved on… distractions crept in.
- Here we have the Pony Express rider with a couple of “distractions.” Not only does he now have to focus on the ground he is galloping across, but he has external distractions like arrows and bullets. The speed is still 1-horse power, but he has to negotiate many more things. The simple task of delivering the mail becomes much more difficult.
- An early “horseless carriage” traveled about 10 mph. The driver had no distractions. Also, very few other automobiles were on the road. Then, in the roaring ‘30s, there were more cars, and they moved a little faster. Still, there were no distractions such as radios, phones, etc. A few more responsibilities… AND, a little more skill is involved in operating the equipment. The task of driving requires minimal engagement with surroundings. Distractions can be recovered from easily. There are no arrows or bullets… no real road and traffic.
- Continue to progress in the scenarios with faster cars, while adding to the number of cars on the road, as well as the complexity of distractors: cell phones, DVD players, weather conditions, satellite radios. Increased speed requires an increased skill set to operate the vehicle. If there is a distraction, because of the increased speed, the potential to have an accident or negative consequence increases dramatically. When on a horse in the open, you have more time to react. In a vehicle, depending on the rate of speed, you have less time to react before you have an incident, (injuring yourself, passengers, pedestrians and property). Transition With time, consequences of distraction increase significantly for drivers, passengers, pedestrians and property. Sometimes, the consequences can be fatal.
- In a nutshell, we are living…and driving…in a more complicated world. Transition Here’s a real-life example of what can happen if we let distractions affect our driving.
- Near Carlsbad, New Mexico, three oilfield workers died after rear-ending a school bus. This scene occurs way too often. The highway speeds have increased. The volume of exposure has increased. And the distractors have multiplied. People go to work thinking that they will be returning home. Sadly, that is too often not the case. Unsafe behaviors such as distracted driving account for the majority of these incidents. As a society, we need to reframe “distracted” driving as unacceptable. In the workplace, we tell employees if they are angry, complacent or tired, they should take some time and decompress, focus or get rest before coming on the job site. We don’t hold ourselves accountable in the same way when operating a vehicle. We must challenge the belief that, “It is everyone else’s issue, not mine.” The way to begin to make that change is to hold ourselves accountable for not driving while distracted. Transition When we talk about distracted driving, one of the first things that comes to mind is cell phones. Specifically, texting while driving.
- Drivers who text take their eyes off the road an average of 4.6 seconds, according to the National Safety Council. High rate of speed means that you cannot react in time to avoid an incident. The presenter should pause and get the audience to stop and think not just about texting, but about any distractions. The important issue is the distance traveled without seeing in front of you. This is what must be emphasized, not the texting.
- Since we are all prone to being distracted, here are some simple things to keep in mind that we can do to arrive at our destination safely. Transition Let’s drill down into each of these strategies and get to some examples.
- Ask the audience when was the last time that they thought of mirror adjustment? Transition Thinking safety first means focusing on your most important task: driving.
- Practice safe following distance rules – Keep at least three seconds between you and the bumper in front of you. Increase your following distance in hazardous conditions such as slick roads or poor visibility. The heavier the vehicle, the more you should increase your following distance. Keep eyes moving: Pay attention to everything around your vehicle Avoid deep thought - Keep thoughts and conversations simple. Choose relaxing music – Choose relaxing music over talk radio, because you are less prone to be thinking. Transition It’s clear that good behaviors can go a long way toward keeping you safe behind the wheel. Similarly, bad behaviors can increase your risk of getting in an accident.
- Focus on the road– Pay attention to conditions around you, including road conditions and traffic. Don’t multitask – Avoid distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, eating and grooming. Don’t get aggressive – Be courteous to other drivers, and stay calm. Avoid unnecessary risks – Don’t speed, drive through potentially flooded areas or practice other risky behavior.
- Texting is not the only distraction – Distractions include eating, adjusting the radio, grooming and anything else that takes your attention from driving. Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents, and the consequences are too often fatal. Driving is a privilege – Not a right.
