This document summarizes app store market data from Distimo. It finds that the Google Android Market has surpassed the Apple App Store for iPhone in free apps. By May 2011, Android Market is projected to be the largest store overall. It also notes that Apple iPad's App Store grew 12% in March to over 75,000 apps, and that competitors like BlackBerry and Google will enter the tablet market in 2011. The top publishers on iPad already publish across platforms.

by consumers. However, the mobile market has long been characterized by fragmentation, which is
also displayed in the wide range of mobile application stores that were launched from 2009 on.

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY
This publication covers the Apple App Store for iPad, Apple App Store for iPhone, Apple
Mac App Store, BlackBerry App World (worldwide store), GetJar, Google Android Market,
Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog, and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace in the United
States.
The major findings are:
• The Google Android Market eclipsed the Apple App Store for iPhone in terms of
free applications and now has 134,342 free applications, while the Apple App Store
iPhone has 121,845 free applications.
• If all application stores maintain their current growth pace, approximately five months
from now Google Android Market will be the largest store in terms of number of
applications followed by the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad, Windows Phone
7 Marketplace, BlackBerry App World and Nokia Ovi Store. The Windows Phone 7
Marketplace will also be larger than the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World
prior to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace being available for even a full year.
• One year after launching the iPad, Apple will be confronted with its first serious
competition as both BlackBerry and Google enter the emerging tablet market. Apple
has already seized momentum and grown the App Store for iPad in the first year to
75,755 applications developed by 21,975 publishers. Daily downloads in the Top
100 Overall paid and free applications for iPad combined exceed 500,000, while
the daily revenue in the Top 100 paid is approximately $400,000 excluding in-app
purchases.
• Many of the top publishers on the iPad already publish cross-platform. Fifty-eight
percent of the 50 most popular publishers have already developed applications for
non-Apple platforms.

Only moderate growth was observed in most of the application stores over the course of
the past several months, however overall growth picked up again in March . The Apple
App Store for iPhone is the largest store in terms of all applications available however, it
was among the slowest growing stores in terms of relative growth in March. Regardless
of its low relative growth, the Apple App Store for iPhone was still second only to Google
in terms of absolute growth figures.
The Google Android Market is the clear leader in terms of free applications as of March
2011. The total number of free applications exceeds that of the Apple App Store for
iPhone by more than 10,000, while the number of paid applications available in Google
Android Market is barely one-third of the total number of paid applications available in
the Apple App Store for iPhone.
The Apple App Store for iPad grew by 12% in March to 75,755 applications, of which
34,120 are designated for iPad only. The total number of iOS applications now equals
367,334.

The previous page depicts the current store sizes and growth rates and reveals that some
stores experienced higher growth than others. The absolute growth is not necessarily
high even though the relative growth can be high. The growth pace of the last three
months is used to forecast the absolute sizes of six stores in the coming three months
in order to provide more insight into the development of the whole ecosystem.
First, the Google Android Market is predicted to have only 40,000 applications less than
the Apple App Store for iPhone by the end of June 2011, and will close the remaining
gap before the end of July 2011. Second, we predict that the BlackBerry App World will
double in size over a six-month period and will most likely be larger than Nokia Ovi
Store by the end of May 2011.
The last finding is not shown in the graph, although the trend can still be observed. At
its current growth rate, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace will be larger than the Nokia
Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World before the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has even
been available for a full year.
It should be noted that all figures are based purely on the average month-over-month
growth figures that could easily accelerate or slow down. Still, it depicts a good overview
of what we believe may happen.

The development of the Apple App Store for iPad since its launch on April 3, 2010 is
depicted in the above figure. It will be interesting to see if, with regard to applications,
the newly released BlackBerry QNX and Google Android Honeycomb will develop in a
similar manner.
It is interesting to note that applications on the iPad have become more expensive over
time, while we note a trend in the opposite direction for other application stores. The
proportion of applications featuring in-app purchases decreased over time as well. This
is likely because the games category (which has generally had a high in-app purchase
adoption rate) has lost some of its prominence to other categories.
Many of the most popular applications released at launch have remained popular over
the entire year and are still among the top 25 most popular applications as of March
2011. These include Pages, iBooks and Penultimate.

The table above shows the most popular Apple App Store for iPad publishers in March
2011 that also publish outside the Apple ecosystem on other platforms. These publishers
are likely to publish on the new tablet platforms as they are already experienced in
multi-platform development.
Chillingo, Electronic Arts and Gameloft already have applications available for the iPad,
Android and BlackBerry, and may be able to port the existing applications to the new
platforms. For others like, Rovio Mobile Ltd., who have avoided the BlackBerry platform
thus far, the new tablet may provide a trigger for them to start developing applications
for the BlackBerry or Android platforms.
Many of the top publishers on the iPad already publish on non-Apple platforms. Fifty-
eight percent of the 50 most popular iPad publishers developed applications for one
or more other platforms as of March 2011. Ninety-four percent of the 50 most popular
iPad publishers are considered to be cross-store publishers when the Apple App Store
for iPhone and Apple Mac App Store are seen as independent stores.
