Insidious Flowers Attract the Greatest Beauty
John Steinbeck s East of Eden tells the story of the lives of many people, each chapter focusing on
a different person or group. The proponents of the novel trail along the characters and displays a
contrast between them. The characters struggle between evil and good not only with themselves,
but with each other. In his story, East of Eden, Steinbeck places Cathy s demonic and deceiving
personality together with Adam s pure hearted temperament to demonstrate contradictions in nature.
Steinbeck uses the calm, fresh setting of Salinas Valleyto create a distinctive atmosphere. The novel
follows the characters and their families in North America. The beginning of the novel consists of
an atmosphere in which both Adam Trask and Cathy Ames live in. They both live on the east
coast and explore its tenebrous tangibility. Adam lives a life of fear and pain in the east: first in the
gruesome and bloody war, and then with his brother Charles. While this is detrimental to Adam, the
gloominess and susceptibility of the east coast is perfect for Cathy. She learns that there she can
use ... manipulation [to] gain and keep power over anyone, (Steinbeck, 75). Eventually, Adam and
Cathy meet and Adam falls in love with her. Once Adam tells Cathy that he will take her to
California, she is wary and hesitant. Cathy makes it known to Adam that she, ... didn t want to [go
there], and that she will not stay in California (Steinbeck, 173). She quietly threatens him that, As

I Was Born For The Woods
I was born in the woods. Technically speaking, I was born at West Side Hospital in Nashville,
Tennessee, but brought home and raised in the woods. Five years before I arrived, my parents
purchased nine acres of land in Tennessee and built a house that backed into four hundred acres
of land. It was heavily covered in trees and brush a place where all of God s handiwork was still in
its original state. They cleared away just enough land for a house and a small yard; the rest
belonged to the wild.
From the time I could walk, the outdoors called to me. When the sun was up, I was outside
exploring, chasing wild animals, and discovering the world around me. My mom wouldn t see
me until it was time for lunch. As soon as I finished eating, I resumed my adventures until the
sun disappeared. During those excursions, I always had my older sister to accompany me. Quite
often, it was just the two of us. We didn t have a lot of friends at that time. Our family did live far
away from everyone at school, and the other parents were uncomfortable with having their
children running wild in our vast playground. Sadly, at the age of seven, we moved away from
this beautiful wooden heaven to this flat and unfamiliar city of concrete. I was initial shocked at
how hard it was to make friends. Not only did I not know how to play with other children, my
strong country accent made me somewhat of an outcast among them. In addition, I was behind the
other children in learning since the schools in

Spirit bear(Kermode Bear)
Kermode bears today are very rare to find. Human Beings are going out to find a Kermode bear you
will probably not find one. However, these bears are really rare off the coast of the Princess Royal
and Gribbell island. Nearly 100 black, white bears exist on this big and beautiful world. This type
of bears are nearly extinct, Because people try to hunt the extinct animals. Black white bears
have a rare double recessive gene in it s body. This is how people have the white and black fur.
When 2 parents have the same recessive gene the result is white fur for their young. A lot people
think that these bears are Polar Bears or even Albino s, but they are just Kermode Bears. Twenty

of Orr, Minnesota a black, white bear was also found. When they found the bear genetics were
never studied. To this day they still haven t studied the black, white bear s genetics. Then
another Kermode bear was found in 2004 300 miles northwest of Beausejour near Cedar Lake,
Manitoba. This cub was named Maskwa, also it also carried the same genetics that black, white
bears have to this day. So to this day there are less than 100 Kermode bears alive and wealthy on
this humble earth. Scientist have also figured out many reasons why Kermode bears are dying
out, is because they use them for fur and a coat which is really bad because humans also are
allergic or can t have them because of other reasons.
Why is the fur of the Kermode bear always black white type? Use cite evidence to support your

Emily Dickinson s Impact On American Poetry
Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous poets that has ever lived, next to Shakespeare and
Edgar Allan Poe. Interestingly, Dickinson published less than ten poems before she died. Although
Dickinson never saw any success in her lifetime, she still made a huge impact on American poetry
today. Emily and Edward Dickinson gave birth to Emily Dickinsonon December 10, 1830 (Emily
Dickinson s Bio). She was an exceptionally well educated for a woman at the time and attended
Amherst Academy for seven years. Even though Dickinson attended the seminary, she did not join
the Calvinist church, which her whole family was a part of. She struggled with the idea of original
sin and just could not accept the severity of beliefs Her rejection of

Career Field Of Information Technology
In the career field of information technology, professional writing skills and abilities are an asset
to becoming a successful employee. Some specific writing skills needed are grammar, spelling,
and structure. When it comes to writing, both professionals who work in the field and career
guidebooks suggest that if a person is interested in this career path, he or she should be able to have
clear communicationskills. Writingin this career is about communicating with the employees, and
the manager of the company. The manager and Co workers will read maintenance logs and step by
step instructions, writing those documents in a professional manner, shows the skill the employee
has. Without being able to clearly communicate, work to others, and employee s skills will not
benefit the company. Although writing is not the most important aspect of the job, it is a required
skill.
To succeed and advance in this career field, the first specific writing skill one must develop is
spelling. Readers will not be able to comprehend documents, if words are not spelled the correct
way. In order to become proficient in this skill, one must take the time to read, whether it be
books, articles, or a script. Bombards the mind with new words and lingo, on a daily basis,
increase the retention of how to properly spell and use a said word. Another specific skill is
grammar, and this can be developed by revising papers and fixing those constant grammatical
errors. Doing so, hardwires the brain

Case Brief
I: Elements of the crime
Mr. Jeffrey Skilling was one of three executives at Enron Corporation that were indicted for
manipulating financials to show the public inflated numbers about Enron s profitability. By
showing these numbers to the public they were trying to mislead the public into thinking the
company was more profitable than it really was. Mr. Jeffrey Skilling was convicted by a Texas
federal district court of conspiracy, securities fraud, making false representations to auditors, and
insider trading. Mr. Skilling had been the C.E.O. of Enron Corp. Mr. Skilling appealed, he argued
he was prosecuted by the government under an invalid legal theory and that the jury he had was
biased.

Mr. Skilling had been the C.E.O. of Enron Corp. Mr. Skilling appealed, he argued he was
prosecuted by the government under an invalid legal theory and that the jury he had was biased.
III. Issues
Mr. Skilling argued that voir dire lasted only five hours and did not sufficiently question jurors.
This argument from Mr. Skilling failed because the record from the court showed that voir dire
was completed properly. Mr. Skilling also argued that the court should have never tried him in
Houston. Mr. Skilling pointed out prior cases where the Court decided that due to extreme media
coverage there was a possibility of juror prejudice that required the courts to change the venue.
However, I believe that Mr. Skilling s case differs from these prior cases which were all in small
communities, had media coverage that showed the defendant confessions, and trials that occurred
right after the crime and media coverage.
I also believe that Skilling s jury acquitted him of several charges, due to this face I believe that it
is very unlikely that there was any juror prejudice. Even though the media coverage of Skilling
seems to all be positive, I do not believe that it was not to the necessary level to show that there
would be juror prejudice. Due to all of these reasons, I do not believe that the district court made
any errors by denying Skilling s request for a venue change.
IV. Holding (the final decision)
Mr. Skilling moved to have his trial transferred

Similarities And Differences Between The Chimney Sweeper...
Both The Chimney Sweepers poems were written during the industrial revolution. During the
industrial revolution families were living in poverty, and times were challenging. Often times for
families to survive they would sell their children to master sweeps, or master sweeps would
welcome orphans and homeless children into the industry of menial labour. They used children
between the ages of five to ten depending on their size. Parents would often sell their children
younger, because their small frames were more desirable. Even though The Chimney Sweeper
(1789) and The Chimney Sweeper (1794) were written five years apart they show many similarities
and differences. A major difference between the two puzzles is the way the author... Show more

Never mind it, for when your head s bare, You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair
(line 6 8). Also in the fifth stanza Tom describes his dream. Then naked and white, all their bags

good boy, He d have God for his father, and never want joy (line 21 24). He dreams that after
chimney sweepers die they go on to see God and live happily. The children just have to pay the
price on earth before they have happiness, but they were all very hopeful. However, the children

think they have done me no injury (line 9 10). The children are becoming more and more bitter.
All their hope is being lost overtime. Now the children don t think they have a plan for the
future. This lifestyle has had a major impact on their life. Being chimney sweepers, being
tormented and having to endure terrible conditions. The absence of the parents in both poems is
noticeable. In Songs of Innocence And my father sold me while yet my tongue (line 2) and in

When Is Whistleblowing Wrong
INTRODUCTION The number of whistleblowing incidents has increased exponentially in recent
years. Two of the most major being Cynthia Cooper and Sherron Watkins (Whistleblowers of
both Worldcom and Enron). There has been an increase in exposure of current wrongdoings to
the supervisory bodies and enforcement agencies worldwide. (Bowen et al., 2008). It s sometimes
said that Ralph Nader came up with the term, but the practice of whistleblowing goes back to the
late 19th century. British personnel of the government, in the form of local unarmed police or
bobbies, would blow the whistle so that good samaritans could be alerted to help chase and
apprehend thieves. (Griscom, 2014). For acts of exposure to be considered whistleblowing there...

Students will need to provide a folder to keep any work, as well as login information. This needs to
be brought to class each week.
Students will be required to have Internet access, whether that be through home use or through
public wi fi such as a library. Much of the work in the class is completed at school, however several
assignments do have work at home as needed.
Classroom Expectations
Students will enter the classroom in a quiet and orderly fashion. 6th 8th grade students will usually
start at their computer stations. Students will exit in the same fashion when leaving the lab.
Each student will have an assigned computer station and headphones and treat these with care.
Headphones should be bagged and placed in the bin at the end of class.
Students will work on assignments independently unless otherwise specified.
If students have a question, a raised hand will alert the teacher to the need. Leaving your computer
station is not an appropriate way to seek help.
Students are to remain on task with the materials given. Searching the Internet, going to sites not
approved, checking personal email, or spending time on other work outside of computers without
permission is a breach of the Acceptable Use Policy of Our Lady of Victory Handbook, and will be
assessed as a disciplinary concern as well as a loss of computer time during class.
Students will close all programs, save all work, and leave their computer on the home screen or
desktop at the end of the class.

Clinical neuropsychologists evaluate patients using one of three general methods. The first method
is to use an assessment technique in which a fixed battery of tests is given and in which we only
want to know what functions are impaired and what functions are not impaired. The most
commonly used representative of this type of test is the Halstead
Reitan Neuropsychological Battery. The second method is to use an assessment technique in which
a fixed battery of tests is given but in this method there is a hierarchical arrangement of items
within each subtest so that if a function is impaired, the level at which it is impaired can be
determined. The most common representative of this type of test is the Luria Nebraska.
Common to both of these tests is a long history of research studies examining the ability of the two
batteries to measure dysfunction of the brain and to accurately identify why that dysfunction is
occurring. The third method used by neuropsychologists is the flexible battery approach. By
definition, the flexible approach is not a battery because when one uses this approach one gives a
group of tests allegedly picked for just the particular patient. (Appel, 2005) A neuropsychological
evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of cognitive and

The Importance Of Taking Risks In Beowulf
De Armas, Albert M. Ascorbe English 4 P.7 10/15/17 The Importance of Taking Risks Beowulf
set his ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate
the people of Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger
brought America together and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his
body to the edge to live the life he dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life,
they are our instinct. We learn to crawl despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no
matter how many falls we endure. As we become further aware of the world around us,
somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that point, many people attempt to eradicate
most risks from their life. But where would we be without our sense of exploration, our
willingness to try new things? In order to push one s boundaries, move forward as a society, and
give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks. Beowulf sees the need of taking risks
when he must help his friend across the sea in bringing peace to his land. Hrothgar s kingdom,
Denmark, is being terrorized by the vicious, bloody thirsty demons, Grendel and his mother.
Sailing across the sea, putting his own life at risk for others is an immense risk that can certainly
lead to Beowulf s demise. The Geats, who idolize Beowulf, see this risk but can comprehend that
Beowulf must go as it is the only way to save the Danes Would sail across the sea to

funky, upbeat, and groovy. The artist is entertained and amused by this kind of music. So much so,
that he expresses his joy by dancing along with his haunting motion photographs of dead soldiers.

The soldiers need to come out in a specific position when they fall down to their deaths, this
probably takes many tries. It certainly can be said that many men died to be apart of this

Gregg s Appliances Case Study

Introduction This issue for case study 1 6 is brought to us by Steve Nelson and the company of
the Gregg s Appliances, Inc. The HH Gregg Company was founded on April 15, 1955 in
Indianapolis by Henry Harold Gregg and his wife. The initial store was an 800 square feet
appliance showroom and office. Since then the company has expanded and with that expansion the
company needed more and more information technology in order to harness the power of the
information they had acquired. But in 2006 the current CIO, Steve Nelson, was facing a deadline.
The deadline was the HP, which was Gregg s principal information technology vendor, has chosen

The bonuses to this choice would be lower costs compared to Delphi and Sentra, Gregg s could
maintain current business processes and there is limited training required. But the Texas Firm
UNIX platform does not move Gregg s to an industry standard and it requires significant
development staff time. The other UNIX choice was from Ex ADI costing $4 $5 million. The
process for this change would be to hire programmers and re write into a UNIX platform
internally. The biggest benefit to this selection was that it allows for phase in implementation,
which means no business will be stopped. It is also much cheaper than Delphi and Sentra options.
The software will also be high adaptable and customizable and limited training will be required.
But this will not move the company to an industry standard and nothing will seem new. There are
several big risks when changing important software in a large company. It could lead to a sudden
halt of the business during the deployment because of a failed database, a bad internet connection or
the inability of staff to input or process orders. The system might not be able to handle the work
load. Lastly, there could be an unexpected complete system shutdown. There are also other costs to
consider. Along with the implementation and annual maintenance costs outlined in the summary,
Nelson Must also consider other costs including: * Training costs * Testing costs * Costs of lost

Jfk Inaugural Speech Essay
The inaugurations of presidents have always been momentous events in American history. These
include the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. Many Americans remember this day as the
beginning of Kennedy s legacy, one that revolved around uniting the people of the United States of
America to work towards a positive future, as well as uniting the countries of the world. Kennedy s
inaugural address and a photograph, credited to the United StatesArmy Signal Corps, of Chief
Justice Earl Warren administering the Oath of Officeto Kennedy uncover and emphasize how unity
among Americans was a vital aspect of his legacy as President. Eleanor Clift, an American political
reporter, shows in her article, Inside Kennedy s Inauguration, 50 Years On, how memorable
Kennedy s inauguration is for Americans, and how memorable Kennedy himself is as President.
Kennedy s inaugural address reveals his legacy by expressing his goal of unifying Americans using
antithesis and syntax to contrast selfishness with selflessness, emphasizing that Americans should
be working towards selflessness and unification. The photograph of Kennedy taking the oath of
office mirrors his legacy of unifying the country and the virtue of selflessness with its wide range,
capturing not only Kennedy, but the people around him as well. In his address, Kennedy speaks of
how opposing sides in any fight should work together towards a common goal, rather than fight
each other and never be able to achieve their goals.

Criminal Justice Seventh Edition, Individual Liberty And...
In a constitutional democracy, the balance stands between two important aspects of human life;
one of those aspects, perhaps in the view of many the most important one is individual liberty
and privacy (Samaha, 6). According to Joel Samaha, author of the book Criminal Justice Seventh
Edition, individual liberty and privacy refers to the idea of doing as you wish, coming and going
at any time you see suitable, and not having to give reports of your whereabouts to anyone; all this
of course, taking into account that you must abide by the laws governing a particular society
(Samaha, 6). Though it can be argued otherwise, we as Americans for the most part experience
individual liberty and privacy to a great extent. As American citizens, we have the choice to choose
as we wish; except, however, those whose actions drove them to imprisonment. It is no surprise, that
prisoninmates have very little to choose from as they meet the sentences imposed on them due to
the social violation they decided to engage in; because of books, documentaries, and other sources
of information, many believe that prison inmates are nothing more than a burden who utilize tax
money for their survival, as they in return, rehabilitate themselves and become law abiding
citizens of society. Despite having some choices such as recreation, the ability to work, and the
access to religious programs, according to a prisoner who spent the majority of his life on death
row, prison can drive a person to insanity.

Persuasive Essay On Whitewater Canoeing
Many people love the excitement of extreme sports. One of those sports is whitewater canoeing,
which involves going over waterfalls and battling strong currents. The problem is that the canoe
can get wedged between rocks and stuff, or the person may be thrown into the freezing water.
Some precautions can be taken, like wearing life jackets and helmets, but the sport is still
hazardous. Age restrictions should be set for whitewater canoeing, because serious injuries or
death may occur from the river features like rocks, branches, and waterfalls. Whitewater canoeing
is a very intense sport. The rocks are dangerous, and people may get hit by their friends paddles if
a collision knocks someone out the boat. Spring water and ice water

IMPROVING STUDENT LEARNING BEHAVIOUR
Case Brief
The case I would like to address in this assignment is based on one of my 2009/2010 NC classes
in the afternoon. Despite the initial group discussion on expected behaviour, this group was
demonstrating a whole host of disruptive behaviours. This group also included a special needs
student, who was being supported by a Learning Support Assistant, whom I assumed had been
briefed on the needs. The observed disruptive behaviour included the following:

Persistent talking

Proposed Ways to Improve Behaviour (1000 words)
One can argue that the potential to cause disruptive behaviour from the perspective of a student or a
group of students does not automatically result in disruptive or troublesome behaviour. Such
behaviour can be kept dormant, controlled, neutralised or changed over a period of time.
Keeping troublesome/disruptive behaviour dormant is not the ideal solution and although it has its
short term benefits, it may adversely affect the rapport between teacher and learners not a good
start. Abatement, enhancing or changing disruptive behaviour requires certain skills and so it is
hoped that by addressing the pre requisite, specifying an appropriate methodology, identification,
and selection of appropriate techniques a logical flow to this section is established.

After reading the short story, Because My Father Always Said He Was the Only Indian Who
Saw Jimi Hendrix Play The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock by Sherman Alexie, Alexie
follows all six elements such as ideas, organization, voice, word choice, fluidity in sentences and
last but not least, conversation. When looking at the Ideas of the short piece and how it was
created, one of the most noticeable things is the revealing of the plot. Just by looking at the title
you have an idea that the short piece will be about the relationship between the father and with
Jimi Hendrix. Alexie reveals in the information in a chronological order as well as use bigger
details that later explain the smaller details that were in the short piece. For example, in the

Alexie draws in the reader by first telling a short story about her father back in the 1970 s. Alexie
then goes on in briefly telling the reader what prison was like for their father. Eventually moving
on to how the father met the mother and the relationship they father and mother had. This is an
interesting take on the way a child views their father and mother and how the father has craved
freedom. The fluidity of this short piece is excellent, it is not choppy and it gives just enough
detail without dragging the story out. It also helps that this piece is an easy read. One of the
things that I enjoyed from the piece was the comparison to how Indians would live compared to
different races mentioned in the piece. I though it gave the Victor the narrator some personality.
Victor also does a lovely job on creating the images of what his parents and their relationship, as
well as his love for his father. The analogy of Jimi Hendrix and freedom for the freedom was easy
to pick up on, especially for when the father had bought himself a motorcycle and found the

the general idea of physical attractiveness and love. This essay will identify how mate preferences

Darwin suggested that females preferred certain phenotypic traits as females could gain direct
benefit from these, for example, certain male characters are able to provide resources or offspring
and increase fecundity (Mota, 2010) .
When discussing female long term mating strategies, it has been identified that there are certain
preferences in which a female desire from a mate (Buss, 2008). Preferences include, a preference
for economic resources, a preference for industriousness and ambition, a preference for a good
physical appearance and health, and also a preference for dependability and stability. Females
prefer someone they can invest in and someone that is willing to invest in them also. And they also
desire a mate that can physically protect them and their children and that is both healthy and
displays compatibility. There are preconditions as too why these preferences have evolved, such as
the idea that resources have been made more defensible and accruable and are more controlled by
men, and the idea that men would have to be different between each other in their willingness to
somewhat invest their resources in both women and their children. Belsky et al (1991) discovered

Selecting Proprietary, Open Source, or Free Software for Business Information Systems
At first glance, the question above would probably lead you to believe that proprietary software
should be the obvious choice when selecting between the different types simply because of the
reference to the words most important. You could also look at the definitions of the three and be
convinced that proprietary software seems to be more compelling than the rest. However, with the
recent developments with software in general, I would have to agree with those that argue that

If this is the case, then why would a company choose proprietary software when even its own
developers are starting to realize that they themselves may benefit more from buying into the
open source model? While researching the question posed, and trying to get a better
understanding of all the different types of software, I came across many arguments of open vs.
proprietary. Many of the arguments that I read, the writers all had good information to support
their opinion of which type of software they thought was best. One article that I found interesting
was posted on a website (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/foobar/5204), and it proposed that the
debate of Open source vs. Proprietary be turned around to Proprietary software vs. Open . The
writer of this article posed the question, Why is proprietary the default and not open source?
After carefully researching the different types of software, I found myself asking the same
question. If you look closely at all of the so called compelling advantages that people tend to think
proprietary software has over open, you would clearly see that they aren t all that compelling. One
of the arguments raised has to do with support. There is this belief that proprietary software offers
better support......is this only because many consumers feel that if they pay top dollar for a product

The Global Eradication of Polio Essays
The Global Eradication of Polio
The possibility of the eradication of polio worldwide is an imminent and exciting prospect as the
goal year quickly approaches. In 1988, the World Health Assembly, which governs the World Health
Organization, set the goal of eliminating polio from the world by the year 2010. Many
organizations have joined the effort along with the World Health Organization: the Center for
Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, Rotary International, Global Health Network, the US
Agency for International Development, National Immunization Day, and the International

The poliovirus enters the body through the mouth, and multiplies in the throat and intestines. It may
remain unmanifested for anywhere from four to thirty five days. Once the virus is in the intestines
it has the potential to spread throughout the body by way of the bloodstream, and infiltrate into the
central nervous system. In the central nervous system, the virus can spread out along the nerve
fibers and begin to destroy the nerve cells, or motor neurons, resulting in limpness in the arms and
legs. This is known as acute flaccid paralysis and this symptom of polio (also a symptom of
several other diseases) is used to uncover new cases which may have been misdiagnosed or not
diagnosed at all (WHO 1999). This is a necessary procedure in that it helps to cover all the bases in
the pursuit of eradicating poliovirus from the earth.
It is important to note that paralysis does not occur in all polio cases. Acute poliomyelitis
manifests itself as a two phased disease in a small proportion of its victims. The first phase is
minor, a non specific febrile illness (Prevots 1999). All patients with polio experience this phase,
and only a small percentage develops the second phase, aseptic meningitis and/or paralytic disease
(Prevots 1999). The aseptic meningitis is inflammation, caused by the virus, of the meninges of the

Uncertainty in Manufacturing:
What does this mean? Uncertainty in manufacturing is when the fate of a company or a product

the intention that it will be reliable. For an example the games console Atari Jaguar which was

Furthermore a very small selections of game were made to run on Atari s firmware, the console

The Prince Of Tides By Pat Conroy
The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy is a compelling narrative in which an ordinary southern South
Carolina family, the Wingos, experience extraordinary circumstances deeply rooted in the canticles
of childhood affliction. It is a narrative of survival; survival of familial bonds, mortality, and
unaffected lovewhen the Wingo parents, Lila and Henry Wingo, thoughtlessly wreak havoc on the
fragile lives of their children: Tom, Luke, and Savannah Wingo. It is a story of sand dollars, marsh
tides, shrimp, marsh hens, meandering boats through the salt marshof Colleton, and everything the
South Carolina sun imprints upon permanently. Most importantly, The Prince of Tides is the story
of Tom Wingo, a white Southern male, who represses his past until he reconciles with the
wreckage he abandons in the salt marshes and consequently, liberates himself from his internal
affliction. Tom Wingo lives on Sullivans Island, South Carolina the sanctuary in which he neglects
his past with his three daughters and his wife, Sallie; however, their family dynamics do not
replicate those of the archetypal Southern family. For one, Tom takes care of the domestic affairs
while Sallie brings home the money as she divulges into the disciplined study of medicine. In the
1980s, the domestic Southern Belle and hard working, sexist, racist male were prevalent in the
distinct culture of the South (Conlee 4). It is evident Tom adores his daughters, but the translation

Hobbes And The State Of Nature
1.According to Hobbes the state of nature leads to a war of all against all. What Hobbes refers to
when he discusses the state of nature is a state in which there are no civil powers. To reach his
conclusion about how the world would be in the state of nature, Hobbes first explains what human
nature is and then explains the relationship between man and civil government.
As Hobbes sees it men are naturally in conflict. Hobbes sees three reasons for this. They are
competition, diffidence, and glory. Following from the right of nature, which states that all men
have the liberty to promote their own life, men naturally desire to obtain resources so as to
promote their own life and obtain some form of the good. Yet there are only so many resources,
and so men enter into conflict over competition of who will be able to have the limited resources,
since only one person can own each resource. .
Diffidence follows from this competition. Since all men are equal in terms of mind and body,
meaning that any man could kill any other man, men constantly feel threatened by other men. So,
as a way promote their own self preservation, men seek out their enemies, which is every other
person, and attempt to get rid of the threat they possess rather than let themselves be harmed by the
threat. So, men are proactive in defeating their enemies. Finally, men enter into conflict via glory.
Men value their honor and desire to be treated in a certain way. When this honor is damaged men

For the purposes of this paper, alternative music culture while has a wide definition will be
focused on the music culture that was evident in Los Angeles between about 1985 until it
became more mainstream in 1991. This centre of the culture in LA is important because most of
the important record companies were and still are, based out of LA, since there was this centre
of culture decision makers it s not surprising that the city became a hot spot for musicians who
wanted to become recognized. Also important is the sheer size of LA itself, any time you get a
city as large as it is you get a wide variety of people living in a smaller area, communities come
together and form various subgroups. One subgroup evident in LA at this time was those who fell
outside the dominate music groups of the time, mainly, new wave, hip hop and hair metal (Mullen
2005). This subgroup was as varied as those who did not fall under the alternative heading,
musically they could prescribe to anything from the funk roots of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the
70 s influenced rock of Jane s Addiction.
More importantly the people who fell under the alternative culture felt like their voices were not
being heard in the music that dominated the air waves at the time. It can be hypothesized that the
alternative music culture in LA grew out of a rejection of the hyper masculine, misogynistic values
of the hair metal scene that dominated LA and popular music culture for much of the 80 s. A

Essay on The Decline of British Military Innovation
World War I was perhaps the greatest catalyst for military innovation in modern history. The speed
in which the doctrinal, technical and tactical changes were developed and implemented was
astounding. At the end of World War I, Britain was at the forefront of doctrinal and technological
innovation in the field of armor and aircraft warfare. The factors which caused Britain to lose their
innovative edge in these areas prior to World War II was the 10 year rule policy, operational
attitude of the British Army, and an emphasis on land based aviation. At the conclusion of World
War I, Britain had the largest navyin the world, a brand new Royal Air Force(RAF) and an army that

The ten year policy was used by the British Government to continually decrease defense spending
until the policy was ended in 1932. The second factor that stifled the innovation of the British
military is the operational attitude of the military leadership. The British military failed to study
the lessons learned from World War I until 1932. This failure to study the battles of the war in a
timely manner resulted in the development of inferior doctrine and training concepts. If the lessons
would have been learned earlier than 1932, substantial changes could have been made to the
British doctrine and professional military education system prior to 1932. The structural,
leadership and cultural changes to the British Army after World War I contributed to a pervasive
disinterest in innovation. The ideas and attitudes of the military leadership remained those of the
prewar army. Those who seemed to be innovators were outcast and the leadership of the British
Army did not take their ideas seriously. Between 1923 and 1928, the British Army conducted

Descriptive Essay On The Slaughter House
This is absolutely despicable, these are living breathing creatures.
I stared out from the dirty car window and I sat in my parked car across the road from the
slaughter house. Hundreds of cows milled aimlessly with glazed eyes, through dust clouds of
the overturned earth. I watched as several other cars pulled up behind mine, checking in my rear
view mirror to see a familiar face. Bianca in her little yellow bug looked so out of place on this
filthy dirt road. Today was going to be the day we put a stop to the slaughter. Bianca stepped out of
her car and I watched as she slowly walked towards the fence of the slaughter house. A man parked
further behind us called out something illegible but she took no heed.
Ok... this is it.
I jumped out of my little old truck, and sprinted across the road to the gate. Bianca had cut the
lock and stood back as I slammed the gate wide open. The cows stared with starved for attention
but overfed ,eyes in my direction. I ran through the tightly packed animals and shoved over the
nearest feeding trough , motioning to Bianca to come with me. She shook her head and backed
away, but held the gate open. I began to push the nearest bull and he bucked , starting a panic. The
animals raced towards the gate as Bianca pressed herself against it to avoid being trampled. My
laugh could be heard even over the frantic mooing of panicked animals.
Take this you inhumane bast****!
A shout echoed through the compound and I turned around quickly to see

  • 2. Insidious Flowers Attract the Greatest Beauty John Steinbeck s East of Eden tells the story of the lives of many people, each chapter focusing on a different person or group. The proponents of the novel trail along the characters and displays a contrast between them. The characters struggle between evil and good not only with themselves, but with each other. In his story, East of Eden, Steinbeck places Cathy s demonic and deceiving personality together with Adam s pure hearted temperament to demonstrate contradictions in nature. Steinbeck uses the calm, fresh setting of Salinas Valleyto create a distinctive atmosphere. The novel follows the characters and their families in North America. The beginning of the novel consists of an atmosphere in which both Adam Trask and Cathy Ames live in. They both live on the east coast and explore its tenebrous tangibility. Adam lives a life of fear and pain in the east: first in the gruesome and bloody war, and then with his brother Charles. While this is detrimental to Adam, the gloominess and susceptibility of the east coast is perfect for Cathy. She learns that there she can use ... manipulation [to] gain and keep power over anyone, (Steinbeck, 75). Eventually, Adam and Cathy meet and Adam falls in love with her. • 4. I Was Born For The Woods I was born in the woods. Technically speaking, I was born at West Side Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, but brought home and raised in the woods. Five years before I arrived, my parents purchased nine acres of land in Tennessee and built a house that backed into four hundred acres of land. It was heavily covered in trees and brush a place where all of God s handiwork was still in its original state. They cleared away just enough land for a house and a small yard; the rest belonged to the wild. From the time I could walk, the outdoors called to me. When the sun was up, I was outside exploring, chasing wild animals, and discovering the world around me. My mom wouldn t see me until it was time for lunch. As soon as I finished eating, I resumed my adventures until the sun disappeared. During those excursions, I always had my older sister to accompany me. Quite often, it was just the two of us. We didn t have a lot of friends at that time. Our family did live far away from everyone at school, and the other parents were uncomfortable with having their children running wild in our vast playground. Sadly, at the age of seven, we moved away from this beautiful wooden heaven to this flat and unfamiliar city of concrete. I was initial shocked at how hard it was to make friends. Not only did I not know how to play with other children, my strong country accent made me somewhat of an outcast among them. In addition, I was behind the other children in learning since the schools in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mr. Skilling appealed, he argued he was prosecuted by the government under an invalid legal theory and that the jury he had was biased. III. Issues Mr. Skilling argued that voir dire lasted only five hours and did not sufficiently question jurors. This argument from Mr. Skilling failed because the record from the court showed that voir dire was completed properly. Mr. Skilling also argued that the court should have never tried him in Houston. Mr. Skilling pointed out prior cases where the Court decided that due to extreme media coverage there was a possibility of juror prejudice that required the courts to change the venue. However, I believe that Mr. Skilling s case differs from these prior cases which were all in small communities, had media coverage that showed the defendant confessions, and trials that occurred right after the crime and media coverage. I also believe that Skilling s jury acquitted him of several charges, due to this face I believe that it is very unlikely that there was any juror prejudice. Even though the media coverage of Skilling seems to all be positive, I do not believe that it was not to the necessary level to show that there would be juror prejudice. Due to all of these reasons, I do not believe that the district court made any errors by denying Skilling s request for a venue change. IV. During the industrial revolution families were living in poverty, and times were challenging. Often times for families to survive they would sell their children to master sweeps, or master sweeps would welcome orphans and homeless children into the industry of menial labour. They used children between the ages of five to ten depending on their size. Parents would often sell their children younger, because their small frames were more desirable. Ascorbe English 4 P.7 10/15/17 The Importance of Taking Risks Beowulf set his ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one s boundaries, move forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks. Beowulf sees the need of taking risks when he must help his friend across the sea in bringing peace to his land. Hrothgar s kingdom, Denmark, is being terrorized by the vicious, bloody thirsty demons, Grendel and his mother. Sailing across the sea, putting his own life at risk for others is an immense risk that can certainly lead to Beowulf s demise. In a constitutional democracy, the balance stands between two important aspects of human life; one of those aspects, perhaps in the view of many the most important one is individual liberty and privacy (Samaha, 6). According to Joel Samaha, author of the book Criminal Justice Seventh Edition, individual liberty and privacy refers to the idea of doing as you wish, coming and going at any time you see suitable, and not having to give reports of your whereabouts to anyone; all this of course, taking into account that you must abide by the laws governing a particular society (Samaha, 6). Though it can be argued otherwise, we as Americans for the most part experience individual liberty and privacy to a great extent. As American citizens, we have the choice to choose as we wish; except, however, those whose actions drove them to imprisonment. It is no surprise, that prisoninmates have very little to choose from as they meet the sentences imposed on them due to the social violation they decided to engage in; because of books, documentaries, and other sources of information, many believe that prison inmates are nothing more than a burden who utilize tax money for their survival, as they in return, rehabilitate themselves and become law abiding citizens of society. Despite having some choices such as recreation, the ability to work, and the access to religious programs, according to a prisoner who spent the majority of his life on death row, prison can drive a person to insanity. ... Once the virus is in the intestines it has the potential to spread throughout the body by way of the bloodstream, and infiltrate into the central nervous system. In the central nervous system, the virus can spread out along the nerve fibers and begin to destroy the nerve cells, or motor neurons, resulting in limpness in the arms and legs. This is known as acute flaccid paralysis and this symptom of polio (also a symptom of several other diseases) is used to uncover new cases which may have been misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all (WHO 1999). This is a necessary procedure in that it helps to cover all the bases in the pursuit of eradicating poliovirus from the earth. It is important to note that paralysis does not occur in all polio cases. Acute poliomyelitis manifests itself as a two phased disease in a small proportion of its victims. The first phase is minor, a non specific febrile illness (Prevots 1999). All patients with polio experience this phase, and only a small percentage develops the second phase, aseptic meningitis and/or paralytic disease (Prevots 1999). The aseptic meningitis is inflammation, caused by the virus, of the meninges of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Court of Justice held that the relevant provisions were insufficient to be directly effective, nonetheless the full effectiveness of EU law would be reduced if individuals were unable to have redress when their rights were infringed by the state s breach of EU law. Quality of the product is vital, consumers expect to buy products with the intention that it will be reliable. For an example the games console Atari Jaguar which was released in the early 1990 s. Featuring a 64 bit system it was very powerful for its time, and was significantly cheaper then rivals. So to the average person you d think this would have been a huge success. However in the marketing campaigns the slogan Do The Maths was used as a sales tactic, unfortunately this lead to potential customers being made redundant, this was seen as a cheeky ploy on Atari s part. The design was not ergonomic, the control pad was simply too big and consisted of loads of buttons which rendered the feel of the pad uncomfortable. Furthermore a very small selections of game were made to run on Atari s firmware, the console also didn t have a great software to run in the first place. Unfortunately the console was a failure and also led to Atari s demise. So by looking at that example, that was believed to be a huge success but since little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Prince Of Tides By Pat Conroy The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy is a compelling narrative in which an ordinary southern South Carolina family, the Wingos, experience extraordinary circumstances deeply rooted in the canticles of childhood affliction. It is a narrative of survival; survival of familial bonds, mortality, and unaffected lovewhen the Wingo parents, Lila and Henry Wingo, thoughtlessly wreak havoc on the fragile lives of their children: Tom, Luke, and Savannah Wingo. It is a story of sand dollars, marsh tides, shrimp, marsh hens, meandering boats through the salt marshof Colleton, and everything the South Carolina sun imprints upon permanently. Most importantly, The Prince of Tides is the story of Tom Wingo, a white Southern male, who represses his past until he reconciles with the wreckage he abandons in the salt marshes and consequently, liberates himself from his internal affliction. Tom Wingo lives on Sullivans Island, South Carolina the sanctuary in which he neglects his past with his three daughters and his wife, Sallie; however, their family dynamics do not replicate those of the archetypal Southern family. For one, Tom takes care of the domestic affairs while Sallie brings home the money as she divulges into the disciplined study of medicine. In the 1980s, the domestic Southern Belle and hard working, sexist, racist male were prevalent in the distinct culture of the South (Conlee 4). It is evident Tom adores his daughters, but the translation of his love comes in subtle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Hobbes And The State Of Nature 1.According to Hobbes the state of nature leads to a war of all against all. What Hobbes refers to when he discusses the state of nature is a state in which there are no civil powers. To reach his conclusion about how the world would be in the state of nature, Hobbes first explains what human nature is and then explains the relationship between man and civil government. As Hobbes sees it men are naturally in conflict. Hobbes sees three reasons for this. They are competition, diffidence, and glory. Following from the right of nature, which states that all men have the liberty to promote their own life, men naturally desire to obtain resources so as to promote their own life and obtain some form of the good. Yet there are only so many resources, and so men enter into conflict over competition of who will be able to have the limited resources, since only one person can own each resource. . Diffidence follows from this competition. Since all men are equal in terms of mind and body, meaning that any man could kill any other man, men constantly feel threatened by other men. So, as a way promote their own self preservation, men seek out their enemies, which is every other person, and attempt to get rid of the threat they possess rather than let themselves be harmed by the threat. So, men are proactive in defeating their enemies. Finally, men enter into conflict via glory. Men value their honor and desire to be treated in a certain way. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the purposes of this paper, alternative music culture while has a wide definition will be focused on the music culture that was evident in Los Angeles between about 1985 until it became more mainstream in 1991. This centre of the culture in LA is important because most of the important record companies were and still are, based out of LA, since there was this centre of culture decision makers it s not surprising that the city became a hot spot for musicians who wanted to become recognized. Also important is the sheer size of LA itself, any time you get a city as large as it is you get a wide variety of people living in a smaller area, communities come together and form various subgroups. One subgroup evident in LA at this time was those who fell outside the dominate music groups of the time, mainly, new wave, hip hop and hair metal (Mullen 2005). This subgroup was as varied as those who did not fall under the alternative heading, musically they could prescribe to anything from the funk roots of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the 70 s influenced rock of Jane s Addiction. More importantly the people who fell under the alternative culture felt like their voices were not being heard in the music that dominated the air waves at the time. It can be hypothesized that the alternative music culture in LA grew out of a rejection of the hyper masculine, misogynistic values of the hair metal scene that dominated LA and popular music culture for much of the 80 s. • 41. Essay on The Decline of British Military Innovation World War I was perhaps the greatest catalyst for military innovation in modern history. The speed in which the doctrinal, technical and tactical changes were developed and implemented was astounding. At the end of World War I, Britain was at the forefront of doctrinal and technological innovation in the field of armor and aircraft warfare. The factors which caused Britain to lose their innovative edge in these areas prior to World War II was the 10 year rule policy, operational attitude of the British Army, and an emphasis on land based aviation. At the conclusion of World War I, Britain had the largest navyin the world, a brand new Royal Air Force(RAF) and an army that had extended its technical, tactical and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ten year policy was used by the British Government to continually decrease defense spending until the policy was ended in 1932. The second factor that stifled the innovation of the British military is the operational attitude of the military leadership. The British military failed to study the lessons learned from World War I until 1932. This failure to study the battles of the war in a timely manner resulted in the development of inferior doctrine and training concepts. If the lessons would have been learned earlier than 1932, substantial changes could have been made to the British doctrine and professional military education system prior to 1932. The structural, leadership and cultural changes to the British Army after World War I contributed to a pervasive disinterest in innovation. The ideas and attitudes of the military leadership remained those of the prewar army. Those who seemed to be innovators were outcast and the leadership of the British Army did not take their ideas seriously. Between 1923 and 1928, the British Army conducted numerous field exercises to determine the proper use of mechanized or armored forces. Although some shortfalls were identified in these maneuvers, the overall potential of armored forces was evident. These tests identified the tactical advantages of firepower and maneuver of armored forces and the considerable logistical and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I stared out from the dirty car window and I sat in my parked car across the road from the slaughter house. Hundreds of cows milled aimlessly with glazed eyes, through dust clouds of the overturned earth. I watched as several other cars pulled up behind mine, checking in my rear view mirror to see a familiar face. Bianca in her little yellow bug looked so out of place on this filthy dirt road. Today was going to be the day we put a stop to the slaughter. Bianca stepped out of her car and I watched as she slowly walked towards the fence of the slaughter house. A man parked further behind us called out something illegible but she took no heed. Ok... this is it. I jumped out of my little old truck, and sprinted across the road to the gate. Bianca had cut the lock and stood back as I slammed the gate wide open. The cows stared with starved for attention but overfed ,eyes in my direction. I ran through the tightly packed animals and shoved over the nearest feeding trough , motioning to Bianca to come with me. She shook her head and backed away, but held the gate open. I began to push the nearest bull and he bucked , starting a panic. The animals raced towards the gate as Bianca pressed herself against it to avoid being trampled. My laugh could be heard even over the frantic mooing of panicked animals. Take this you inhumane bast****! A shout echoed through the compound and I turned around quickly to see ...
