Digital & Media Literacy

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Major? Class Rank?
  • #3 How many Comm majors? How many Seniors? Other majors? Not a lecture – interactive discussion...ask questions when you have them!
  • #6 Before we can define social media platforms, let’s look first at the definitions of Digital and Media Literacy, which are 2 distinct definitions.
  • #7 Digital literacy is the marrying of the two terms digital and literacy; however, it is much more than a combination of the two terms. Digital information is a symbolic representation of data, and literacy refers to the ability to read for knowledge, write coherently, and think critically about the written word.
  • #9 there are important differences in how the two have traditionally been approached from an educational standpoint: media literacy generally focuses on teaching youth to be critically engaged consumers of media, while digital literacy is more about enabling youth to participate in digital media in wise, safe and ethical ways. However, it is important to keep in mind that competencies for digital literacy and media literacy are not separate, but rather complementary and mutually supporting and are constantly evolving and intersecting in new and interesting ways.
  • #10 By the time the average student graduates from high school, he or she will have watched 15,000 hours of television and been hit by approximately 70,000 marketing messages a day. Facebook stories – VALIDATE before Liking or Sharing...
  • #12 Talk about “Ride for Olivia” as an example of building, promoting engagement and user-generated material. Mosaic of 10,000+ photos
  • #16 Hi5/Friendster – social networking for primarily gamers, 80% users outside U.S., heavy emphasis in Latin America
  • #17 Itunes-podcasts, YouTube – corporate, Haley Klinkhammer with own YouTube Channel, Picasa going away in May, being replaced by Google photos
  • #18 We also asked Pinners to choose 3 words to describe what content needs to be on Pinterest—they said useful (54%), helpful (50%) and inspiring (45%). It really is more about utility than looks.
  • #21 Why is it important?
