Evaluation
Use this template to help you evaluate your project.
You should give specific details about your work.
You should provide both written and visual examples to explain your project.
You should find areas to praise in your work. Be specific about why you think they are
good or why you are proud of them.
You should also find areas that could be improved. Look for areas that you could make
better if you went back to them. Be specific about what you would improve.
Add additional slides as you need to. Don’t be restricted by what is here.
Any blank slides should be deleted before submission.
Does your final product reflect your
original intentions?
The digital flat plan I made has been following very closely on
some pages, however in/on other pages have been changed a
lot. For example, page 11 on the digital flat plan has been
changed the most. On the digital flat plan the page is jack and his
mother, where as in the final product the page is a jack and his
mother, however I use the background from page 10. another
change was to page 3. in the digital flat plan it’s the magic beans
being thrown out the window where in the final product the
page is the bottom half of page 1 and page 3 combined.

How well have you constructed your
images?
Over all I feel like the construction of the image have gone well. I
am very happy with pages 1 – 8, however 9 – 11 could be
improved and they are not at a as high standard of quality
because I ran out of time. This is something I wish to improve on.
I used block, bold colours as this would make it more appealing
to young children (the target audience). I feel like the texture
that was used on the castle on page 6 works very well. I think
that the text that is at the bottom of each page (telling the story)
could have been done better as it is actually slightly blurred. As
well as this, I also had to have page 6 a different size for the
clipping mask effect to work properly.
Page 1 Page 9
How well have you used text to anchor
your images
The text on the pages is one of the things I would like to go back
and improve as the text is blurred. I also feel like the only pages
were the text and images/scene shows the something's without
the reader have to use there imagination/assume. These are
pages 2, 4, 5, and 9.
Page 2 Page 5
Is your product suitable for your
audience?
The indented audience was/is 3 to 7 year olds of both gender. I
feel like the final product would/is very suitable for this
audience as I have use similar designs and colour schemes as
already existing children's books. I also tried to use simpler
language when it came to the text at the bottom of each page as
so the young audience would be able to understand it. However
I didn’t want to make it too simple as the parent would also be
reading/buying the book so it would also have to appeal to them
to some existent.
What do you like/dislike about the
techniques you have used?
I like the use of the of the clipping mask on page 6 with the
castle. I feel like it give a very visual appealing effect and gives
the page a nice unique look and stands out. However on page 7
and 9 the clipping mask effect could be used/done better as I
feel it doesn’t work as effectively as it does on page 6. I also feel
like the clipping mask could have been used/done better on the
curtains on pages 7 and 9. The effect that I create on page 8 with
polygonal lasso tool (text on page) works very effectively and am
very happy with it. I also used the warp tool to create certain
shapes that I needed i.e. the hills in the background. I also used
the perspective tool once on the beanstalk in the last page when
its been cut down.
Page 7 Page 6
Page 11
What do you like/dislike about how
your final product looks?
There are many things that I like about the final product including the
effect/look of the bright, block colour design and feel like is helps to
create/make it believable that it is a real children's book. I also like the
clipping mask effect on the castle, however I had to have the page size
different to every other page for the clipping mask effect to work
effectively. I also like the designs of the characters as I feel like they
look like cartoon characters yet also looking like real people. I like page
8 as well. I dislike some of the clipping mask effect in a the last pages. I
also dislike the beanstalk in the last page as I don’t think that I have
used the perspective tool very well and the beanstalk doesn’t really
look like its fallen down/over. I also dislike the sizes of the Jack, the
magic hen and the magic harp as they are all similar sizes and I feel like
the proportions of them are wrong and that is quite obvious. I would
of also liked to have include the giant. The text at the bottom of each
page could have been done better as well.
Page 6 Page 7
Page 11 Page 8
Why did you include the content you
used?
I included the use of clipping mask tool as I felt that it would
create a interesting effect that’s not normally seen in children's
books and that it would work really well. I used block, bright
colours as this is something that is normally used in children's
books. I included the images I did because I wanted to use
images that are the type of images that someone would think of
when someone mentions that particular thing. For the text I just
put it in as I was running out of time, however I would of liked to
use a font style that would better fit the style/design of the
pages. I used the polygonal lasso tool and perspective tool when
I needed to as I wanted to use effects like these as little as
possible because I want to have solid shapes to match with the
solid colour design.
Page 2 Page 3
What signs, symbols or codes have
your used in your work?
For the castle and the other things that are ‘magical’ and that
aren't real I use/tried to use as much of the clipping tool
effect/style as this would help it to stand out and give it a very
interesting look and I feel that having theses' things stand out
would give it a unique look. For the locations I used I tried to
keep the designs of them relatively simple, but adding detail into
them i.e. having a black outlines, clipping mask effect/tool. I also
didn’t want to have too many different locations/characters. I
also use the same character design for each character as I want
them to be very easily identifiable.

Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
Media texts require us to have a certain level of cultural understanding to
be able to interpret them.
At a basic level, this could mean being able to read the language that a
magazine is written in.
At a deeper level, it means being able to interpret signs and symbols that
we use a visual shorthand to communicate ideas.
We recognise these signs in our own culture but find it harder to
understand when looking at others.
We create and attach meaning to signs and symbols in many different
forms.

Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
What is this?
This is a Norwegian Pine tree, covered in
snow and with a red ribbon on.
Our cultural understanding allows us to
interpret its meaning.
To us, in British society, it means
Christmas, presents and family.
This is because we share a cultural
knowledge.
19Creative Media Production 2012
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
There are many other signs and symbols
that we attach meaning to.
A leather jacket can imply rebellion.
A sports car can imply wealth and power.
A cross can represent religion.
20Creative Media Production 2012
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
Visual representations of everyday objects are often the same the world
over. A car appears as a car, no matter what country it appears in.
What that car means however, can be very different depending on your
cultural background.
21Creative Media Production 2012
What representations can be found in
your work?
Social groups and religions are not mentioned or touched in the
story and I don’t feel like the story in anyway says anything about
them. Age is another thing that isn’t mentioned or involved in
the story, other then the man who give jack the beans being
described as an old man. I don’t feel like the lack of variety of
character types affects the story in anyway, however I feel like if
there was a variety the story would still not be affect the story.
Page 2
What style have you employed in your
products?
I used a simple block, bold colours in my product as I felt like this
would most appeal to young children. I also feel like this is a very
visual appealing design and that it works really well as a children
book design. I was influenced by other children books that use
similar colour schemes and design styles, however I tried/didn’t
look at many other books as I did want my work/book to be
original.
What were the strengths and weaknesses
of the pre-production and planning
I feel like I could have managed my time better, however I don’t
think that I particularly bad. I did start to run out of time towards
the end and had to rush the last few pages and I think that this is
noticeable, especially when pages 1 and 11 are placed next to
each other. The digital flat plan was also quite helpful, even
thought I didn’t follow it 100%. It help as thought out the
creating of the book I had a rough idea of the design of the book.
Having the scrip and story breakdown also help in this way as
well.
Page 11Page 1
Historical and cultural context
• How does your work compare to what has come
before? What other similar products have existed in
the past? What current products exist?
The book is quite a simple version of the story and
because of this is is similar to past and present versions of
the book/story. However one difference to most version
of the story is that the giant isn't seen and plays a
relatively small part/role in the story. This is because I
couldn't’t think of an interesting way of adding/involving
him and so hearing him works and the story still flows
well and isn't affected.

Digital graphics evaluation pro forma 3

  • 2. Use this template to help you evaluate your project. You should give specific details about your work. You should provide both written and visual examples to explain your project. You should find areas to praise in your work. Be specific about why you think they are good or why you are proud of them. You should also find areas that could be improved. Look for areas that you could make better if you went back to them. Be specific about what you would improve. Add additional slides as you need to. Don’t be restricted by what is here. Any blank slides should be deleted before submission.
  • 3. Does your final product reflect your original intentions? The digital flat plan I made has been following very closely on some pages, however in/on other pages have been changed a lot. For example, page 11 on the digital flat plan has been changed the most. On the digital flat plan the page is jack and his mother, where as in the final product the page is a jack and his mother, however I use the background from page 10. another change was to page 3. in the digital flat plan it’s the magic beans being thrown out the window where in the final product the page is the bottom half of page 1 and page 3 combined.
  • 4. Page 3 Page 3Page 1 Page 1 Page 2 Digital Flat Plan Design Final Page Design Page 11 Page 11
  • 5. How well have you constructed your images? Over all I feel like the construction of the image have gone well. I am very happy with pages 1 – 8, however 9 – 11 could be improved and they are not at a as high standard of quality because I ran out of time. This is something I wish to improve on. I used block, bold colours as this would make it more appealing to young children (the target audience). I feel like the texture that was used on the castle on page 6 works very well. I think that the text that is at the bottom of each page (telling the story) could have been done better as it is actually slightly blurred. As well as this, I also had to have page 6 a different size for the clipping mask effect to work properly.
  • 7. How well have you used text to anchor your images The text on the pages is one of the things I would like to go back and improve as the text is blurred. I also feel like the only pages were the text and images/scene shows the something's without the reader have to use there imagination/assume. These are pages 2, 4, 5, and 9.
  • 9. Is your product suitable for your audience? The indented audience was/is 3 to 7 year olds of both gender. I feel like the final product would/is very suitable for this audience as I have use similar designs and colour schemes as already existing children's books. I also tried to use simpler language when it came to the text at the bottom of each page as so the young audience would be able to understand it. However I didn’t want to make it too simple as the parent would also be reading/buying the book so it would also have to appeal to them to some existent.
  • 10. What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used? I like the use of the of the clipping mask on page 6 with the castle. I feel like it give a very visual appealing effect and gives the page a nice unique look and stands out. However on page 7 and 9 the clipping mask effect could be used/done better as I feel it doesn’t work as effectively as it does on page 6. I also feel like the clipping mask could have been used/done better on the curtains on pages 7 and 9. The effect that I create on page 8 with polygonal lasso tool (text on page) works very effectively and am very happy with it. I also used the warp tool to create certain shapes that I needed i.e. the hills in the background. I also used the perspective tool once on the beanstalk in the last page when its been cut down.

  • 12. What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks? There are many things that I like about the final product including the effect/look of the bright, block colour design and feel like is helps to create/make it believable that it is a real children's book. I also like the clipping mask effect on the castle, however I had to have the page size different to every other page for the clipping mask effect to work effectively. I also like the designs of the characters as I feel like they look like cartoon characters yet also looking like real people. I like page 8 as well. I dislike some of the clipping mask effect in a the last pages. I also dislike the beanstalk in the last page as I don’t think that I have used the perspective tool very well and the beanstalk doesn’t really look like its fallen down/over. I also dislike the sizes of the Jack, the magic hen and the magic harp as they are all similar sizes and I feel like the proportions of them are wrong and that is quite obvious. I would of also liked to have include the giant. The text at the bottom of each page could have been done better as well.
  • 13. Page 6 Page 7 Page 11 Page 8
  • 14. Why did you include the content you used? I included the use of clipping mask tool as I felt that it would create a interesting effect that’s not normally seen in children's books and that it would work really well. I used block, bright colours as this is something that is normally used in children's books. I included the images I did because I wanted to use images that are the type of images that someone would think of when someone mentions that particular thing. For the text I just put it in as I was running out of time, however I would of liked to use a font style that would better fit the style/design of the pages. I used the polygonal lasso tool and perspective tool when I needed to as I wanted to use effects like these as little as possible because I want to have solid shapes to match with the solid colour design.
  • 16. What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work? For the castle and the other things that are ‘magical’ and that aren't real I use/tried to use as much of the clipping tool effect/style as this would help it to stand out and give it a very interesting look and I feel that having theses' things stand out would give it a unique look. For the locations I used I tried to keep the designs of them relatively simple, but adding detail into them i.e. having a black outlines, clipping mask effect/tool. I also didn’t want to have too many different locations/characters. I also use the same character design for each character as I want them to be very easily identifiable.
  • 18. Audience Responses Cultural competence: Media texts require us to have a certain level of cultural understanding to be able to interpret them. At a basic level, this could mean being able to read the language that a magazine is written in. At a deeper level, it means being able to interpret signs and symbols that we use a visual shorthand to communicate ideas. We recognise these signs in our own culture but find it harder to understand when looking at others. We create and attach meaning to signs and symbols in many different forms. 18Creative Media Production 2012
  • 19. Audience Responses Cultural competence: What is this? This is a Norwegian Pine tree, covered in snow and with a red ribbon on. Our cultural understanding allows us to interpret its meaning. To us, in British society, it means Christmas, presents and family. This is because we share a cultural knowledge. 19Creative Media Production 2012
  • 20. Audience Responses Cultural competence: There are many other signs and symbols that we attach meaning to. A leather jacket can imply rebellion. A sports car can imply wealth and power. A cross can represent religion. 20Creative Media Production 2012
  • 21. Audience Responses Cultural competence: Visual representations of everyday objects are often the same the world over. A car appears as a car, no matter what country it appears in. What that car means however, can be very different depending on your cultural background. 21Creative Media Production 2012
  • 22. What representations can be found in your work? Social groups and religions are not mentioned or touched in the story and I don’t feel like the story in anyway says anything about them. Age is another thing that isn’t mentioned or involved in the story, other then the man who give jack the beans being described as an old man. I don’t feel like the lack of variety of character types affects the story in anyway, however I feel like if there was a variety the story would still not be affect the story.
  • 24. What style have you employed in your products? I used a simple block, bold colours in my product as I felt like this would most appeal to young children. I also feel like this is a very visual appealing design and that it works really well as a children book design. I was influenced by other children books that use similar colour schemes and design styles, however I tried/didn’t look at many other books as I did want my work/book to be original.

  • 26. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning I feel like I could have managed my time better, however I don’t think that I particularly bad. I did start to run out of time towards the end and had to rush the last few pages and I think that this is noticeable, especially when pages 1 and 11 are placed next to each other. The digital flat plan was also quite helpful, even thought I didn’t follow it 100%. It help as thought out the creating of the book I had a rough idea of the design of the book. Having the scrip and story breakdown also help in this way as well.
  • 28. Historical and cultural context • How does your work compare to what has come before? What other similar products have existed in the past? What current products exist? The book is quite a simple version of the story and because of this is is similar to past and present versions of the book/story. However one difference to most version of the story is that the giant isn't seen and plays a relatively small part/role in the story. This is because I couldn't’t think of an interesting way of adding/involving him and so hearing him works and the story still flows well and isn't affected.
