Digital Graphics
Pixel Art 2D
Pixel art is created through the use of raster graphics
software, where images are edited on the pixel level.
Graphics in most old (or relatively limited) computer,
console, graphing calculator and mobile phone video
games are mostly pixel art.Pixel art is preferably
stored in a file format utilizing lossless data
compression, such as run-length encoding or an
indexed colour palette. GIF and PNG are two file
formats commonly used for storing pixel art. Pixel art
is often seen when sprites are used in 2D games. The sprites are made up of pixels but are
rarely seen now since graphics have improved.
Pixel Art 3D Isometric
In video games, "isometric" refers to some form of parallel
projection (commonly, the form of diametric projection
mistakenly referred to as "isometric") where the viewpoint is
rotated slightly to reveal other facets of the game environment
than are visible from a top-down perspective or side view, thereby
producing a three-dimensional effect.In the fields of computer and
video games and pixel art, the technique has become popular
because of the ease with which 2D sprite- and tile-based graphics
can be made to represent a 3D gaming environment. Because
parallel projected objects do not change size as they move about
the game field, there is no need for the computer to scale sprites
or do the complex calculations necessary to simulate visual perspective. This allowed older
8-bit and 16-bit game systems (and, more recently, handheld systems) to portray large 3D
areas easily. And, while the depth confusion problems of parallel projection can sometimes
be a problem, good game design can alleviate this.
Concept Art
Concept art is a form of illustration
where the main goal is to convey a
visual representation of a design, idea,
and/or mood for use in films, video
games, animation, or comic books
before it is put into the final product.
Concept art is also referred to as visual
development and/or concept design.Concept art is important for character design because
it can help to create an overall better design through improvement and new ideas. Sci-Fi
and Fantasy are the most common subjects where concept art is used.
Texture Art
Texture is a very important part of how the
character looks, it can make the character
look more like what it is e.g. textured skin,
hair, eyes and clothes on a human model
will give the character more life and a more
complete look. Texture art basically gives a
visual “feel” to an object / person.
Background Graphics (Urban, Forest, Clouds, Interface)
Background graphics show which type
of environment the characters / objects
are in. They appear behind the main
characters/objects at the present time.
A fantasy game for example would
possibly have a forest background which
will create an enchanting atmosphere.
Background graphics make the game
look more complete and textures are
important when creating backgrounds
such as clouds, forest, wall, space etc.
Print Media Art
Print media art is important to games; this is because a lot of people
are attracted by colourful art designs for games. The box cover for the
game has to relate to the game itself, it must be eye catching, it must
have the title of the game on the front, box art is never game play of a
game, it is usually something like concept art, this is to make the game
look more flashy to others and make them want to buy it.
