DIGITAL EYE STRAIN SYNDROME-
Effect of excessive use of digital devices on eyes
Introduction
Eye strain refers to a condition where the “eyes become tired
from intensive or ‘over’ use.” This can include reading in dim
lighting or excessive lighting, driving a car for long
periods of time, or using a computer for a long period
of time. Over a sustained period it can begin to cause headaches or
affect eyesight.
Digital Eye Strain
Digital Eye Strain describes a group of eye and vision-related
problems that result from prolonged computer, tablet,
e-reader and cell phone use. It leads to eye discomfort and
vision problems when viewing digital screens for extended periods.
Causes
• Focusing on a single task for a long length of time, such as driving or
reading
• being in an inadequately lit environment, either too dim or too bright
• feeling stressed or tired
• experiencing poor vision or eye problems like dry eyes.
Continue…
• Maintaining poor posture when viewing a digital device
• failing to blink as often as normal
• holding a digital device too far or too close to your eyes
• being exposed to extended amounts of blue light, which is the light
commonly emitted from digital devices
• viewing a screen that doesn’t have properly adjusted lighting
Complications of digital eye strain
 Problems with your retina
 Cataract
 Age-related macular degeneration
 Sleep disturbances
Diagnosis
Eye strain is diagnosed during a visit to your eye care provider’s office. During this
visit your healthcare provider will discuss the following topics:
• What symptoms you are experiencing
• When these symptoms occur and what tasks you might be doing when they happen.
• The physician may also do a physical exam to look for muscle imbalance,
uncorrected refractive errors (nearsightedness or farsightedness) and other
Treatment
Use lubricating eye drops.
Use artificial tears
Use of blue light filtering glasses
Use of anti fatigue lenses
Adjust lighting based on activity.
Wearing glasses
Prevention of digital eye
strain syndrome
Research work done on digital eye strain in
coronavirus pandemic
1. Managing the myopia epidemic and digital eye strain post COVID-19
pandemic – What eye care practitioners need to know and implement?
Jameel Rizwana Hussaindeen, Aparna Gopalakrishnan, et.al has been found that
possible complications of online classes for children in coronavirus pandemic are:
Dry eye disease
Myopia progression
Digital Eye strain
Other researches done on Digital eye strain
2. Researches compare it with cannabis addiction, “Too much
exposure to screens of mobiles and laptops leads a feeling of
isolation and anxiety in the current scenario. It can lead to
depression and an increase in neurotic traits such as nail
biting, thumb sucking and hair pulling.”
