This document provides information for parents and students about digital safety and citizenship. It discusses appropriate online behavior and avoiding inappropriate content, protecting privacy and personal information, computer viruses and hacking, fraud, digital identity and reputation. It also covers digital literacy, plagiarism, and legal and ethical issues online. Parents are encouraged to have open conversations with their children about staying safe online.

4. What is Digital Literacy?
According to Marijke (2012), “Digital Literacy is the ability
to use information and communication technologies to find,
evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring
both cognitive and technical skills.”

5. What is Digital Citizenship
Digital citizenship is the quality of the acts of the citizens
when they use technology. It should be safely, appropriate,
and responsible.

6. Online Safety and Security
According to Merton Safeguarding Children Board (2009), “e-safety is a term which means not
only the internet but other ways in which young people communicate using electronic media,
e.g. mobile phones. It means ensuring that children and young people are protected from harm
and supported to achieve the maximum benefit from new and developing technologies without
risk to themselves or others”.

9. Safety and Privacy Issues for Students
Tips for maintain our kids safety using internet:
 Tell kids that never provide their personal information
like names, address, or telephone number to any
stranger in internet.
 Never send her/his picture.
 Tell then that if they know that someone says
something mean online or something that they think is
not right they have to communicate with you or a
grown-up.
 Remind then to ask for permission of you to download
anything online.
 Tell kids do not give the password or ID to any known
person.
 Tell kids do not accept any gift from someone
unknown on the network and tell you if
someone offers a gift.
M.D. (2016) stated, “Students can be impacted
negatively in online social environments in many
ways....online predators,…sales pitches aimed at
children…privacy issues…cyberbullying…” (p.174-175)

10. Computer Viruses and Hacking
Person who secretly gains access to
computers and files without permission.
Parents, explain to yours kids what is computer viruses and hacking, and how to avoid it.
Also, what to do in case that their computers get a virus or having a suspicious hacker.

11. Fraud and Phishing
Phishing is a cybercrime in which a person or scammer send fraudulent emails or text messages posing as an authentic
institution with the purpose of getting valuable personal information such social security, bank account numbers, login IDs
and passwords to steal the person’s money and/or their identities.
Examples of phishing
 Always be suspicious of any unsolicited communication.
 Don not click on link or attachments in suspect emails, texts, or social media messages.
 Contact the purported sender if you not sure about the legitimacy by phone.
 Report suspected phishing scams to (spam@uce.gov, spam@uce.gov, reportphishing@apwg.org)

Your online reputation is how others see
you when they look for you online.

13. Ethical and LegalAccording with Merriam Webster dictionary, ethic is a set of moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or
the conducting of an activity”
Then, cyber or internet ethics may refer to the laws that people should apply to online
behavior.
 Respect the rights and property of others on the internet.
 Do not attempting to break the security of others internet users.
 Do not pretending to be someone else and getting other's information.
 Avoid chatting with unknown or strangers people.
 Do not duplicated copyrighted content without the author’s approval.
 Avoid bad language in internet.
