Digital Citizenship
Teaching students to practice safe, responsible and legal use of
technology
WEBINAR: The Digital Citizenship Survival Kit
https://www.commonsense.org/education/blog/webinar-spotlight-whats-in-your-digital-citizenship-survival-kit
Presented by Craig Badura, a public school integration specialist, this tool
brings abstract ideas to concrete understanding with props.
This webinar gives ideas of how to use common items as metaphors to
illustrate digital citizenship concepts and skills.
This digital citizenship “survival” kit can be adapted for Kindergarten to
early middle school students.
It’s fun, interactive, and educational!
Gather the props and you’re ready to go!
Rationale for
Teaching
Digital
Citizenship
Here is a link that explains, in video
form, why it is necessary to teach
Digital Citizenship. It is addressed to
parents but is applicable to teacher
librarians as they determine why
they should teach students to be
safe and responsible online.

• . . . Students must be “active, creative,
knowledgeable, and ethical participants in
our globally networked society.” (U.S. Dept.
of Education, 2010)
• “The best filter is the one between their
ears.” (Ohler, 2010)
Cyberbullying
Up to 40% of children
have been involved in
a cyberbullying
incident.
Kowalski, R. M., Giumetti, G. W., Schroeder, A. N.,
& Lattanner, M. R. (2014). Bullying in the digital
age: A critical review and meta-analysis of
cyberbullying research among youth. Psychological
Bulletin, 140(4), 1073.
Fake news
44% of kids age 10 to 18
feel they can tell fake
news stories from real
ones.
Common Sense Media. (2017).
News and America’s kids: How young people perceive
and are impacted by the news. San Francisco, CA:
Common Sense Media.
Online safety
13% of 2nd-3rd
grade students
report that they
used the Internet
to talk to people
they do not know.

internet-safety-statistics/
Essential understandings
• Digital leadership might be a better phrase than digital citizenship.
• Because so much time is spent in the digital world, we need to help students
learn, communicate, and collaborate safely and responsibly.
• Teaching digital citizenship invests in a student’s future; an online profile can help
– or hinder - a student’s prospects for their future studies, employment, and
relationships.
• Digital citizenship also teaches students how to search for and authenticate
information.
• We need to provide digital citizenship professional development for teachers; we
need a digital citizenship curriculum.
• It’s important to talk to parents too about Digital Leadership, and how they can
help their children.
What would you take to
survive in a new land?
What should be in your Digital Citizenship kit for survival in
the world of technology?
Some selected ideas from the webinar:
Survival Kit
• Inside are some of the things you
will need as you live in this “new
landscape” of media and
technology
Digital Citizenship
Kit
Digital Footprint and Reputation:
Sharpie
• Use this as the first item
• Permanent; can’t get rid of it
• Ties in with the digital tattoo
Privacy and Security: Toothbrush
• Passwords are like toothbrushes
• Don’t share
• Change every 6 months
• There are websites to test
passwords to see if they are secure
Relationships and Communication:
Toothpaste
• Can’t get back your online
information just like trying to get
toothpaste back into the tube
• Once you say something, it’s out
there
Self Image and Identity:
Packet of Seeds
• Might not be relevant to older kids
but more for younger kids getting
started online
• Planting a seed – a digital presence /
tattoo that will grow as you spend
more time online
• What kind of “plant / weed” will be
evident as we grow our digital
footprint
Information Literacy: Strainer
• We should filter some of the things
that we take in from online activity
• We wish kids would have a built in
strainer
• Tie in with authenticity on the
Internet – who we really are
• Can we believe everything we read
and see on the Internet?
• Strain out the bad stuff
Internet Safety: New Sheet of Paper
• Teaches about cyberbullying, digital
drama, or even general unkindness
on the Internet
• Crumple up the paper; dramatically
stomp on it and get it dirty
• The words and actions we do online
can leave a scar in people’s lives that
can’t be easily smoothed over
• Apologies (ie smoothing the paper
flat) can help but may not repair the
damage to the relationship
Creative Credit and Copyright:
Photo
• Take a picture of a student’s artwork
and substitute the teacher’s name
as the artist
• Useful as an example for teaching
about copyright and giving credit

Digital Citizenship Presentation

  • 1. Digital Citizenship Teaching students to practice safe, responsible and legal use of technology
  • 2. WEBINAR: The Digital Citizenship Survival Kit https://www.commonsense.org/education/blog/webinar-spotlight-whats-in-your-digital-citizenship-survival-kit Presented by Craig Badura, a public school integration specialist, this tool brings abstract ideas to concrete understanding with props. This webinar gives ideas of how to use common items as metaphors to illustrate digital citizenship concepts and skills. This digital citizenship “survival” kit can be adapted for Kindergarten to early middle school students. It’s fun, interactive, and educational! Gather the props and you’re ready to go!
  • 3. Rationale for Teaching Digital Citizenship Here is a link that explains, in video form, why it is necessary to teach Digital Citizenship. It is addressed to parents but is applicable to teacher librarians as they determine why they should teach students to be safe and responsible online. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= _wtaZXAAouI • . . . Students must be “active, creative, knowledgeable, and ethical participants in our globally networked society.” (U.S. Dept. of Education, 2010) • “The best filter is the one between their ears.” (Ohler, 2010) Cyberbullying Up to 40% of children have been involved in a cyberbullying incident. Kowalski, R. M., Giumetti, G. W., Schroeder, A. N., & Lattanner, M. R. (2014). Bullying in the digital age: A critical review and meta-analysis of cyberbullying research among youth. Psychological Bulletin, 140(4), 1073. Fake news 44% of kids age 10 to 18 feel they can tell fake news stories from real ones. Common Sense Media. (2017). News and America’s kids: How young people perceive and are impacted by the news. San Francisco, CA: Common Sense Media. Online safety 13% of 2nd-3rd grade students report that they used the Internet to talk to people they do not know. https://brandongaille.com/38-important- internet-safety-statistics/
  • 4. Essential understandings • Digital leadership might be a better phrase than digital citizenship. • Because so much time is spent in the digital world, we need to help students learn, communicate, and collaborate safely and responsibly. • Teaching digital citizenship invests in a student’s future; an online profile can help – or hinder - a student’s prospects for their future studies, employment, and relationships. • Digital citizenship also teaches students how to search for and authenticate information. • We need to provide digital citizenship professional development for teachers; we need a digital citizenship curriculum. • It’s important to talk to parents too about Digital Leadership, and how they can help their children.
  • 5. What would you take to survive in a new land? What should be in your Digital Citizenship kit for survival in the world of technology? Some selected ideas from the webinar:
  • 6. Survival Kit • Inside are some of the things you will need as you live in this “new landscape” of media and technology Digital Citizenship Kit
  • 7. Digital Footprint and Reputation: Sharpie • Use this as the first item • Permanent; can’t get rid of it • Ties in with the digital tattoo
  • 8. Privacy and Security: Toothbrush • Passwords are like toothbrushes • Don’t share • Change every 6 months • There are websites to test passwords to see if they are secure
  • 9. Relationships and Communication: Toothpaste • Can’t get back your online information just like trying to get toothpaste back into the tube • Once you say something, it’s out there
  • 10. Self Image and Identity: Packet of Seeds • Might not be relevant to older kids but more for younger kids getting started online • Planting a seed – a digital presence / tattoo that will grow as you spend more time online • What kind of “plant / weed” will be evident as we grow our digital footprint
  • 11. Information Literacy: Strainer • We should filter some of the things that we take in from online activity • We wish kids would have a built in strainer • Tie in with authenticity on the Internet – who we really are • Can we believe everything we read and see on the Internet? • Strain out the bad stuff
  • 12. Internet Safety: New Sheet of Paper • Teaches about cyberbullying, digital drama, or even general unkindness on the Internet • Crumple up the paper; dramatically stomp on it and get it dirty • The words and actions we do online can leave a scar in people’s lives that can’t be easily smoothed over • Apologies (ie smoothing the paper flat) can help but may not repair the damage to the relationship
  • 13. Creative Credit and Copyright: Photo • Take a picture of a student’s artwork and substitute the teacher’s name as the artist • Useful as an example for teaching about copyright and giving credit My name
  • 14. Topics to Cover in Teaching Digital Citizenship https://www.commonsense.org/education/digital-citizenship Internet Safety Privacy and Security Relationships and Communication Cyberbullying and Digital “Drama” Digital Footprint and Reputation Self-image and Identity Information Literacy Creative Credit and Copyright.
