Choosing a Technology Platform
            Architecture
            • Proprietary/Custom
            • Cloud-based

            Platform
            • Open Source
            • Microsoft
            • Unix/Linux

            Management
            • In-house on premises : Own team, own hardware
            • Outsourced on premises : Subcontractor/Vendor team, own hardware
            • SaaS-based: Vendor team, vendor hardware off premises
Criteria for Evaluation
                                                  Cost

                        Security Ease of Use

                                               Evaluation

                               Compatibility Maintainability

Prioritize among the above trade-offs : not all can be met simultaneously !!
Approach to Adoption
                                • Adopt technology at small levels across all functions without
major process changes e.g. use of email across all teams
        Incremental
                                • Then slowly add features and functions e.g. use of Google
                                  docs

                                • Adopt technology only in selected areas e.g. social media
         Prioritized marketing on Facebook/Twitter

                                • Adopt technology across all functions and change processes
          Big-Bang e.g. Microsoft CRM

Choose based on simplest approach – Incremental or Prioritized works best when you have limited resources

Make people come together for a cause. Keep it transparent.

Fund Raising

 • Donor Management :
     – Database for supporter details
     – Spreadsheet based tracking
     – Greenpeace uses a Custom tool to track donor details. Has integration with
         bank payments etc
 • Websites having Payment Gateways (Paypal)

                                                                                      22
Impact Measurement

 Spreadsheet data can be processed into MIS reports to measure impact
 E.g. quantum of Loan given by Micro-finance organizations.

  Online portals
       Pulse
       IRIS

                                                                            23
Scaling IT up !
• Free tools have their limitations. Make sure your spreadsheets never become more than 20 Mb and
convert your data into multiple spreadsheets if need be.

• Always save your data in files/folders on the computer. Keep multiple copies to avoid losing data
    preferably on different computers.

• When your organization size has grown where you need to track multiple donors across cities and
geographies , your volunteer base is substantial and you handle multiple high net worth projects it is time
    to switch to an ERP ( e.g. http://www.acctech.biz/industries/ngo_1.html )

• It is also preferable to handle your customer relationship via a CRM system and use analytics to help you
understand the impact of your campaigns, your donor base , your volunteer schemes etc.

• Move it online…think about the cloud.

• Big or small - IT will always be a part of your strategy!

Tips : OnlineMarketing* Get your story right. Start with a social capital or a network. Set your targets early. Build a simple website or a blog where you can tell your story. Make sure to put online payment mechanisms in place. Get your own Facebook page and get your volunteers and their friends to follow you. Tweet about your work and ask Celebrities and followers to support and spread your cause. Make people come together for a cause. Scaling IT up! • Free tools have their limitations. Make sure your spreadsheets never become more than 20 Mb and convert your data into multiple spreadsheets if need be. • Always save your data in files/folders on the computer. Keep multiple copies to avoid losing data preferably on different computers. • When your organization size has grown where you need to track multiple donors across cities and geographies , your volunteer base is substantial and you handle multiple high net worth projects it is time to switch to an ERP ( e.g. http://www.acctech.biz/industries/ngo_1.html ) • It is also preferable to handle your customer relationship via a CRM system and use analytics to help you understand the impact of your campaigns, your donor base , your volunteer schemes etc. • Move it online…think about the cloud. • Big or small - IT will always be a part of your strategy! * © Olivia Mukhopadhyay | WCED, ISB | Diffusion 2011 | Hyderabad 24
