Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells differ in their processes of transcription. Prokaryotes lack a nucleus and nucleolus, and their DNA is located in the cytoplasm. They have a single linear chromosome and use RNA polymerase to transcribe mRNA directly from DNA. Eukaryotes have a nucleus that houses their DNA, which is organized into linear chromosomes. They use RNA polymerase II to transcribe mRNA with introns that are later spliced out, producing mature mRNA ready for translation.
