The Ability of Humans to Manipulate Dna Is a Mixed...
The ability of humans to manipulate DNA is a mixed blessing
Genetically modified organisms are made moving the DNA from one species to another. DNA
contains genes which code for proteins. For plants and bacteria; restriction enzymes are used to cut
a DNA segment from a desired gene source and a bacterium plasmid. They are joined using ligase
enzymes and inserted into the plant chromosome or host bacterium. For animals the recombinant
DNA is injected into an embryo and transferred to a recipient mother. The organisms will now
express a new protein. Proteins determine form and metabolism. Genetic engineering changes the
natural DNA of living things, cutting across species boundaries.
Transgene s effects vary with position. The foreign ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marker genes used to see which cells took up the foreign DNA cause a problem with antibiotic
resistance. These markers are usually antibiotic resistant so cells with no foreign DNA can be killed
by antibiotic treatment.
Virulent genes with the ability to penetrate immune systems will inevitably increase the frequency
of horizontal gene transfers. Once genes can freely transfer between species, species start to lose
their distinguishing characteristics. Reducing biodiversity and costing us undiscovered natural
miracles.
Research is ongoing in growing agricultural products directly in the laboratory. Food and fibre
being are grown in tissue culture in giant bacteria baths much cheaper than the price of growing
them on the land. The shift to indoor agriculture could herald the eventual end of the agricultural
era. Millions of farmers in both the developing and developed worlds would be uprooted from the
land. Conversely genetically engineered plants as chemical factories are slowly being released
outside.
Controversial genetic modifications are also being done on animals. A combination of genetic
engineering and cloning is being used for the development of market animals modified for
increased growth and reduced fat. GE animals are being developed as factories for the production
of pharmaceuticals and as sources of organs for transplantation into humans. In order to overcome
organ rejection problems pigs are being

Taking A Look At Insomnia
Unlike the stigmas and taboos associated with many mental illnesses, Insomnia is a mental illness
that is, by comparison, more well received in contemporary society. Being featured in numerous
types of popular culture, such as well known songs, chronic sleeplessness is unique in its near
mainstream relevance (Lynsky, 2008). Insomniais defined as chronic complaints of unsatisfactory
sleep, despite having an adequate opportunity to sleep (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
According to the DSM, The diagnosis of insomnia disorder is given whether it occurs as an
independent condition or is comorbid with another mental disorder (e.g., major depressive
disorder), medical condition (e.g., pain), or another sleep disorder(e.g., a breathing related sleep
disorder).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Insomnia may also manifest as a clinical feature of a more predominant mental disorder. This is
significant, as is defines a distinct difference between primary insomnia and insomnia induced by
another factor or mental illness. It is notable that this condition is prominent throughout society
According to one study, over 35% of those interviewed complained about symptoms related to
insomnia and 10% of those reported effects that persisted into the daytime, negatively impacting
their cognition, relationships, job performance, safety, and overall mental wellbeing (Turkoski,
2006). In addition, the National Sleep Foundation (2017) found that two thirds of surveyed
Americans had difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep at least one night a week. Due to the
reported prevalence of insomnia, it is important to consider the treatment methods employed to
combat both primary and comorbid

Example Of Nursing Physical Assessment
The patient is a 45 year old man who had GI surgery 4 days ago. He is NPO, has a nasogastric
tube, and IV fluids of D51/2saline at 100 mL/hr. The nursing physical assessment includes the
following: alert and oriented; fine crackles; capillary refill within normal limits; moving all
extremities, complaining of abdominal pain, muscle aches, and cottony mouth; dry mucous
membranes, bowel sounds hypoactive, last BM four days ago; skin turgor is poor; 200 mL of
dark green substance has drained from NG tube in last 3 hours. Voiding dark amber urine without
difficulty. Intake for last 24 hours is 2500mL. Output is 2000mL including urine and NG drainage.

the sodium is normal high and usually chloride follows sodium. Mag of 1.4 is low maybe because
of low calcium.
4.) The physician is planning to place a percutaneous central line to infuse TPN. Which site is
recommend and why?
A percutaneous central line is entered into the patient s subclavian vein. Because TPN solution is
concentrated it is better to have CVC access in the subclavian vein so the solution has less distance
to travel to its destination. This reduces the risk of the line clotting or damaging the vein.
4b.) What are the nurse s responsibilities for placement of the central line?
The nurse is responsible for positioning the patient and should assess the patient throughout to see
how well he is tolerating it. If the patient is on a heart monitor, the nurse should monitor vital signs
and heart rate as the catheter is being put in for any fluctuations. Afterword s, the nurse should
assess for complications or adverse reactions like pneumothorax. Make the patient comfortable and
listen to bilateral breath sounds. Obtain a stat XRAY to verify correct placement.
The assessment includes: Date and time of procedure, name of provider, site of insertion, type of
fluid infusing in each lumen, blood

Change Is Pain Research Paper
Change is pain refers to the complex connection between the anatomy of individuals brains and
human behavior that makes change almost impossible. According to Rock and Schwartz (2006),
psychology and neuroscience research have gained a new perspective on how different areas of the
brain determine human behavior. In particular, when individuals are exposed to situations that
include changing a specific behavior, there are two main reasons that make changing the behavior a
pain. One of these reasons relates to the nature of human memory and its relationship to
conscious attention (Rock Schwartz, 2006, p. 3). As per Rock and Schwartz (2006), routine
activities that take place in the working memory area of individuals brain require less effort and
energy from individuals to perform than new activities which takes place in the basal ganglia of
the brain; for example, driving to work versus taking a standardized test (e.g., GRE, CPA,... Show

Individuals will highly prefer driving to work than taking the standardized test. This results from
the great energy demand that a new activity requires, which is proportional to changing a behavior.
The second reason that makes change difficult is related to individuals basic brain functioning
(Rock Schwartz, 2006, p. 4). As per Rock and Schwartz (2006) stated that the orbital frontal
cortex of the human brain tends to perceive change as errors; consequently, this evokes
overwhelming emotions that requires a high demand of energy and leads individuals to behave
irrational by depriving the prefrontal brain region from energy. That is, when individuals face a
change, they tend to register it as an error which in turn originates an array of emotions that
disrupt their behavior. For instance, many individuals experience great fear of public speaking. If
someone who is not comfortable speaking in public is asked to give a speech, that person will
experience a variety of emotions that will interfere with his/her

The Mtbi Test, By Katharine Cook Briggs And Her Daughter...
Abstract The MTBI questionnaire, first published in 1943, was originally developed in the
United States by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers(The History of
the MTBI assessment, 2015). Through Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and his theories about
psychological types motivated Myers Briggs to create the MTBI test. Through interpretation the
MTBI test acts as a guideline in determining a subject s perception of the world and
psychological preferences. In this paper the author will explain their own results from the
MTBI test and go into greater detail whether or not it accurately depicts their personality. This
author will not only describe their personality type but show the strengths and weakness of this
particular personality. This author will also explain how employers look at the MTBI test as a
valuable tool in selecting great employees. Introduction Trait theory is defined as The
measurement of consistent patterns of habit in an individual s behavior, thoughts, and emotions.
The theory is based on the stability of traits over time, how they differ from other individuals,
and how they will influence human behavior (Trait Theory, 2015). Traits can be considered as
what makes a person who they are. Think of how a person would describe a person. For example,
this author describes their mother as loving, caring, and dependable, all these words would be
considered as a person s trait. Everybody in the world have a different

Abraham s Theory Of Behaviorism
Abraham Harold Maslow was born on April 1, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the first
born to his parents, Samuel and Rose Maslow. He was a lonely and unhappy Jewish boy who
spent most of his time in the library and among books as a means of comfort and refuge.
However, in 1925 at the age of 17 he enrolled at the City College of New York. In 1926, he
registered for evening classes at the Brooklyn Law School, then transferred to Cornell University in
Ithaca, New York in 1927. In 1928, he transferred to the University of Wisconsin and earned his
Bachelor, Maters and Doctorate within the years 1930 1934. Shortly after Maslow married his
longtime sweetheart and first cousin Bertha Goodman, he had discovered J.B. Watson and his
theories on behaviorism which sparked an interest in him. However, the birth of his two daughters
Anna and Ellen made him forget behaviorism. After working for 18 months at the Columbia
University he met with well known learning theorist Edward Thorndike who sparked an interest in
him that he decided to research on the relationship between dominance and sexuality in humans.
During the period 1937 1951, Abraham taught at Brooklyn College and there continued with his
research on human sexuality. He continued seeking to understand humans, more so, Max
Wertheimer and Ruth Benedick, who had great influence on him. These influential assisted him in
formulating an interest in self actualizing people. In 1951 Abraham moved to Brandeis University

Oedipus a Tragic Hero
Oedipus A Tragic Hero

Sophocles presented the world with Oedipus around 2500 years ago. Never the less, the story
remains among the most riveting of all time. Unfortunately, today when we hear the mention of the
name Oedipus we place negative connotations around it. Oedipus, after all, had an unnatural sexual
relationship with his own mother! In actuality, however, this relationship emerged entirely
innocently. Oedipus was not some misguided sexual pervert of an earlier time. He was, in fact, a
man that was driven by a very high internal moral standard. It was that internal moral standard that
ultimately entwined him in a sequence of events ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first part of the prophecy had thus been fulfilled despite Oedipus determination that it would
not.
It might be argued that Oedipus killing of his biological father was a result of inferior morals. In
this time period, however, such a killing was viewed as reasonable, what any reasonable human
being would have done under similar circumstances, and should not be used to disqualify Oedipus
under Sophloles definition of tragic hero (Ades 358). This was not a murder for gain and neither
was it a murder resulting from hatred. It was simply a socially acceptable means of settling a
dispute.
As was the case with the fulfillment of the first part of the prophecy, the fulfillment of the
second part of the prophecy didn t occur either because of inferior morals on Oedipus part.
Oedipus was welcomed into his birth country as a hero because he had killed the much feared
Sphinx, the same Sphinx that the people of the country believed had murdered their king,
Oedipus birth father. The Sphinx had been a killer himself. His favorite tactic was to prevent
travelers from the kingdom unless they could answer the riddle of what moved on four legs in the
morning, walked on two legs at noon and on three legs at night. Oedipus gave the correct answer of
man . Man, after all crawled when he was an infant, walked upright through most

Social Conflict Theory Paper
Social conflict theory sees social life as a race and centers on the allocation of resources, power,
and inequality. Social conflict theory is a Marxist based social theory which argues that
individuals and groups (social classes) within society interact based on conflict rather than
consensus. More powerful groups will tend to use their power in order to retain power and exploit
groups with less power (Butler, 1991; Payne, 2015). According to conflict theory, those with wealth
and power try to hold on to it by any means possible, chiefly by suppressing the poor and
powerless (Collins, 1990). Moreover, the theory revolves around concepts of social inequality in
the division of resources and focuses on the conflicts that exist between classes.

Driving Under Influence
Under Influence
According to cdc.gov teens are 17 times more likely to die in a car crash when they have a blood
alcohol concentration of .08% than then when they have not been drinking. Drinking and
driving is a problem amongst teens. One of the leading causes of death for teens is car accidents.
When teens drink they are at a bigger risk of getting in an accident. This has been a problem for
teens for many years and will continue to be a problem if teens are not aware of the negative
effects. Austin Hill,18, was driving drunk one night down a residential area when he hit a 15 year
old driver who was ejected from the car and was later pronounced dead. Austin was traveling 119
miles per hour when he hit the other young teen. He was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Everyone hates to see their parents fight and don t like being in the middle of it. Some teens feel
the need to drink because it s a way out of their sticky situations. Parents need to pay more
attention to their kids and they need to realize that their kids are watching them and following in
their footsteps. If a teen has a parent who is a drinker they have a greater chance of becoming a
drinker. Alcoholcauses people to be unaware of their surrounding and causes people to make bad
choices.
Lastly, drinking and driving is still a problem because of the negative effects it causes on teens.
If you get caught drinking and driving it s a major setback in your life whether it s because you
got pulled over by a police officer or got in a automobile accident. Drinking and driving can cost
you a big ticket and in more extreme cases even your life. There is no good reason to drink and
drive when your life is on the line because you re not just hurting yourself but the people who care
about you are hurt too.
Research has shown that the amount of teens who drink and drive now, have reduced by 54%
since 30 years ago. So teens in this day and age are more aware of the negative outcomes and
refrain from making bad decisions. Also, the laws are more strict about drinking than they were 30
years

It is indicated through a prophecy within the Harry Potter series that
Neither can live while the other survives. (Rowling, 2003: 841).
Harry is told, and deduces on his own, that if Lord Voldemort is ever to perish then he must also
die, giving the impression that without his own death Lord Voldemort can never be destroyed.
This information directly effects Harry s final decision to die without a fight at Lord Voldemort
s hand. It can be argued that due to the information that is provided by the prophecy, Harry s
option on whether or not to sacrifice himself where striped; and with the lack of options came a
lack of choice, and therefore a lack of willingness. This suggests that by Campbell s statement
Harry is not a hero, as his self sacrifice was not willing. Paula Soares Faria, PhD in English
Studies, states in her PhD thesis that
The difference between the villain and the hero can be seen here, not in the act of the sacrifice
itself, but in the purpose it serves. (Faria 2008:85; emphasis Faria)
When taking this into account it can be argued that it was not the Harry s choice or the actual
sacrifice itself that should be considered, but rather what this choice achieved; which was the
death of the section Voldemort s soul that resided within Harry, and by extension, Voldemort s
demise. This suggests that by Faria s statement Harry is a hero, as regardless of why he chose to
sacrifice

A Day At Merritt Reservoir
Have you ever smelled 4 day old moldy tube socks that have been soaked in lake water and left
under a bed? As a cabin keeper at Merritt Reservoir I had many bizarre encounters in a mere three
month summer break. Imagine walking into the crammed bait shop on a crisp summer morning.
You clock in for the day and gather all the supplies needed to get the job done. These supplies may
range from the typical cleaning utensils such as rags and window cleaner, extra toiletpaper and
towels, Febreeze, and rubber gloves for sticky situations. However, you also must be sure to
grab mousetraps, a bible, and a strange device that consists of a hook on a long wooden rod. You
will soon learn what these items are for, and how handy they can be throughout the day ahead.
The ongoing task of the day is to heave your massive cleaning cart up and down the slopping old
concrete walkways leading to each cabin. This monster is convenient since it carries all of your
items and you have them handy all at once, but can be a workout on a long day. When cleaning
cabins, you do not have a set amount of hours to look forward to finishing. Every day, you are
given a set amount of cabins, which can vary depending on how busy the lake is. You must
complete that set amount throughout the day, regardless of how fast or slow you work. The first
cabin of the day houses a family of 4 who must rarely rough it in the woods. They have requested
every day this week to be the first to get cleaned out in the

Lady Midnight Robedy Clare
This review of Lady Midnight will contain spoilers from Cassandra Clare s pervious series The
Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments.
I love Cassandra Clare s books, I really do and after I have been waiting for Lady Midnight for over

Lady Midnight was amazing. It is probably Clare s best work to date and that is saying something.
There was something about Lady Midnight that was different from her other books, I think it had to
do something about the writing. It seemed different, but I really enjoyed it.

Mark, Mark, Mark. Okay I loved Mark. He broke my heart it was. It has gone through so much and
being back with the ones that love him.
The one thing that I love about Clare s writing is that she can create so many different point of
views, but they all sound so different. It s done wonderfully in Lady Midnight and I cannot wait to
read more about these characters.
What I also love about Lady Midnight is that we find out things that we didn t know before about
the world it gives us an insight on laws, people, and events that are new to us.
That ending though I don t know how I am going to hold off to book 2, because seriously it was

Negative Effects Of Social Media
Everyone knows that teens love going on social networking sites such as Facebook, Snapchat,
Twitter, or Instagram, but what some don t know is that these sites can actually cause harm to
them. Social media has been around since 1997, about 20 years. Social media is intended to
help people stay caught up with their friends, and family, and also with what s going on in the
world today. Social media, however, is causing negative effects on today s teens, such as,
causing anxiety and depression, lowering self esteem, and also affecting their brain
development. Some people argue that social media academically benefits teens. The article Are
Social Networking sites good for our society explains how teens can academically benefit from
social media. The article says, After George Middle School in Portland, OR introduced a social
media program to engage students, grades went up by 50%, chronic absenteeism went down by
33%, and 20% of students school wide voluntarily completed extra credit assignments ( Are
Social...). It is true that teens who use academic social networking can benefit from social
media, if they use academic social networking sites. Most teens do not academically benefit from
social media because they do not use it for academic purposes. Statista shows the top social
networking sites for teens. According to statista, the top three teen social networking sites are
snapchat, 79%, Facebook, 76%, and Instagram, 73%. Although social networking sites can
benefit teens academically, most teens do not use these sites. Academic social networking is
not on any list of popular social media sites, in fact it is not even in the top 20. Teens will not
benefit academically from social media sites such as snapchat, instagram, and facebook. So when
teens don t actually use academic social media sites, they do not benefit academically from social
media. As a result, most teens do not academically benefit from social media. Extensive use of
social media in teens may lead to anxiety and depression. Nick Zagorski from the American
Psychiatric Association did a study on the risks of using social media. The analysis showed that
people who reported using the most platforms had more than three times the risk of

Essay about Moliere
Moliere is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and famous French writers ever. His comedic
plays capture the reader with a a perfect blend of intelligent and slap stick jokes. He mastered the
strange enterprise of amusing decent people (Guicharnaud, 2) with this simple philosophy:
Nothing is more effective(in making people laugh) then holding up the mirror to nature.
(Guicharnaud, 21) Jean Baptiste Poquelin was born in Paris on January 15, 1662. His father and
Mother where both interior decorators for the king, although his mother died when Jean Baptise
was ten years of age. He was sent to College de

produced French plays in the world. Despite defects in the plot and character development of
Moliere s plays, his works remain popular today because the basis of his comedy deals with human
nature, relationships, and hypocrisy. Tartuffewas Moliere s most performed and popular play.
When it was presented to the king in 1664 he liked it, but forbade Moliere to publicly produce it
under pressure from the church. For 5 years he pulled every string he could to get the play in
production. For reasons unknown, King Louis lifted the ban and Tartuffe became a instant hit. The
play consisted of 5 acts, in which surprisingly the main character did not even appear until the
third. Simply put, the plot had the man of a house hold in love with a stranger named Tartuffe he
had taken in to his care. The rest of the family saw through his facade, but the father insists that
Tartuffe is God sent. He finally realizes the truth when he witnesses
Tartuffe tempting his wife as he hid under the dining room table. Often
Tartuffe would often comment that the other people of the house where not following God, and
that he was his humble servant. Of course he turned

A Research On Human And Animal Studies
My dissertation research has provided successful evidence of non pharmacological approach to
personal precision medicine. Human and animal studies both in vitro and in vivo have provided
potential mechanotransduction pathways underlying bone regeneration and remodeling. The
relation of profiling gene expression between human bone marrowmesenchymal stem cells
(hBMSCs) and macrophages provides profound understandings of bone homeostasis starting in
bone marrow niches. The use of two photon confocal microscope has provided visual evidence on
mechanical modifications under the low intensity vibration measured by atomic force microscope.
The RNA interference technique of knocking down biogenes has confirmed the possibility of the
mechanotransduction pathway involving cellular interactions of physical structures inside the cell

Essay on History of Judaism
History of Judaism
Circa 2000 BCE, the G d of the ancient Israelites established a divine covenant with Abraham,
making him the patriarch of many nations. From his name, the term Abramic Religions is
derived; these are the three religions which trace their roots back to Abraham: Judaism,
Christianity and Islam. The book of Genesis describes the events surrounding the lives of the four
patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. Moses was the next leader. He led his people out of
captivity in Egypt, and received the Law from G d. After decades of wandering through wilderness,
Joshua led the tribes into the promised land, driving out the Canaanites through a series of military

Paul broke with this tradition and spread the religion to the Gentiles (non Jews). Many mini
revolts led to the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple in 70 CE. The Jewish Christians were
wiped out or scattered at this time. The movement started by Paul flourished and quickly evolved
into a separate religion. Jews were scattered throughout the known world. Their religion was no
longer centered in Jerusalem; Jews were prohibited from setting foot there. Judaism became
decentralized and stopped seeking converts. The local synagogue became the new center of Jewish

Henry David Thoreau Transcendentalism
Henry David Thoreau was an American transcendental writer in the 1800s. He was a well
educated man, having attended Harvard, and his writing served as an unconventional and
controversial recount of his life. He contributed works such as Walden, Civil Disobedience, and
several others to society and became one of the well known transcendental authors of his time.
His works were often met with criticism though, and his life seemed to take him in quite odd
directions, one of which landed him in jail. A story was written about the time he spent in jail and
some of the more significant moments in his life. In the play The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail by
Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the authors use examples of civil disobedience and the love...

After leaving the Public Schools of Concord, Henry actually starts his own school and focusses his
students attention on the world around them. He says to his brother, Break out of the classroom
prison. All we need is sky! The universe can be our schoolroom... (Qtd. in Lawrence and Lee). He
believes that traditional schooling is horrific and compares it to a prison. He believes the only
thing essential for learning is what has been given to them by the universe. Thoreau loves the
universe for its beauty and simplicity. This idea is quite similar to what Emerson discusses in his
story Nature, where he says, The greatest delight which the fields and woods minister, is the
suggestion of an occult relation between man and the vegetable. I am not alone and
unacknowledged. They nod to me, and I to them . Here he suggests that one can have a relationship
between nature and self, ultimately learning from and gaining happiness from nature. It s clear
Thoreau and his brother share the same beliefs as Emerson when starting their school, and the
authors made sure to include that quote to prove their influences. The authors showed the audience
Thoreau s teaching style and how it expressed his transcendental beliefs. In conclusion, The Night
Thoreau Spent in Jail is written to fit perfectly with the true

8 Thresholds In Big History
In the Big History, there are 8 thresholds; in Genesis 1 there are 7 days. The similarities between
the thresholds and days of creation have similarities literally and metaphorically. The Big Bang,
the emergence of matter forming planets and life; the first day, the creation of heaven and earth.
Just like the Big Bang, the first day created the ability for life to emerge. The stars light up, the
second day, Godcreated light. Although the light God created on the second day is metaphorically
goodness, He created light. Before light, earthwas a void, no form, engulfed by darkness. God brings
light. Then He brings day and night, but without stars and the sun; this is when the creation story
becomes separated from the Big History. God then created oceans and land, and then plants and
trees; God creates these things before the sun and stars.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What if the day and night is the separation between good and evil. History shows that humans
measure their days and nights based on the sun. If there was no sun, what kind of day and night
was it? Were these beginnings days and nights, God s time and not the human measured time?
God continues, He then creates the sun and the stars; the formation of new elements and a solar
system. God then created fish and birds, animals that live in the sea and animals that fly above
land; the creation story is thus relinked to Big History. God continues to create more organisms
and animals. Then on the sixth day, man and woman were created. In the creation story, there is
not days that show the emergence of agriculture or industrial ideas. God rests on the seventh day.
The seventh day can be seen as the future, but I like to think the seventh day is when collective
learning emerges and that there is will be always be an invisible eighth day. The eighth day would

Improving Patient Throughput
In the Emergency Department
Introduction
St. Vincent s Medical Center, a 501 bed facility located in Jacksonville, Florida, provides general
medical and surgical care to the North Florida Region. St. Vincent s admits over 26,000 patients
annually. The average occupancy rate is approximately 84% with the Emergency Department (ED)
peeking at 100% for approximately 4 12 hours daily. The hospital is struggling with availability of
bed space. This shortage of available beds creates a bottleneck in the ED on high census days.
Bottlenecks are created in the ED when there is a shortage of inpatient beds to place admitted ED
patients. Thus, patient flow, or throughput, is becoming more and more important.... Show more

Patients arriving in the ED are triaged by a nurse then placed in an ED room according to their
acuity. After being evaluated by a physician, the patient is either released to home or admitted.
When the decision is made for the patient to be admitted, a request for an inpatient bed is placed to
nursing administration who then assigns an available bed. If there is not an appropriate bed
available, the patient must remain in the ED bed. This effectively reduces the capacity of the ED
causing the department to either divert patients or patients will leave without being seen. Every
patient who is diverted or leaves without being seen is lost opportunity cost to the hospital.
Patient Volumes
Patient volumes vary greatly in the ED. There are, however, patterns noted in census fluctuations
according to the day of the week. High census days are historically early in the week, while lower
census usually occurs later in the week. On days when the census is high throughout the hospital,
there will be patients holding in the ED awaiting inpatient beds.
The following graph depicts the number of patients holding in the ED by month during the past
fiscal year.
This graph depicts the total ED volume by month for the past fiscal year.
Step 2: Develop Criteria
Feasibility Criteria: 1. Maintain Current Budget
The budget for this project will be based off of excess funding from the department. Due to the

Teaching Is An Effective Teacher And Create A Better...
The community in which I will be teaching believes that character education should be taught in
the schools. As I plan to teach first and second graders in the elementary schools, I will include
character education in my classroom by using four simple rules. Be honest, be caring, have
respect and listen. Students, parents, faculty members and I will be expected to follow all of
these simple rules upon entering my classroom. We will be honest and truthful in the things we
share. We will care about others feelings, and make it a priority to have my classroom as a
comfortable setting in which my students can learn. We will have respect for all of whom enter
into the walls of my classroom. We will listen to the instruction given and follow it to its entirety
and fullness. When we fail to maintain one of these rules or standards, we will simply try again.
As I plan to apply these rules in every aspect, my goal is to become an effective teacher and
create a better learning environment for my students. In essence, I will have a classroom in which
other students and teachers will look to. I know that one way that I can apply these standards is
by motivating my students in learning and in their lives. Students need to be involved and learning
as much as they can. From personal experience, I know that where I learned the most was in
settings in which were comfortable, there was respect. My teachers cared and were interested in the
activities I was involved in. They motivated me to

The Cause Of The Triassic Jurassic Extinction Is High...
Toxic Compounds Another theory that some proposed as the cause of the Triassic Jurassic mass
extinction is high levels of toxic compounds released from volcanic activity. Directly around
volcanic activity in the rift zone, there perhaps would have been high levels of Fluorine and
Chlorine, both of which could have directly poisoned organisms. These large ejections of Chlorine
and Fluorine could have led to ozone depletion and acid rain (McHone 2003). However, due to the
fact that high levels of either of these compounds would have caused extinction without prejudice,
the actual role that toxic compounds played during the Triassic Jurassic extinction is hard to
predict and study (Hautmann 2012). Sea level Changes There is another theory proposed that
posits that rapid sea level regression followed quickly by transgression caused the mass extinction,
at least in the marine realm. According to Schoene and Geux (2010), Оґ18O values from fossil
oysters suggest cool ocean temperatures immediately following the negative Оґ13C excursion
followed by a period of warming. As shown in figure 2, during a time spanning approximately
300,000 years there was a positive carbon isotope anomaly (corresponding with a decrease in sea
level along with cooling and glaciation) followed by a period of higher sea levels and a negative
carbon isotope anomaly. These findings are consistent with rapid sea level regression transgression
lasting only approximately 290,000 years, which can only be explained

Facilitating The Adoption Of Ifrs
Facilitating the Adoption of IFRS/IAS International financial reporting standards (IFRS) are the
attempt of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) to globally harmonize accounting

organizations draft financial reports that are comparable internationally (IFRS Foundation, 2015).

The Affects Of Climate Change On Marine Mammals
Effects of climate change on marine mammals Introduction Climate change is the change in
distribution of weather patterns usually after an extended period. Climate change is caused by
factors such as variation in solar radiation, biotic processes, volcanic eruptions and plate tectonic
oceans are known to be affected by climate. Marine mammals are very sensitive to changes in the
ocean environment. It is anticipated that climate change effects on marine mammals mediated
majorly by changes in prey distribution and abundance and the adaptable species may be able to
respond to this changes to some extent.
Observations made during the previous years on marine mammals show that certain species maybe
vulnerable than others this may include those with limited habitat such as narwhals. Reviews
provided by top organization, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicate that climate
change is likely to induce changes in temperatures and adjustment associated with ocean circulation,
sea level, and ice coverage.
Impact of climate change on marine mammals occur differently according to type of mammal and
its dwelling place either deep sea dweller or surface sea dwellers (Aguirre, Ostfeld, Daszak, 2012).

anthropogenic factors. Habitat distributed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Rise Of The Middle Class
For decades now, our political and economic policy have been constructed around one idea: that
if taxes on the rich go up, job creation will go down. This idea has been the backbone of
Republican trickle down Reagan economics and has been scarcely challenged by Democrats.
America s economy as well as the global economyas a whole are facing extreme income inequality
and this idea has only widened the gap. Our political system has been flooded with the money of
the rich through lobbyists or super PACs, who then are the ones receiving the taxcuts and are
garnering political favors by doing so, effectively moving us farther from a free and fair
democracy, but rather towards oligarchy. The middle class has been fading away due to stagnating...

Hanauer begins his argument by comparing the fallacy on hand to another fallacy we once
believed, which turned out to be dead wrong: For thousands of years people were sure that earth
was at the center of the universe. It s not and an astronomer who still believed it was, would do
some lousy astronomy. In doing this, Hanauer seeks to bring out the duh! response out of people
and relate it back to the argument at hand. The argument being that if a policy maker who
believed that the rich and businesses are job creators and therefore should not be taxed, would
make policy equally as lousy. Although he incites the emotional response in the reader he also
backs it up with facts and his experience as one of the plutocrats. He cites his experience as well
as,going into some basic economic theory: I have started or helped start, dozens of business and
initially hired lots of people. But if no one could have afforded to buy what we had to sell, my
businesses would have all failed and all those jobs would have evaporated. He uses this to pivot
to his next point, which is the main point of the argument: That s why I can say with confidence
that rich people don t create jobs, nor do businesses, large or small. He backs it up with his
theory, which is a basic economic principle of demand when broken down: What does lead to
more employment is a circle of life like feedback loop between customers and business. Not only is
it not the rich who create

Physical Appearance in Mary Shelly s Frankenstein Essay
Physical Appearance in Mary Shelly s Frankenstein In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein we are
introduced early in the story to one of the main characters Victor Frankenstein and subsequently to
his creation referred to as the monster. The monster comes to life after being constructed by Victor
using body parts from corpses. As gruesome as this sounds initially we are soon caught up in the
tale of the living monster. Victor the creator becomes immediately remorseful of his decision to
bring the monstrous creation to life and abandons the borne creature. Victor describes his emotions
and physical description of his creation as follows: How can I describe my emotions at this

feelings that those who look different are bad, evil or incapable of normal feelings. That
somehow because one may look different from the rest of us there must be something
emotionally as well as physically wrong with them. As I struggled to grab on to a thesis for this
essay, it finally occurred to me that my empathy for the monster really was fundamental in my
reading of this text. In further examining why I would feel this way, and by comments made in
class on this subject, I soon realized that I had a parallel to the monster s experience right in
front of me literally. My brother, borne with a severe cleft pallet and lip he has endured twenty
three years of surgeries and therapies to repair the structure of his face. The first surgeries
focused primarily on function of his basic needs: eating, breathing, speaking etc. without
emphasis on how he looked. However, these past few years, as he approached his early twenties,
the surgeries have focused primarily on his appearance. Like the monster, he experiences many
prejudices based on his appearance. He is frequently looked upon suspiciously in stores while
shopping and has been approached by security on occasion. Strangers tend to shy away from him
and often look away and do not respond if he directly address them. He

The Importance Of Local Government
What is local government and how does something much smaller than the bigger picture have an
more immense impact on individual s lives? Local government is the administration, of a district,
state, or county, in which the citizen elects the officials corresponding to their particular area. Local
government is essential throughout America. It entitles people the right to have a say in what is
going on in their community, on a governmental stance. Local government, moreover, establishes
and enforce local laws. Local government, furthermore, is responsible for establishing and
delivering a range of quality to their community. Local government sets the direction in which they
want to see their region going in. Local government uses a long term plan in which they set:
financial plans, council plans, municipal strategic statement, and other strategic tactics. With the
use of the tactics, they determine how they want their region to progress. People should be
concerned about their local government because it allows them to have a say in what happens in
their community, and it makes local laws which directly affect the people in their region.
As previously stated, local government entitles people the right to have a say in their local
government. How would you feel if you had no say in what is happening in your community? Local
government gives individuals the capability to say what should happen in their community. It gives
people that fail safe that they have the ability to

Analysis Of Bram Stoker s Dracula
Bram Stoker s Dracula was written in 1897. This was a time that the Victorian era and its values
were changing and meeting their ends. The male dominant world was evolving to an equal
opportunity society. This meant women were no longer oppressed and limited socially,
educationally, economically, or even sexually. The end of the Victorian era also called for growth
in technology and medicines. Old ideas were diminishing while new ideas of the world were
flourishing. Whether it be the pro femininity, new outlooks, or advances in technological and
medicinal aspects, we can find these concepts portrayed in various ways throughout Dracula. At the
time Stoker wrote the story, they were new ideas and the first time the certain issues were... Show

We see this concept covered in various areas of the story. In Dr. Seward s diary in chapter XI, he
writes, ...the flowers were of medicinal value...What does it all mean? I am beginning to
wonder if my long habit of life among the insane is beginning to tell upon my own brain (Stoker
124). In this entry we have witnessed Dr. Seward continue his ongoing battle to save Lucy from
her sickness. During this time he has been unable to derive a proper diagnosis and normal
treatment has had no positive effects. He has resorted to old superstitions of leaving garlic
flowers and crucifixes in her presence to ward off any evil. We are also introduced to Van
Helsing, another doctor, who for Lucys health is repeatedly performing blood transfusions. Yet
this is another failing medical practice. The idea that modern science cannot stop this monster and
instead he can only be defeated by superstitions and legends, is almost a mock of the Victorian
advancements. This is still a relevant topic today. Medical technology and practice is something
we as humans are forever going to need. Studying a story in the turning point of that growth gives
us knowledge of what beliefs and roots medicine started from. It seems that the story deems
medical science to be useless, but we know that is not true. Another relation to modern day is the
introduction of new faith the story represents. In the story we see signs of

I have always felt a very strong connection to the bible itself and its teachings, and Israel is an
imperative part of the book. While certain decisions that have been made in that area are
questionable, it is one sided to boycott the entire country when a great deal of people have done
nothing wrong and are attempting to make a living for themselves. It is evident that I have
always been very interested in the financials of our church and recently they have bothered me.
It seems we have been frivolously spending money lately, and while it may appear like small
amounts at the time, it all adds up. When financials are as tight as they currently are we must
first worry about keeping the lights on. This was especially evident to me when we decided to
spend money for Pride in the Park combined with the add we purchased. Finally, the recent
decision to have our Saturday worship on the same day as an already existing church activity has
really rubbed me the wrong way. For nearly a decade members of our church have made the
evening meal at Churches United For the Homeless, and I feel it was a poor decision to have our
bimonthly Saturday worships overlap directly with that ministry. It not only takes volunteers away

Essay on Do Not Call List
Abstract
For years companies from all areas of commerce were allowed to call anyone they thought might
be a candidate for their product without repercussions. A court order on Feb, 17th 2004 upheld an
order to allow the general public to be listed on a do not call list. Businesses will now be held
responsible if they contact someone on this list without their permission. The question is did the
court make the right decision.
We may not agree on much in this country, but one thing most of us can agree on is that
telemarketing is a big nuisance. In fact one survey done by Walker Research in 1990 showed that
70 percent of Americans considered telemarketing an invasion of their privacy. In... Show more

Yet, forcing someone to listen to me speak my mind does impose a cost. This is the heart of the
matter, which many people fail to understand: The right of free speech does not include the right
to an audience. You have to earn an audience, which must be given of their own will. If not then
the company is violating one of the most basic rights we have and that is the right to simply be left
alone. As stated by the 10th U.s. Circuit Court of Appealsin The Associated Press (Feb. 14, 2004)
quot;Just as a consumer can avoid door to door peddlers by placing a No Solicitation sign in his or
her front yard, the do not call registry lets consumers avoid unwanted sales pitches that invade the
home via telephone quot;.
Telemarketing businesses disagree with this point of view of course. They view their work as
simply another way and means of advertising. The Direct Marketing Association fought the ruling
in Sept. of 2003 and won with the court stating that the original law was imposing on their right to
freedom of speech. They stated that the phone lines were owned by the phone companies and not
the consumer which for the most part was true. Companies such as SBC and AT amp;T had built
most of them yet the phones at the ends of these lines are owned by the general consumer. This is
where the customer s argument comes back into the light. With the phone being theirs they strongly
believed that they should have the right stop inbound

Sociological Concepts In Sicko
Sicko, a documentary film by Michael Moore, describes the medical issue in which many people
who live in the United States have to suffer their sickness due to the high treatment costs. Many
people in the U.S. do not have health insurance because they can afford for that. However, not only
people that do not have healthinsurance but also the people who have health insurance struggle for

Rescission is an impressive term to describe the health care problem in the U.S. Many insurance
companies tend to looking for the reasons to cancel coverage after a person gets sick. The
difficulty is that people are overwhelmed with the long list of question and information before
registration or treatment. That small mistakes or lack information is hard to avoid will be the
reason for rescission. The film shows that insurance company have thousands of reasons to refuse
to provide coverage. The medical issues can be explained by the features of capitalism in the
United States. Capitalism is considered as an economic system based on production for profit.
While patients in Canada, England, and France receive free health care and many free services
from the government, people living in the United States has to pay a lot money for those services
from their pockets.
While doctors in England get bonus when making their patients live a healthy lifestyle to prevent

accomplished through the demand pull approach which presents students with a vivid, possibly
virtual, learning construct. This self regulated learning process is based on the student s desire to
learn about a particular topic or be a part of a certain community, and is usually informal. The
demand pull mode is resource oriented and current internet sources. Web 2.0 is rapidly growing
and evolving (Brown Adler, 2008).
The benefits and challenges that may be associated with self regulated learning are (1).Staying
Engaged, the internet along with the various applications help keeps students engaged on a
particular topic of interest. These social media technology tools assist with the learning process
based on the familiarity of the tools that are used. (2)Self monitoring is a strategy that teaches

The Life Of Frederick Douglas By Harriet Jacob
Menal ElmalikiBlessings and Woe The glaring, almost scorching sun beats down on the backs
of the enslaved. The sweat rolls down, past their scared backs and down to the heel of their tired
aching feet. The plantations roar of devastation, but not of its crops but the people that tend to
it. From dusk they rise and to the rake of night they rest, laden with what little sleep, and what
little time they have to dream. Their aching scars tell tales far beyond, their eyes seen what no
other, and their ears hear like no other; the slaves, encumbered as they are living history.
Freedom is all but a dream, and those who dare to even dream or think are those who are not
blind and know that freedom is their right. Slavery has weakened the back and soul of Frederick
Douglas but surely not his mind and not even slavery can destroy the paramountcy of
motherhood and community as Harriet Jacob s simply shown. In after all, slavery has made
Frederick a man and Harriet, a mother. In the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, An
American Slave, by Frederick Douglass, it details a momentous passage of conquering
education and reconquering manhood; gaining glory even though he was left to his own
devices from an early age dissimilar to Harriet Jacobs in the Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.
Family values are destroyed, can we even say some existed; what it means to be a man, a husband,
and a mother is a trial all on its own. Slavery is a troubling situation; it can

The Expansion Of The Western Expansion During The...
The narrative of America has always been associated with Western Expansion using bounds and
leaps starting from the East Coast until the Pacific. The acquisition of Alaska and Hawaii, though
not included in the historical literature, signified the expansion of Americans westward maintaining
the ideology of the Manifest Destiny. The Western expansion during the nineteenth century was
aided by various factors such as purchases, treaties, and wars with the Native Americans. This essay
develops the chronological events associated with the Western expansion that took place between
1860 and 1890.
According to Kinnahan (407), the 19th century in America was marked by the continuous and
tremendous expansion of agriculture and industry as well as settlement throughout the continent.
The country s population more than doubled by the 1890 census. Most of the financial progress
was concentrated in the plains, Midwest, and Northwest states. Particularly, the northwest became
the industrial periphery of the nation controlling more than 85 percent of the United States
processing and manufacturing of raw materials in the West and Midwest. The South thrived as an
agricultural state with minimal industrial activities.
For many years prior to the Civil War, the Northern states were forced to conform to the wayward
policies instituted by the South. The South held most of the Senate but as soon as their power
began to dwindle, their unscrupulous laws were reformed. Some of the policies that

This article touches on the effects of negative tweets during the 2011 2012 primary elections. The
author assumes that through research she would discover that candidates that had fewer votes
would be more inclined to take part in negative tweeting behaviors in regards to their fellow
competitors during the election. The tweets that would be posted would be negative towards the
frontrunner s charter versus stances on issues if candidates felt the same way on an issue. These
assumptions raised many questions to researchas well. Moody, Cohen, and Fournon (2013) raised
the first question of What types of messages did candidates disseminate utilizing tweets during the
2011 12 Presidential Primaries (p. 3). The next question brought up by Moody, Cohen, and Fournon
(2013) was, Were runner up candidates more likely than front runners to include a negative tone in
their tweets (p. 3). Then the third question stated by Moody, Cohen and Fournon (2013) was, Were
runner up candidates more likely than front runners to attack their opponents in their tweets (p. 3)
Finally, the fourth and final question raised by Moody, Cohen, and Fournon (2013) stated, What
interactive units did politicians use within their tweets. To what type of content did they link? What
was the tone of candidate hashtags (p. 3).

The similarities between World War 2 (The Holocaust) and post to modern pop media through
the state of the societal government, the culture and lifestyles of the people and the

itself. At some point in time every event in history will be repeated, evolved, but repeated. Elie
Wiesel was a child when the Holocaust started, he never expected his life to turn out the way it
did, but the Holocaust happened. It tore him from his roots, his destiny, his life and planted him
in a grave of bones. The Holocaust is real. The terrors of Hitler reached every corner of the earth,
and it will again. The distinct similarities between The Holocaust and modern culture tell us that.
Whether it is pleasant or not, the constant reminder of the malice of Hitler are important so we
can hopefully lead our children into a future of love. A place without the cruel pain of red

Writing And Writing Of Writing
Everyone says that writing of Communication has become a clichГ©. It is a clichГ©, however
that is true. Personally, I do not like writing, but over time it has become a big part of me that I
appreciate. Writing for me started in elementary school. I started with writing my ABCs and my
name to perfection, until I did not make any mistakes. Over my years of writingI have enhanced my
expressiveness, originality, and creativity. Growing up, I loved writing poems. My love for poems
developed from listening and loving nursery rhymes such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mary Had
A Little Lamb, Ring around the Rosie, and many others. When I was five years old, I wrote and
presented a poem of mine in my church auditorium with members present. I had anger problems
growing up, and my psychologist taught me to let out my anger in different forms of writing. One
thing I have realized is that I write good personal papers whenever I am either upset at someone or
a situation. I have minimal experiences in writing academic papers. I use the writing process I was
taught in high school which was: Invention, Draft and Revision, then Proof Reading and Editing. I
also know how to incorporate words into sentences, and utilize sentences to form paragraphs. What
are my assumptions about writing? Concerning a personal writing, nothing. Good, bad, awful,
mediocre; writing is about self expression. If it makes sense to the author, then nothing else matters.
I mean, it is a personal writing; the

Essay On The Desert Storm
The Desert Storm or as some know, the Persian Gulf War, took place in August of 1990. Saddam
Hussein, the leader of Iraq was the main person involved in the start of the war. The war included
many allied countries, they included a big part of the Middle East, Canada, United States and the
United Kingdom and many more. After lasting 100 hours the war ended on February 28th, 1991
(The Gulf War,1991)
The Desert Storm, which is also known as the Persian Gulf War and known as Operation Desert
Storm, started at the end of the Cold War in 1990. The Desert Storm happened because Saddam
Hussein, who was the leader of Iraq ordered invasion and occupation of the neighboring country
of Kuwait, in August of 1990. Hussein was told by the United Nations Security Council to
withdraw from Kuwait by the middle of January 1991, and Hussein disregarded their demands.
Because he refused to withdraw the Persian Gulf War was triggered (Feinstein, 39). The Iraqi
takeover posed a threat to Saudi Arabia, which was another oil supplying country for the United
States. If Saudi Arabia took over by Hussein than he would have controlled one fifth of the world
s oil supply. The Middle East had their eyes on the White House, waiting for a response from
President George H. W. Bush. When he found out his response was, This will not stand, meaning
that Hussein taking over the Middle East s oil would not be tolerable (Operation Desert Storm).
In August of 1990, the dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, invaded

The ability of humans to manipulate DNA is a mixed blessing Genetically modified organisms are made moving the DNA from one species to another. DNA contains genes which code for proteins. For plants and bacteria; restriction enzymes are used to cut a DNA segment from a desired gene source and a bacterium plasmid. They are joined using ligase enzymes and inserted into the plant chromosome or host bacterium. For animals the recombinant DNA is injected into an embryo and transferred to a recipient mother. The organisms will now express a new protein. Proteins determine form and metabolism. Genetic engineering changes the natural DNA of living things, cutting across species boundaries. Being featured in numerous types of popular culture, such as well known songs, chronic sleeplessness is unique in its near mainstream relevance (Lynsky, 2008). Insomniais defined as chronic complaints of unsatisfactory sleep, despite having an adequate opportunity to sleep (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). According to the DSM, The diagnosis of insomnia disorder is given whether it occurs as an independent condition or is comorbid with another mental disorder (e.g., major depressive disorder), medical condition (e.g., pain), or another sleep disorder(e.g., a breathing related sleep disorder).... • 5. Change Is Pain Research Paper Change is pain refers to the complex connection between the anatomy of individuals brains and human behavior that makes change almost impossible. According to Rock and Schwartz (2006), psychology and neuroscience research have gained a new perspective on how different areas of the brain determine human behavior. In particular, when individuals are exposed to situations that include changing a specific behavior, there are two main reasons that make changing the behavior a pain. One of these reasons relates to the nature of human memory and its relationship to conscious attention (Rock Schwartz, 2006, p. 3). As per Rock and Schwartz (2006), routine activities that take place in the working memory area of individuals brain require less effort and energy from individuals to perform than new activities which takes place in the basal ganglia of the brain; for example, driving to work versus taking a standardized test (e.g., GRE, CPA,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Individuals will highly prefer driving to work than taking the standardized test. This results from the great energy demand that a new activity requires, which is proportional to changing a behavior. The second reason that makes change difficult is related to individuals basic brain functioning (Rock Schwartz, 2006, p. 4). As per Rock and Schwartz (2006) stated that the orbital frontal cortex of the human brain tends to perceive change as errors; consequently, this evokes overwhelming emotions that requires a high demand of energy and leads individuals to behave irrational by depriving the prefrontal brain region from energy. That is, when individuals face a change, they tend to register it as an error which in turn originates an array of emotions that disrupt their behavior. Abstract The MTBI questionnaire, first published in 1943, was originally developed in the United States by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers(The History of the MTBI assessment, 2015). Through Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and his theories about psychological types motivated Myers Briggs to create the MTBI test. Through interpretation the MTBI test acts as a guideline in determining a subject s perception of the world and psychological preferences. In this paper the author will explain their own results from the MTBI test and go into greater detail whether or not it accurately depicts their personality. This author will not only describe their personality type but show the strengths and weakness of this particular personality. This author will also explain how employers look at the MTBI test as a valuable tool in selecting great employees. Introduction Trait theory is defined as The measurement of consistent patterns of habit in an individual s behavior, thoughts, and emotions. The theory is based on the stability of traits over time, how they differ from other individuals, and how they will influence human behavior (Trait Theory, 2015). Traits can be considered as what makes a person who they are. Think of how a person would describe a person. He was a lonely and unhappy Jewish boy who spent most of his time in the library and among books as a means of comfort and refuge. However, in 1925 at the age of 17 he enrolled at the City College of New York. In 1926, he registered for evening classes at the Brooklyn Law School, then transferred to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1927. In 1928, he transferred to the University of Wisconsin and earned his Bachelor, Maters and Doctorate within the years 1930 1934. Shortly after Maslow married his longtime sweetheart and first cousin Bertha Goodman, he had discovered J.B. Watson and his theories on behaviorism which sparked an interest in him. However, the birth of his two daughters Anna and Ellen made him forget behaviorism. After working for 18 months at the Columbia University he met with well known learning theorist Edward Thorndike who sparked an interest in him that he decided to research on the relationship between dominance and sexuality in humans. During the period 1937 1951, Abraham taught at Brooklyn College and there continued with his research on human sexuality. Never the less, the story remains among the most riveting of all time. Unfortunately, today when we hear the mention of the name Oedipus we place negative connotations around it. Oedipus, after all, had an unnatural sexual relationship with his own mother! In actuality, however, this relationship emerged entirely innocently. Oedipus was not some misguided sexual pervert of an earlier time. He was, in fact, a man that was driven by a very high internal moral standard. The first part of the prophecy had thus been fulfilled despite Oedipus determination that it would not. It might be argued that Oedipus killing of his biological father was a result of inferior morals. In this time period, however, such a killing was viewed as reasonable, what any reasonable human being would have done under similar circumstances, and should not be used to disqualify Oedipus under Sophloles definition of tragic hero (Ades 358). This was not a murder for gain and neither was it a murder resulting from hatred. It was simply a socially acceptable means of settling a dispute. As was the case with the fulfillment of the first part of the prophecy, the fulfillment of the second part of the prophecy didn t occur either because of inferior morals on Oedipus part. Oedipus was welcomed into his birth country as a hero because he had killed the much feared Sphinx, the same Sphinx that the people of the country believed had murdered their king, Oedipus birth father. The Sphinx had been a killer himself. His favorite tactic was to prevent travelers from the kingdom unless they could answer the riddle of what moved on four legs in the morning, walked on two legs at noon and on three legs at night. Social conflict theory is a Marxist based social theory which argues that individuals and groups (social classes) within society interact based on conflict rather than consensus. More powerful groups will tend to use their power in order to retain power and exploit groups with less power (Butler, 1991; Payne, 2015). According to conflict theory, those with wealth and power try to hold on to it by any means possible, chiefly by suppressing the poor and powerless (Collins, 1990). This information directly effects Harry s final decision to die without a fight at Lord Voldemort s hand. It can be argued that due to the information that is provided by the prophecy, Harry s option on whether or not to sacrifice himself where striped; and with the lack of options came a lack of choice, and therefore a lack of willingness. • 21. Henry David Thoreau Transcendentalism Henry David Thoreau was an American transcendental writer in the 1800s. He was a well educated man, having attended Harvard, and his writing served as an unconventional and controversial recount of his life. He contributed works such as Walden, Civil Disobedience, and several others to society and became one of the well known transcendental authors of his time. His works were often met with criticism though, and his life seemed to take him in quite odd directions, one of which landed him in jail. A story was written about the time he spent in jail and some of the more significant moments in his life. In the play The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the authors use examples of civil disobedience and the love... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After leaving the Public Schools of Concord, Henry actually starts his own school and focusses his students attention on the world around them. He says to his brother, Break out of the classroom prison. All we need is sky! The universe can be our schoolroom... (Qtd. in Lawrence and Lee). He believes that traditional schooling is horrific and compares it to a prison. He believes the only thing essential for learning is what has been given to them by the universe. Thoreau loves the universe for its beauty and simplicity. This idea is quite similar to what Emerson discusses in his story Nature, where he says, The greatest delight which the fields and woods minister, is the suggestion of an occult relation between man and the vegetable. I am not alone and unacknowledged. They nod to me, and I to them . Here he suggests that one can have a relationship between nature and self, ultimately learning from and gaining happiness from nature. It s clear Thoreau and his brother share the same beliefs as Emerson when starting their school, and the authors made sure to include that quote to prove their influences. The authors showed the audience Thoreau s teaching style and how it expressed his transcendental beliefs. In conclusion, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail is written to fit perfectly with the true ... The similarities between the thresholds and days of creation have similarities literally and metaphorically. The Big Bang, the emergence of matter forming planets and life; the first day, the creation of heaven and earth. Just like the Big Bang, the first day created the ability for life to emerge. The stars light up, the second day, Godcreated light. Although the light God created on the second day is metaphorically goodness, He created light. Before light, earthwas a void, no form, engulfed by darkness. God brings light. Then He brings day and night, but without stars and the sun; this is when the creation story becomes separated from the Big History. God then created oceans and land, and then plants and trees; God creates these things before the sun and stars.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What if the day and night is the separation between good and evil. History shows that humans measure their days and nights based on the sun. If there was no sun, what kind of day and night was it? Were these beginnings days and nights, God s time and not the human measured time? God continues, He then creates the sun and the stars; the formation of new elements and a solar system. God then created fish and birds, animals that live in the sea and animals that fly above land; the creation story is thus relinked to Big History. God continues to create more organisms and animals. Then on the sixth day, man and woman were created. In the creation story, there is not days that show the emergence of agriculture or industrial ideas. God rests on the seventh day. The seventh day can be seen as the future, but I like to think the seventh day is when collective learning emerges and that there is will be always be an invisible eighth day. • 23. Improving Patient Throughput in the Emergency Department... Improving Patient Throughput In the Emergency Department Introduction St. Vincent s Medical Center, a 501 bed facility located in Jacksonville, Florida, provides general medical and surgical care to the North Florida Region. St. Vincent s admits over 26,000 patients annually. The average occupancy rate is approximately 84% with the Emergency Department (ED) peeking at 100% for approximately 4 12 hours daily. The hospital is struggling with availability of bed space. This shortage of available beds creates a bottleneck in the ED on high census days. Bottlenecks are created in the ED when there is a shortage of inpatient beds to place admitted ED patients. Thus, patient flow, or throughput, is becoming more and more important.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patients arriving in the ED are triaged by a nurse then placed in an ED room according to their acuity. After being evaluated by a physician, the patient is either released to home or admitted. When the decision is made for the patient to be admitted, a request for an inpatient bed is placed to nursing administration who then assigns an available bed. If there is not an appropriate bed available, the patient must remain in the ED bed. This effectively reduces the capacity of the ED causing the department to either divert patients or patients will leave without being seen. Every patient who is diverted or leaves without being seen is lost opportunity cost to the hospital. Patient Volumes Patient volumes vary greatly in the ED. There are, however, patterns noted in census fluctuations according to the day of the week. High census days are historically early in the week, while lower census usually occurs later in the week. On days when the census is high throughout the hospital, there will be patients holding in the ED awaiting inpatient beds. The following graph depicts the number of patients holding in the ED by month during the past fiscal year. This graph depicts the total ED volume by month for the past fiscal year. As I plan to teach first and second graders in the elementary schools, I will include character education in my classroom by using four simple rules. Be honest, be caring, have respect and listen. Students, parents, faculty members and I will be expected to follow all of these simple rules upon entering my classroom. We will be honest and truthful in the things we share. We will care about others feelings, and make it a priority to have my classroom as a comfortable setting in which my students can learn. We will have respect for all of whom enter into the walls of my classroom. We will listen to the instruction given and follow it to its entirety and fullness. When we fail to maintain one of these rules or standards, we will simply try again. As I plan to apply these rules in every aspect, my goal is to become an effective teacher and create a better learning environment for my students. In essence, I will have a classroom in which other students and teachers will look to. I know that one way that I can apply these standards is by motivating my students in learning and in their lives. Students need to be involved and learning as much as they can. From personal experience, I know that where I learned the most was in settings in which were comfortable, there was respect. My teachers cared and were interested in the activities I was involved in. • 26. The Cause Of The Triassic Jurassic Extinction Is High... Toxic Compounds Another theory that some proposed as the cause of the Triassic Jurassic mass extinction is high levels of toxic compounds released from volcanic activity. Directly around volcanic activity in the rift zone, there perhaps would have been high levels of Fluorine and Chlorine, both of which could have directly poisoned organisms. These large ejections of Chlorine and Fluorine could have led to ozone depletion and acid rain (McHone 2003). However, due to the fact that high levels of either of these compounds would have caused extinction without prejudice, the actual role that toxic compounds played during the Triassic Jurassic extinction is hard to predict and study (Hautmann 2012). Sea level Changes There is another theory proposed that posits that rapid sea level regression followed quickly by transgression caused the mass extinction, at least in the marine realm. According to Schoene and Geux (2010), Оґ18O values from fossil oysters suggest cool ocean temperatures immediately following the negative Оґ13C excursion followed by a period of warming. As shown in figure 2, during a time spanning approximately 300,000 years there was a positive carbon isotope anomaly (corresponding with a decrease in sea level along with cooling and glaciation) followed by a period of higher sea levels and a negative carbon isotope anomaly. These findings are consistent with rapid sea level regression transgression lasting only approximately 290,000 years, which can only be explained ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Affects Of Climate Change On Marine Mammals Effects of climate change on marine mammals Introduction Climate change is the change in distribution of weather patterns usually after an extended period. Climate change is caused by factors such as variation in solar radiation, biotic processes, volcanic eruptions and plate tectonic oceans are known to be affected by climate. Marine mammals are very sensitive to changes in the ocean environment. It is anticipated that climate change effects on marine mammals mediated majorly by changes in prey distribution and abundance and the adaptable species may be able to respond to this changes to some extent. Observations made during the previous years on marine mammals show that certain species maybe vulnerable than others this may include those with limited habitat such as narwhals. Reviews provided by top organization, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicate that climate change is likely to induce changes in temperatures and adjustment associated with ocean circulation, sea level, and ice coverage. Impact of climate change on marine mammals occur differently according to type of mammal and its dwelling place either deep sea dweller or surface sea dwellers (Aguirre, Ostfeld, Daszak, 2012). In doing this, Hanauer seeks to bring out the duh! response out of people and relate it back to the argument at hand. The argument being that if a policy maker who believed that the rich and businesses are job creators and therefore should not be taxed, would make policy equally as lousy. The end of the Victorian era also called for growth in technology and medicines. Old ideas were diminishing while new ideas of the world were flourishing. In this entry we have witnessed Dr. Seward continue his ongoing battle to save Lucy from her sickness. During this time he has been unable to derive a proper diagnosis and normal treatment has had no positive effects. He has resorted to old superstitions of leaving garlic flowers and crucifixes in her presence to ward off any evil. The idea that modern science cannot stop this monster and instead he can only be defeated by superstitions and legends, is almost a mock of the Victorian advancements. This is still a relevant topic today. Medical technology and practice is something we as humans are forever going to need. Studying a story in the turning point of that growth gives us knowledge of what beliefs and roots medicine started from. It seems that the story deems medical science to be useless, but we know that is not true. Another relation to modern day is the introduction of new faith the story represents. • 43. The Life Of Frederick Douglas By Harriet Jacob Menal ElmalikiBlessings and Woe The glaring, almost scorching sun beats down on the backs of the enslaved. The sweat rolls down, past their scared backs and down to the heel of their tired aching feet. The plantations roar of devastation, but not of its crops but the people that tend to it. From dusk they rise and to the rake of night they rest, laden with what little sleep, and what little time they have to dream. Their aching scars tell tales far beyond, their eyes seen what no other, and their ears hear like no other; the slaves, encumbered as they are living history. Freedom is all but a dream, and those who dare to even dream or think are those who are not blind and know that freedom is their right. Slavery has weakened the back and soul of Frederick Douglas but surely not his mind and not even slavery can destroy the paramountcy of motherhood and community as Harriet Jacob s simply shown. In after all, slavery has made Frederick a man and Harriet, a mother. In the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, by Frederick Douglass, it details a momentous passage of conquering education and reconquering manhood; gaining glory even though he was left to his own devices from an early age dissimilar to Harriet Jacobs in the Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Family values are destroyed, can we even say some existed; what it means to be a man, a husband, and a mother is a trial all on its own. Slavery is a troubling situation; it can ... The narrative of America has always been associated with Western Expansion using bounds and leaps starting from the East Coast until the Pacific. The acquisition of Alaska and Hawaii, though not included in the historical literature, signified the expansion of Americans westward maintaining the ideology of the Manifest Destiny. The Western expansion during the nineteenth century was aided by various factors such as purchases, treaties, and wars with the Native Americans. This essay develops the chronological events associated with the Western expansion that took place between 1860 and 1890. According to Kinnahan (407), the 19th century in America was marked by the continuous and tremendous expansion of agriculture and industry as well as settlement throughout the continent. The country s population more than doubled by the 1890 census. Most of the financial progress was concentrated in the plains, Midwest, and Northwest states. Particularly, the northwest became the industrial periphery of the nation controlling more than 85 percent of the United States processing and manufacturing of raw materials in the West and Midwest. The South thrived as an agricultural state with minimal industrial activities. For many years prior to the Civil War, the Northern states were forced to conform to the wayward policies instituted by the South. The South held most of the Senate but as soon as their power began to dwindle, their unscrupulous laws were reformed. Some of the policies that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Writing And Writing Of Writing Everyone says that writing of Communication has become a clichГ©. It is a clichГ©, however that is true. Personally, I do not like writing, but over time it has become a big part of me that I appreciate. Writing for me started in elementary school. I started with writing my ABCs and my name to perfection, until I did not make any mistakes. Over my years of writingI have enhanced my expressiveness, originality, and creativity. Growing up, I loved writing poems. My love for poems developed from listening and loving nursery rhymes such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Mary Had A Little Lamb, Ring around the Rosie, and many others. When I was five years old, I wrote and presented a poem of mine in my church auditorium with members present. I had anger problems growing up, and my psychologist taught me to let out my anger in different forms of writing. One thing I have realized is that I write good personal papers whenever I am either upset at someone or a situation. I have minimal experiences in writing academic papers. I use the writing process I was taught in high school which was: Invention, Draft and Revision, then Proof Reading and Editing. I also know how to incorporate words into sentences, and utilize sentences to form paragraphs. What are my assumptions about writing? Concerning a personal writing, nothing. Good, bad, awful, mediocre; writing is about self expression. If it makes sense to the author, then nothing else matters. I mean, it is a personal writing; the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After lasting 100 hours the war ended on February 28th, 1991 (The Gulf War,1991) The Desert Storm, which is also known as the Persian Gulf War and known as Operation Desert Storm, started at the end of the Cold War in 1990. The Desert Storm happened because Saddam Hussein, who was the leader of Iraq ordered invasion and occupation of the neighboring country of Kuwait, in August of 1990. Hussein was told by the United Nations Security Council to withdraw from Kuwait by the middle of January 1991, and Hussein disregarded their demands. Because he refused to withdraw the Persian Gulf War was triggered (Feinstein, 39). The Iraqi takeover posed a threat to Saudi Arabia, which was another oil supplying country for the United States. If Saudi Arabia took over by Hussein than he would have controlled one fifth of the world s oil supply. The Middle East had their eyes on the White House, waiting for a response from President George H. W. Bush. When he found out his response was, This will not stand, meaning that Hussein taking over the Middle East s oil would not be tolerable (Operation Desert Storm).
