Catherine Kitty Genovese was murdered and raped on the street in Kew Gardens,
New York. The incident did not initially receive much attention until Martin
Gansberg s infamous article, Thirty Eight Who Saw Murder, Didn t Call the Police ,
was published in the New York Times two weeks later. In reality, only twelve people
witnessed the event yet each did nothing to significantly help Genovese until it was
too late. The Genovese murder has become the definitive example of the bystander
effect, the social phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to help someone in

Reading this book, made me realize that life in the 1600 s was far different than
what we know now. People were more vulgar and much more violent than how we
are today. Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, however was very religious and relied on God no
matter what she went through. She struggled with what she had to eat while being
with them in captivity. She also saw the difference in her cultureand their culture.
While reading the book, I noticed Mrs. Rowlandson took her bible with her
everywhere and that she made references to bible verses to help her build strength.
Mary Rowlandson relied on her faith even while she was being captured by the
Indians/ Native Americans and treated as a possession. There was a major cultural
difference between Rowlandson and the Indians. Rowlandson was not as
accepting of their culture due to the fact that they did not share the same Puritan
values as her. She always kept God with her even when she lost her daughter and
when she was separated from her husband. Although she kept her faith in God, she
still questioned why she was captured, and why she wasn t killed along with her
family. She begged God every day for mercy and strength to continue travel each
day. When the Indians came and burned down her town and killed people she
knew, and forced their way into homes, Rowlandson continued to ask God for
answers on what to do. Being that Rowlandson was a profound puritan, witnessing
the way the Indians sang and danced made her compare them to creatures of hell.

They are the oldest and most durable building materials for mankind. The clay
materials used are compounds of alumina, silica mixed with small amounts of lime,

For this fact, both H.R. Giger and Beatrix Potter should be studied for their separate
and varying contributions to the world of illustration.
H.R.Giger s illustrations are considered gothic with a twist of the cosmic
supernatural. Best known for his book, Necronomicon, he published in 1977, Giger
quickly rose to attention. This book is a collection of images with his most
recognized being depictions of aliens in a surrealistic biochemical dreamscape (HR
Giger). These representations caught the eye of Hollywood director Ridley Scott,
who based his horror movie, Alien, upon Giger s creations. This movie would be
awarded the 1980s Oscar for the Best Achievement in Visual Effects for title
character, stages of life cycle and environment (HR Giger). As an artist, Giger s
strongest illustration characteristic is artistic technique. Using ink, oils and
airbrushing, Giger s compositions are bold with the use of all available space filled

He was raised during a time where French leaders were very prejudiced against
Catholic establishments, which included schools (Picker 152). This did not deter
him evidently, as he discovered he wanted to become a priest at the young age of
12 (Zuccotti 54). PГ©re Paulin, a Capuchin friar at the time, mentored young
PГЁre on Catholic duties (Zuccotti 20). When he got older, PГЁre moved to Bruest
Esyden in the Netherlands to study theology at a Capuchin school (Zuccotti 22). He
did not stay at home because of the French ban forbidding members of religious
orders to teach at schools (Zuccotti 54). He was still living in the Netherlands in
1914 when World War 1 broke out.
Abandoning his studies, PГЁre moved back to France to join the military where he
served as a medic and a stretcher bearer (Zuccotti 54). During this time, he would
often send letters to his spiritual leader and mentor, presumably for guidance and
encouragement (Picker 152). He received numerous citations for his time in service
actions such as tending to soldiers and rescuing people on the field (Zuccotti 27).
Unfortunately, he had to be hospitalized for a few months due to a leg wound he
received while in service (Zuccotti 54). After the war, he returned back to Netherlands
in 1919 to continue his studies.
As his professors watched him pass his classes with flying colors, he was chosen to
transfer to the International College of Saint Lawrence of Brindisi in Rome (Zuccotti

English 111 Reflection
English 111 was the first class English class that I have taken since my senior year of
high school in 2004. When I first signed up for the class I figured it was going to
be a bit difficult with reading assignments, I was not expecting to be writing 3 to 5
papers every other week which I found to be hard at first. Within the first couple of
weeks of the class I quickly learned that I had to be able to manage my time carefully
between work, home, and school or that I was not going to do well at all. At first I
found this to be hard due to my career in law enforcement, working 2 weeks of days

At first this seemed to be easy but I later began to notice the assignment might
become boring to some reader s. After finishing the assignment I felt good with the
outcome but knew that I could have written a better paper. This was obvious after
the instructor reviewed the assignment and gave me a grade that hit hard. This
showed me first hand that I was a good writer but was far from being prefect. After
picking myself up, I reviewed the notes she provided and made the suggested
changes. I then resubmitted the assignment in hopes the changes were correct and I
would get a final grade that I knew I was capable of earning. After waiting the final
grade was submitted and I had earned a grade I knew I could earn. I know that
without the help of my peers and the instructor this would have not been
