steam engine and rifled artillery forged from iron would define a new tactical
advantage for both Confederate and Union Armies. Furthermore, these two new
inventions would also greatly increase the effects of speed, lethality, and mass at the
tactical, operational, and strategic levels during the Civil War.
Prior to the Civil War during the Napoleonic era, artillerywas a smoothbore weapon
system primarily forged with bronze. These systems were very large, cumbersome,
horse drawn and difficult to move into battle. However, near the end of the
Napoleonic Era the Gribeauval system would improve cannon systems by casting
them out of a solid piece of bronze, and boring out the center. This new Napoleonic
invention increased range and accuracy, ultimately, establishing the cornerstone of
rifled artillery.1
During the beginning of the Civil War the Army Ordnance Board attempted to apply
rifling to bronze bore cannons. Nonetheless, this form of rifling would prove
unsuccessful, as the bores were shot out in less than 500 rounds. However, Phoenix

David Brooks Moral Suicide begins with him lamenting how easy it is to criticize a
Tom Wolfe novel. However, Brooks decides to instead to debate the books ideas on
the climate of morality today. The plot of the newest Wolfe novel I Am Charlotte
Simmons, follows the eponymous character moving from her small town in North
Carolina to a high end university only to discover its moraldecay. Wolfe describes
college like a festering hell hole with no regards to moralityand all that it entails. He
describes a moral decay taking place, calling it a moral suicide. Brooks criticizes
Wolfe s portrayal of college students as these sort of gremlins that have no care for
