Class 4 softswitches are used by wholesale providers and carriers to route large volumes of long distance and wholesale call traffic between multiple IP networks, while Class 5 softswitches are used by retail providers and end-users to route local call traffic to specific IP addresses, SIP addresses or DIDs of individual users handling smaller call volumes over smaller areas. The key differences are that Class 4 softswitches deal with wholesale call traffic and route calls over larger areas and networks, while Class 5 softswitches deal with retail call traffic and route calls locally.
