The first in our long list of career articles – Diagnostic Medical
Sonographer
Firstly, a little about me and the reasons for this blog.
Over the years I have seen many career opportunities that would provide applicants with a secure, we l paid, bright
career path we l into the future. As I enjoy watching people succeed and helping them to reach their potential, it became
a hobby of mine trying to match up people with these careers, providing them with several options and seeing which one
they preferred.
It’s something that I became fairly good at; getting to know my students and finding out what interested them, before
suggesting potential career opportunities for them to look into in more detail. Obviously there is a natural limit to the
number of people I can provide this information to, I only know so many people and of those only a few people
actually fit the profile of someone that might fit into one of these roles. It was then that I decided to start a blog on
the internet.
This method a lows me to meet and talk to far more individuals, with it being more likely that the people who decide to
read this blog are actually looking for the information that I am providing.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
This is a prime example of a great career; given the current economic climate we have suffered there are many industries
which are in decline. The medical profession is however, not one of them. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics
actually expected the area of sonography to grow by 44% between the years 2010 and 2020. As they state that 20%
growth is deemed “highly favorable”, you can see that not only does this career provide excellent job security, but also
allows room for plenty of trainees to easily gain future employment. In fact 23,400 extra job positions are expected to
be created in this area, and this could actually be revised upwards due to modern advancements and innovations in the
industry.

Education
There are also a lot of different roads to entry for this profession. You can choose from a 1-2 year course, to up to 4
years in length for a Bachelor’s Degree. These are then followed by a paid internship to obtain on the job work
experience training. These ultrasound technician training programs focus on real life, everyday procedures and
techniques that you will use, and drop a lot of the theoretical filler type information featured on some courses.

The prerequisites of these courses can come from previous subjects, mainly physics, math, and biology, or can come
from a lied health programs. You can choose to study at offline or online schools; however the main thing to bear in
mind in this area is that you need to make sure both your school and course is accredited. While it is possible to become
an ultrasound technician without being on an accredited course, it helps your future job prospects immensely and can
also increase your starting salary.
Salary
The salary for a diagnostic sonographer is very competitive. The current average salary is about $62,000 and this can
rise to up to $90,000 for the more experience practitioners. This career also has an excellent route to promotion; it is
not unusual for experienced sonographers to take on managerial positions in their specialized field.
Daily Duties
The daily job of a sonographer is also varied and is great at keeping you fit. While
a sonographer is expected to routinely lift 50 pounds, bend, stoop, have the use of both arms and be able to help
patients onto and off examination tables, they also get to do many different activities. Sonographers do a lot more than
simply scan patients and record the images. They are involved in making direct decisions based on the images they take,
turn these into reports and accurately provide analysis on these reports to a physician in order to aid diagnoses.
Technicians are also involved in the maintenance of the ultrasound machine, archiving patient images, providing quality
patient customer care while treating them and help in general administration tasks.
