This study examined differences in body image satisfaction between female collegiate athletes participating in individual versus team sports. The researchers hypothesized that athletes in individual sports would have lower body image satisfaction due to greater pressure to maintain appearance. A survey of 130 female athletes at Ithaca College found no significant differences in body image variables between individual and team sport athletes. However, higher fear of failure was correlated with lower body image satisfaction across all variables, regardless of sport type. The researchers concluded that teaching athletes to focus less on failure and more on success may improve body image.
