Football hooliganism in England dates back to the 1880s and involved gangs of supporters intimidating neighborhoods and attacking referees, opposing supporters, and players. Between the two world wars there were no recorded instances of hooliganism, but it reemerged in the late 1950s and incidents increased throughout the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, the UK had a reputation for football hooliganism, dubbed the "English Disease." While hooliganism remains a concern in some European countries, crackdowns in the UK have improved Britain's reputation abroad in recent decades.
