Sportsmanship Case
Study
PRESENTATION BY: JUSTYN BOWEN
Section 1 - Introduction
 To me, sportsmanship means to show ethical and respectful behavior
towards others in a sports environment. This presentation will support my
findings based on this definition and I will hopefully be able to draw a final
conclusion towards the idea of sportsmanship.
Section 2 - Owners
 When I researched team owners, I found that most people related them to
the idea that sportsmanship was dead
 Many claim owners to have no backbone for their team at all when it
comes to their ethics
 Because owners generally don’t dictate as much on the field as much as
coaches and players do, they often do ridiculous things such as several
owners from the NBA Developmental League, leading to various fines
 This helps us draw the conclusion that the team is a reflection of one’s
behavior meaning that the team owner sets the standards for protocol
Section 2 - Coaches
 Coaches have more of a say in what players do out on the field
 Some coaches take the field with a certain swagger and attitude that is so
positive and so contagious, it spreads to others
 Other times it’s harmful to others such as Sean Payton with the
BountyGate scandal and Jerry Sanduski
 Coaches are the real leaders in sports and players model what the head
honchos, therefore coaches should set the example for the roster they
create
Section 3 - Health
 Health is important and can determine a lot about the success of a team
 It determines a lot through sportsmanship and can make a team frustrated
based on big losses and God forbid they intentionally harm players or
someone else
 Now we know that athletes take risks every time they play their sport,
sometimes the game can get into your head and they frustrations of things
you can’t control, such as injury, can really affect your mindset
Section 3 - Safety
 Safety is always important to the integrity of the game because it
determines how long you could potentially play it for
 This is where the policies of each league step in, in order to help make the
sports world a place of competitive spirit and not stupidity
 You still see people like Ryan Braun or LeVeon Bell abuse drug policies in
order to help them when they’re deteriorating their bodies
 If you do something to jeopardize the integrity of the game, you’re
ultimately hurting yourself and make yourself weaker and therefore losing
safety and trust from the league you play for
Section 4 - Athletes
 Athletes play the biggest role in sportsmanship being that there actions
are under their control
 They could be positive influences towards others such as Chris Paul who
donates back to his community on a regular basis
 Or they could be negative influences such as Deandre Jordan who went
behind a team’s back to sign back with the Clippers and demoralize or
blatantly lie to the Mavericks organization
 Ultimately, it’s up to the athlete and their decisions are solely their own.
For every action is an equal consequence
Section 4 - Community
 Community supplies a good, solid, and supportive background for that
athlete to be raised in
 This allows the athlete to mature in the right sense and become the best
they can be
 To second the athlete, this is also one of the more important parts of
sportsmanship because this is what helps to mold the athlete into the
person they are today
Section 5 – Fan Behavior
 This disregards all previous statements and relates to the fans and the fans
only
 Their behavior can be far from disappointing and by trying to prove their
loyalty, they end up doing something stupid like throwing garbage onto
the field or annoying a celebrity on social media
 The fans should represent that team in a fashion like no other and should
come together in rough and good times because that’s what
sportsmanship is really all about
Conclusion
I chose the image above to represent my view of sportsmanship because it
shows the ultimate rivals in football, a DE and a QB, getting along. That’s
respect and we know it. I want this o become the future and the only way
people can do this is if everyone puts whatever differences they have behind
them and just play the game. We should bring in the youth aspects like
shaking hands at the end, or “good game,” and enforce them in the
professional world because believe it or not, that’ll change more lives for the
better. That’s my ultimate vision and I hope that was clearly presented in this
project.
