DEVIANCE
What is Deviance?
• Deviance is a behavior that violates the
standards of conduct or expectations or social
norms of a group or society.
5 Types of Deviance in Terms:
• Innovation
• Conformists
• Ritualism
• Retreats
• Rebellion
Innovation
is a response due to the strain generated
by our culture’s emphasis on wealth and lack of
opportunities to get rich, which causes people
to be “innovators” by engaging in stealing and
selling drugs.
Conformists
accept society’s goals and the socially
acceptable means of achieving them.
Conformists are mostly middle-class people.
Ritualism
refers to the inability to reach a cultural
goal thus embracing the rules to the point
where the people in question lose sight of their
larger goals in order to feel respectable.
Retreatism
is the rejection of both cultural goals and
means, letting the person in question “drop
out”. Retreatist reject the society goals.
Rebellion
is somewhat similar to retreatism because
the people in question also reject the both
cultural goals and means, but they go one step
further to a “counterculture” that supports
orders that already exist.
Types of Deviance
Odd Behavior
Admired Behavior
Bad Behavior
Odd Behavior
Things like strange ways of dressing.
Behaviors that are not criminal, but still differ
from acceptable behavior
Admired Behavior
“Good” or “Admirable” behavior that breaks
social norms…
Example are…
extreme heroism…saving another person’s
life while putting yourself at risk
Bad Behavior
Generally this behavior is law breaking/
criminal behavior.
Deviance can be understood
within its social context.
