SUMMARY
Major changes were experienced by European countries
from the 15th to the 18th centuries C.E. The Renaissance
and Reformation movements, the Scientific Revolution,
and the Age of Exploration were pivotal events that
pushed the feudal European societies to new perspectives
on science and religion, and new sources of wealth. Amid
these changes, there were countries that became stronger
while other became weak. This period in history would be
critical for the development of modern countries as we
know them today.

During the Middle Ages, the Arab Muslims were able
to control the Iberian Peninsula, which they named Al-
Andalus.
During the 13th century C.E., Christian forces began to
recover Iberian lands.
In October 1469 C.E., King Ferdinand of Sicily and heir
of Aragon, married Isabella, the heiress of the
kingdom of Castille.

KING FERDINAND AND ISABELLA

With the marriage of King Ferdinand and Isabella, Spain
became united.
The Kingdom of Spain strongly supported Roman Catholic
Church
They asked the Pope to give them freedom to
implement the Inquisition within their territory.
The two strengthened their affairs with other kingdoms.
Their grandson, King Charles V became the most powerful
ruler in Europe at that time.
One of the problem that he faced is the Reformation
movement.

In 1556 C.E., Charles stepped down and was replaced
by his son, Philip II.
In his reign he strengthen the power of monarchy

He waged conflict with Protestant in order to
preserve Catholicism.
In 1571 C.E., a fight broke between the Spaniard and
the Muslim Turks, over the control of trade in the
Mediterranean sea

Spanish monarchy also had conflict with the Dutch
Protestant.
The Successful revolt of Portuguese against Spain in
1640, compounded its problem
Trade and industry were neglected
Spain relied on short term resources like gold and
silver, which came from their colonies such as
Mexico and Philippines.

In the 15th century, Emperor Sigismund of the Holy
Roman Empire provided the Hohenzollern family with
the control over Brandenburg.
Frederick I became the first king of Prussia
Under King Fredrick II, Prussia expanded.
He was known for his adherence to the art and
ideas of the Enlightenment.
In 1756 C.E., an alliance was formed between Austria
and France to fight Prussia, which led to a 7 years of
war.

Louis XIV rules directly in 1661 at the age of 23
declared the divine mandate of kings to rule, a
display of absolute monarchy.
Ignored the authority of political institutions such
as the Estates General and Parliament.
Led according to his will.
Despite his power, his absolutist policies
contributed to the decline of France as kingdom.
When his reign ended in 1715 C.E., France was
nearly bankrupt.

The events of the Civil war to the Glorious Revolution
showed central role played by the Parliament.
Monarchy was restored in 1660 C.E., it only played
because of the will of the Parliamentarians, rather
than the resistance of the Royalist.
They avoided the armed struggle in the changing of
leadership during the Glorious Revolution.

The collapse of the Aztecs and Inca Empires in the hands
of Spanish conquistadores was the first step in the
European dominion of the Americas
European communities, rapidly increased and widened
after the fall of the Central and South American empires.
The monarchy granted the colonizers with the right to
own the lands they took.
The native Americans were forced to labor and to pay
tribute to the colonial government

North America became the land of opportunities for the
Europeans.
They established business or worked as staffers for traders
Over time, the generation of Europeans who were born and
lived in the colonies of North America saw burden in remaining
under the rule of British monarchy
The ideas of the Enlightenment, along with the concepts of
independence and nationhood prompted them to stage a
revolution.

The 16th to the 18th centuries C.E. saw the establishment of
European states under their respective monarchies. Compared to
the Middle Ages, the king this time was more powerful, his power
more centralized, and his hold of the local leaders further
strengthened. The wealth acquired from their colonies in the
Americas, Africa and Asia helped the king maintain his power.
However, it cannot be said that this happened in all parts of Europe.
The Holy Roman Empire and the Italian states remained
fragmented, and even Poland was divided among powerful
kingdoms. Empires that led different ethnic groups with different
languages and cultures prevailed. The desire of these groups to
build their own country became possible after a significant
revolution that changed the daily lives of the Europeans.
