SEMINAR
Presented by
mohit kumar meena
Agriclaas@gmail.com
•The term biotechnology was first coined by Hungarian
engineer, Karoly (Karol) in 1919.
• Biotechnology is the branch of biology which exploits
the biological processes to produce various products
which are useful to human beings.
•Government of India set up the department of
biotechnology under the ministry of science & technology
in 1986 with the aim of enhancing the biotechnology in
India.
•India has become the hub of biotechnology since the last
decade & has become the main center of attraction for
global investments due to the skilled & knowledgeable
manpower available in India.
INTRODUCTION
MAJOR MILESTONES IN INDIAN BIOTECH INDUSTRY
1978: India’s 1st biotech firm, Biocon, was setup
1986: Department of Biotechnology (DBT) was formed
1998: Monsanto Research established an R&D centre for
plant genomics
2010: Cadila Healthcare, Serum Institute of India & Bharat
Biotech launched 1st H1N1 swine flu vaccine.
 2012: India ranked 12th in the world in biotech and 3rd
largest in Asia Pacific, after Japan and Korea
2016: India's National Intellectual Property Rights policy
was launched.
 2017: Ministry of Health, Malaysia, awarded, Biocon, a
contract worth US$68.43 million to supply
recombinant human insulin formulations for a
duration of three years.
EMPLOYMENT OPPURTUNITIES
In today’s advanced era, when people are exposed to so
many physical disorders, biotech plays a vital role in
developing medicines, vaccines, energy production &
conservation.
Today in India there are more than 350 biotech companies
providing employment for over 20,000 scientists.
Opportunities in India are great with many universities &
other institutions offering B.Sc., B.E, B.Tech courses in
biotech. PG can be done in special areas like agriculture
biotech, marine biotech, medical biotech or biomedical
engineering.
 Those who have done PG courses can apply for research
work starting as junior researcher.
