Is it an art or a science?
For Kowloon JCI

5. Referral, Trust & Respect
• The most fundamental act of networking occurs
when you give someone a referral or get a
referral from someone based on the relationship
of trust that has been built
• People trust the judgment of those they respect.
And they will often make decisions, even large
ones, on that basis if they feel the other person
has better knowledge
6. Trust influences behavior
Examples:
• Parents make decisions on their children
by learning from other parents
• Engaged couples make decisions on their
weddings by learning from other couples
How do they get to know each other?
10. I don’t know enough people. How
can I network?
• You will be surprised how many people you
actually know. Let’s try counting how many…
– classmates you’ve had in the past?
– colleagues you’ve had in your current or former jobs?
– people are their in your church?
– members are there in the chambers or associations
that you belong to?
– family members?
– client or suppliers do do business with?
• You may not have all their current contacts, but
you know them

28. Opinion leadership
• Despite the scandal, he was able to attract media
attention, and became an opinion leader on a
number of public issues
• You don’t have to act like him. I chose a more
professional low-profile approach

30. Your networking strategy
• What are you doing with your networks?
• Are you keeping in touch?
• Are you expanding your networks?
• Are you using your network in a way that
benefits your personal goal?
31. Will networking help me find a job?
My career path:
• UBC (professor recommendation)
– Management Trainee Job at Jardines
• TDC (plenty of friends working there)
– Tips on written test and interviews
• Mission Hills (former colleague)
– I was persuaded to work for the Chu’s family
• HKGCC (former boss)
– CEO was relative to my former TDC boss
• RICS (business network)
– My personal network was mature enough, but I still
keep building every day
32. Most good jobs are “hidden”
• Have you seen the government advertising for
secretary, under-secretary or political assistant?
• Do you know head hunting firms have a position
called “research associate?”
• Some industries simply don’t rely on recruitment
ad. Personal referrals are more important.
• Even if you need to send out your CV, don’t you
want to put down someone who can carry some
weight in the eyes of the future employer?
