At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
Knowledge: Identify the society and contributions of Babylonian civilization,
Skills: Create a reflective paragraph about impacts of Babylonian civilization
to the present society

Materials: Manila Paper, Pentel Pen, Pictures
Values: Develop a sense of appreciation of what was in history and it’s implications
to the present. Valuing the contributions of civilization to the present society.

Fertile Crescent? Anyone?”

please pay attention to the discussion,
and later on we will have activities.”
“ At the south-western corner of Asia lies
the valley of the Tigris and Euphrates.
Rivers which like the Nile Valley, was the
scene of mankind’s triumphant ascent
from barbarism to civilization. Known as
Mesopotamia, meaning “land between
rivers,” it was also called the Fertile
Crescent because of its shape.
“So, what are the two valleys in
south-western corner of Asia?”
“Again, what is the meaning of
Mesopotamia? Yes Mark?

“Mesopotamia was divided into two
geographical districts, Babylonia in the
south at the mouth of the Tigris and
Euphrates and Assyria in the___________

Babylonian Civilization started”
“After several centuries of strife, the
Amorites emerged victorious.
Hammurabi (1948-1905BC), Amorite
king of Babylon, combine Akkad and
Sumer into one country which came to
be known as Babylonia after the capital
city of Babylon”
“Okay!, who was the king that starts to
lead Babylon?”
“Very good!, Hammurabi was an able
statesman as well as a great conqueror”
“How is the Babylonian society during
the time of King Hammurabi?
“When we talk of society, we are
referring to what?

“community, family, and social class sir”
“Very good!. Society in ancient Babylonia
consisted of three social classes. The first

broad description can picture out that is
to be rich if you wish to be a noble in the
society of Babylonians”
“The second class is called the freemen.
Everybody please read who are they?”
“Okay!, so the second class can be
categorized as in the middle. They are
not so rich but not so poor also”
“Let’s proceed with the third social class.

“Note that society during the Babylonian
Civilization have social stratification.
Primarily the basis for this is wealth and
power.”
“If we will recall our lesson in about
India, Babylonian social stratification is
the same with the Caste system. So, who
among you can enumerate the structure
of the Caste system?”
“Very good!. In that Caste system, wealth
and power is also the primary
determiner if where a person should be
classified.”
“Let me ask someone in the class. Would
you like to have a social classification in
the Philippines like of India and
Babylonia? Yes Arnold.”
“1. Nobles- this is compose of king,
priests and rich landlords”
“2. The Freeman- consists of farmers
merchants and artisans”
“3. The Slaves-composed of poor people
who cannot afford to be a freeman more
so to be a noble”
“ Sir, the Caste system is composed of:
Bhramins--------priests
Kshatriya--------warriors
Vaishya-----------warriors
Sudras----------- slaves”
“No. Sir. Because there might be a
problem of discrimination. Well in fact
we Filipinos sir are known to be loving to
our fellow”

avoiding discrimination, social
classification should not be observed
here in the Philippines”
“Farming was the chief industry. The
Babylonians were also skilled craftsmen.
They carried on commerce with other
nations”

a means of industry, therefore society
during thar time is classified as? Yes

“Their invention of the wheel replaced

cuneiform because of it’s wedge-shaped

writing also as what we have studied
already in our previous lesson. Right?”

“precisely it was very strict. As a matter
of fact the law is termed as “retributive
justice” for it’s provisions”
“In the context of our country, principles
of laws are sometimes denied because of
money and power. Yet justice delayed,

“Another contribution of the Babylonian

“Babylonian’s knowledge on astrology is
more advance than of the early
Egyptians. They were the first people to
devise the twelve zodiac signs which
astrologers now use in their trade”
“I could remember about it’s priniciple
known as: mata sa mata, ngipin sa ngipin
sir”
“The Code of Hammurabi is the “oldest
code in history”. The code consists of 285
laws. It covers numerous subjects. It
reveals a sense of justice, though many of
the penalties for crimes are severe.”
