This document provides guidance on designing effective online and blended learning courses. It emphasizes that online learning requires a different approach than traditional classroom teaching. Existing classroom materials and strategies often do not directly translate online without modification. The document suggests utilizing the affordances of technology to create interactive and collaborative learning experiences, such as forums, authentic projects, and time-sensitive activities. It also stresses the importance of community and facilitating engagement in the online environment.

This concept of a PLN has been around for many years. What has changed in recent years though is the reach, the size and the availability of that network. Your PLN is no longer tied to your zip code and you no longer work in isolation. Collaboration no longer just means to work with a colleague in your building. You are able to connect to educators from around the world who are ready and willing to teach beyond the walls of their own classroom.
Your PLN is customized as:
• it filters the vast information available and pushes what interests you
• you choose who is part of your network
• you decide when and how to access and use it
Learning how to build your own PLN is:
• a 21st century skill
• learning about tools that enable your to make these connections
• being in charge of your own Professional Development
• connecting to educators who will contribute to your learning
• extending your learning
• receiving “just in time” learning and help
• becoming globally aware
• sharing your own best practices
• experiencing the power of 21st century learning for yourself
• filtering through “too much” available information

Blended Learning: Possibilities for Transformative LearningCresencia Fong
Keynote address presented August 22, 2012 at the Toronto District School Board's Summer Institute organized by the ICT-Teaching and Learning with Technology and the Library and Learning Resources and Interdisciplinary Studies departments. See http://cresenciafong.com/blog/?p=92.
Help all students succeed in your classroom by using a variety of scaffolding strategies, including verbal, instructional, and procedural. THIEVES, GIST, and CONGA line featured.
In this talk, I will deliver a detailed case study on how WordPress can be used to deliver online courses and build highly engaged communities of students.
Most online courses achieve student completion rates of around 2% - 10% according to this MOOCS research study (http://www.katyjordan.com/MOOCproject.html)
We have achieved 65% completion rates of our online courses by building incredibly engaging courses and a world class learning environment built on WordPress. The best part of this talk is that the online courses and community we have built are all for WordPress developers and freelancers so this is truly a WordPress showcase piece.
The online education market is worth over US$100BN and WordPress provides a great platform for all online educators to improve the quality of their courses and deliver better student outcomes.
The core technology covered will include WordPress, BuddyPress, bbPress, BadgeOS and the LearnDash Learning Management System.
I will also talk about the psychology and strategy of delivering an online course to maximise student engagement and completion rates.

Free PD on Demand for Educators--What, Why, Where, How?
Co-presenters: Dr. Peggy George and Lorna Constantini
In these times of severe budget cuts and compelling needs for meaningful professional development for teachers, we need quality, no-cost/low-cost alternatives. We want/need to respond to the demands for transforming education to meet the needs of 21st century learners, but how? Classroom 2.0 Live co-hosts, Peggy George (retired elementary principal and university pre-service education instructor) and Lorna Costantini (educational consultant in Ontario, Canada) will share how they help educators use Web 2.0 technologies to support learning. Learn how they participate in (and host) free online webinars and conferences on a regular basis, and how they collaborate via Twitter/Facebook to learn from and share with educators in a professional learning network (PLN). In this presentation they will share their discoveries and specific resources to help you learn what's available, where to find it and possible ways to use it for your own "PD on Demand" in your districts/schools.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
