Weehawken/Union City Social Innovation Meetup KickoffSandy Sanchez
At the Meetup kickoff event, we introduced the concepts of social innovation and design thinking. The participants were taken through a fun and interactive exercise that served as an icebreaker as well as an introduction to some of the concepts in design thinking, empathy, active listening, and prototyping. We discussed how design thinking can be used in our community, referencing examples from other communities in the US as well as abroad. We also discussed the different types of events, how to participate, and volunteer opportunities.

Tools for facilitating participatory events onlineMira Bangel
When developing an online event, we ask ourselves:
How can we create amazing participatory experiences that allow people to completely forget they are not in a physical environment? How can we turn the online challenge into an opportunity?
Much of what makes an event special is the time we spend together with our clients sensing into the deeper purpose, building a strong design with clear roles in the team and of course the participatory mindset and practices we apply when we facilitate.
However technology does play a key role and technology should be an enabler rather than a disabler :)
What most people fail to realise, is that any technological tool needs to be selected and used, based on the specific PURPOSE that has to be addressed.
So how can we understand the different expectations/needs that we have to address? And how can we select the right tools, based on these specific needs?
Here is a practical guide that we've pulled together on the topic with the SenseTribe team. How was this guide developed? Laura Grassi has been the key author, Marina Roa has added her wonderful illustrations, Raffaella Toticchi has added a mental model and many other amazing SenseTribers have added their ideas and thoughts, thank you. As part of the Social Life of Cities collaborative, we are working the University of Chicago, Cisco and McCaffery Interests to create new ways to use digital technology to help people feel safer in Chicago's south side. In our first workshops, in July 2012, we discussed what blocks and what boosts community resilience on the south side, and designed four propositions for new ways to use digital technology to tackle these issues. Our second workshops, a year later in July 2013, focused on one idea: "Team Approach to Violence", TATV. We spent the day designing TATV, looking at how south sides use new technology and examaining the experiences of people from different ages and backgrounds. We will be working with our Chicago partners to pilot and evaluate the new approach. For info see www.social-life.co/project/tatv
Workshop: By the People, for the People: Developing Digital Strategy That Mat...Dana Allen-Greil
Presented at the Museum Computer Network conference in Montreal, November 2013 by Dana Allen-Greil, Emily Lytle-Painter, and Annelisa Stephan.
No matter where you are in your organization, or where your museum is in its digital evolution, you can play a leadership role in developing a meaningful digital strategy. But to do this well, you'll need to think first about people: Who are you trying to serve? Who do you need to communicate or collaborate with? And how can you best converse with those people? Maybe you have a formal strategy in place, but you need to be better at communicating it to leadership and your colleagues. Perhaps you're working on a digital strategy in the absence of a larger institutional plan. Or maybe you're just getting started in thinking about how to tackle the strategic planning process. There is no one right way to build a digital strategy, but there are frameworks, tools, and tips that can make the process smoother and more collaborative.

From participation to policy: how design helps citizens shape immigration? It was the title of this presentation on the 15.9.2023, in the conference Legal Design. In this presentation, you will get a behind-the-scenes look at the real-life design work carried out for the preliminary studies of Finland's forthcoming immigration law, the Aliens Act. The project took place at the Department of Immigration within the Ministry of the Interior from 2021 to 2023, and it has been recently published and can be accessed here: https://julkaisut.valtioneuvosto.fi/handle/10024/164810. .
Throughout the process, we integrated service design approaches at both operational and strategic levels, and during this presentation I will open up about my experience as designer. My aim was to have an open and honest conversation about the challenges of using participatory practices in lawmaking, using this case study as a prime example.
I explore how design could play a pivotal role in creating a more inclusive and citizen-centered approach to shaping immigration policy.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
Between Filth and Fortune- Urban Cattle Foraging Realities by Devi S Nair, An...Mansi Shah
This study examines cattle rearing in urban and rural settings, focusing on milk production and consumption. By exploring a case in Ahmedabad, it highlights the challenges and processes in dairy farming across different environments, emphasising the need for sustainable practices and the essential role of milk in daily consumption.
You could be a professional graphic designer and still make mistakes. There is always the possibility of human error. On the other hand if you’re not a designer, the chances of making some common graphic design mistakes are even higher. Because you don’t know what you don’t know. That’s where this blog comes in. To make your job easier and help you create better designs, we have put together a list of common graphic design mistakes that you need to avoid.

3. NMTS FACTS (DOM-E5042)
- 3 ECTs
- Starts 23rd of February ends 27th of February
- Everyday from 9 to 5 pm (unless otherwise stated)
- Workload aprox. 80 hours (contact hours 7x5 35h +
Independent work 45h)
- Three deliverables: 1) 10 min presentation and a blog
post** 2) Manual targeted to the partner NGO* 3)
Learning Diary*
• ** ready by Friday
• * Delivered 10 days after the WS
4. Theme for 2015
• Relationship between violence against
women (VAW) and digital media
à New technologies are used both to perpetrate violence
and to fight back (seek help/organize against), what does
this mean for the design of services that are digitally
based?
5. Scope and aims for the WS
• Brief 0.1: Create new possibilities for women who are
experiencing violence or are survivors, to reach out and
get in touch with a local NGO active in this field. How to
do this through digital means?
à We expect well defined concepts for new services (and
related tools) that the NGO can continue developing –or
take into use – after the WS
à Note: Campaigns are interesting and needed, but not
within the main focus of this WS
6.
7. What we did
1. Lectures, readings and exercises to get familiar with
the theme (reflected in a learning diary).
2. Group work to develop a design concept(s) with a
pitching session in the end (presented with a 10 min
AV presentation per team).
3. Document and report our findings to others (In the
blog and in a manual).
8. What we learned
• Identify some of the challenges and possibilities of working and
designing together with a third sector organization (vs a
commercial organization or public sector) addressing a complex
situation
• Define, develop and evaluate a “conceptual design” proposal for
a digital service that can be used strategically by the organization to
develop and improve its service portfolio.
• Some concrete tools and vocabulary that can be used in
service design as it intertwines with digital media design and
development.
11. Peer Picnics
The Peer Picnic is a live peer meeting, where people can gather just as friends do. There could be for instance
five locations, where the picnic is organized regularly, eg. once per week. Events can be shared via
Facebook.
Because only very few NL clients shall have an access to a f2f support group, the casual peer meetings would
reach a lot wider group of women.
If some code language is needed because of possible stalkers, for instance “strawberry” could mean the Park of
Koff, “blueberry” Töölönranta etc. If needed, an online peer group could also start by a joint picnic, so that
the identity of every person is safely verified.
13. Spotify Survivor
Music is one of the most empowering things. Oppressed women can add their favourite pieces to the “I will
survive” playlist at the NL web site and play it in Spotify.
When women do not have much space outside home and cannot get into contact with peers, they can feel the
support of the NL community through the shared experience of the empowering music.
The guiding principle is that no-one is left alone. Even a minimalistic sign of peer support may help to recreate
the sense of dignity.
16. How was it for us?
• Happy to be able to do this workshop!
• Surprised that no men came to the course
• Emotional and difficult topic that brought a lot of
synergy within participants and the organization.
• Fun
• Interesting enough to think that we want to work more
with this topic in the future as part of our research.
17. How was it for you?
We will hear about this after the presentations.
