New questions have arisen in light of today’s demands for innovation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), increasingly global jobs markets, worldwide competition, and imbalanced opportunities for study abroad. One such question: Should the selection of study abroad location be tied to local resources and assets? Using two STEM-focused study abroad programs in Europe as examples, we’ll discuss this question, and bring together innovators in STEM education to identify major challenges and best practices, and develop new roadmaps for creating successful STEM programs.

Looking ahead – field trials in iterative and exploratory design of ubicomp s...
We investigate in which forms field trials are a workable model as part of an exploratory design process for sporadic, mobile, non-work settings. A major concern of evaluating ubicomp systems is to study how practices and context of use emerge and develop over time when new technology is introduced. To introduce a sophisticated version of our own prototype in the course of an iterative design process, we conducted a public field trial of the system—a new platform for mobile democratic discussions in municipal planning—that we distributed via the Android Market. However, it turned out to be surprisingly difficult to evaluate our design in a setting that stretches over time, place, and without a preselected set of users. Analyzing our difficulties, we develop a general model for methods studying ubicomp systems. On the basis of this model, we characterize an openly interactive approach to field trials in order to look ahead rather than back.

Living next to a flagship development (Master thesis)

Steve Shimmin - Portfolio

Teaching UX (and anything in general) is a large exercise in understanding how others learn and building empathy towards them. You’re teaching people from 24 years old a few years out of university all the way up to 50-something years old and whom are lawyers. You have to be able to make people comfortable enough to acknowledge what they don’t know and not be ashamed of learning. We’ll go through the fun part of teaching and the dark side while translating teaching methods into ways to help your clients understand your design process.

4. Fertilize occasionally. Apply compost or organic fertilizer every few months during the growing season.

The Kebun-kebun Bangsar project proposed turning a piece of unused land owned by TNB into a community garden for residents of the Bangsar area. However, the project initially faced opposition from residents concerned about land erosion. Nearly a year later, the garden is flourishing with various community groups involved in gardening and learning about gardening there.
