Describe the roles of weight reduction strategies in
management of obesity

2. • Dietary control
• Behavorial modifications
• Drug therapy
• Surgical management

3. • Acting on both serotoninergic and non adrenergic
pathway. Eg sibutramine
• Cannabinoid 1 receptor blockers; rimonabant
• Inhibitor of pancreatic and gastric lipase-orlistat
• Glucagon like peptide 1

4. • Indicated when BMI >35kg/m2
• Surgical procedures:
i) Restrictive procedures(adjustable gastric
banding, vertical banded gastroplasty & sleeve
gastroplasty)
ii) Malabsorptive procedures(biliopancreatic
diversion and Roux-en-Y gastric bipass)

5. Constituent of diet for weight loss:
• Total energy intake: 1000Kcal/day composed of >50g
protein,100gm carbohydrate, 40 g fat
• Carbohydrates should be in the form of complex
carbohydrates such as vegetables or fruits than simple
sugars
• Alcohol should be discouraged

6. • Group counseling
• Changes in eating pattern

7. Roles of weight reduction in PCOS
• To lower insulin resistance
• To lower serum androgen levels
• To increase Sex Hormone Binding
Globulin(SHBG)
• To restore fertility
• To prevent further complications
