Descartes Myth-Gilbert Ryle
Gilbert Ryle’s The Concept of Mind
Gilbert Ryle (1900–76) was a philosopher who taught at Oxford and who made important
contributions to the philosophy of mind and to "ordinary language philosophy." His most important
writings included Philosophical Arguments (1945), The Concept of Mind (1949), Dilemmas (1954),
Plato 's Progress (1966), and On Thinking (1979).
The Concept of Mind (1949) is a critique of the notion that the mind is distinct from the body, and it
is a rejection of the theory that mental states are separable from physical states. According to Ryle,
the classical theory of mind, as represented by Cartesian rationalism, asserts that there is a basic
distinction between mind and matter. However, the classical theory makes a ... Show more content

Thus, the mind consists of various abilities or dispositions that explain such behaviors as learning,
remembering, knowing, feeling, or willing. However, personal abilities or dispositions are not the
same as mental processes or events. To refer to abilities or dispositions as if they are mental
occurrences is to make a basic kind of category–mistake.
The nature of a person’s motives may be defined by the actions and reactions of that person in
various circumstances or situations. The nature of a person 's motives in a particular situation may
not necessarily be determined by any hidden mental processes or intellectual acts within that person.
Motives may be revealed or explained by a person’s behavior in a situation.
Ryle criticizes the theory that the mind is a place where mental images are apprehended, perceived,
or remembered. Sensations, thoughts, and feelings do not belong to a mental world distinct from the
physical world. Knowledge, memory, imagination, and other abilities or dispositions do not reside
"within" the mind as if the mind were a space in which these dispositions could be situated or
located. Furthermore, dispositions are not the same as behavioral actions; actions may, however, be
explained by dispositions.
Dispositions are neither visible nor hidden, because they are not in the same logical category as
behavioral actions. Dispositions are not mental processes or intellectual

My Musical Theatre
Throughout my entire life I have never had any real interest in musical theatre. One time when I was
in about 5th grade, my grandfather took me, my brother and my cousin to a showing of the
"Nutcracker." Let me tell you, I tried my hardest, I really tried, but I couldn't stay awake for the
entire performance. This experience I had put a bad taste in my mouth as for the next several years, I
never attended another musical theatre event.
One day in the spring, I was going through Golden Bear Advising, and I saw that Berkeley
recommended that everyone should listen to the Hamilton soundtrack. I didn't know much about the
musical other than that a couple of my friends in my high school's theatre company listened to it.
My first thought was that it must be better than the Nutcracker, so I decided I'd give it a chance.
About 15 seconds into "Alexander Hamilton" I remember saying out loud, "hmm wow, this bumps!"
My first time listening to the soundtrack, I didn't listen to it all the way through, but I was definitely
hooked –– I wanted to keep listening. Over the summer, whenever I'd go on long car rides, I'd try to
listen to the soundtrack. To be honest, before I listened to the soundtrack, I didn't think that I would
like it, simply because I wasn't a fan of musical theatre. However, I was blown away and thoroughly
the music, the way in which it was presented and the story that was told.
What sticks out to me about the soundtrack is that it kept my attention because at the end

Anne of Green Gables Essay
I read Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. This book is about a young orphan child, with a
never–ending imagination, named Anne. Anne has been taken in and out of orphanages all her life.
Until, one day Matthew Cuthbert and his sister, Miss Marilla Cuthbert, are interested in having a
young boy to live with them. They called the orphanage and told them to send the child on the train.
He goes to the train station to pick the child up, but to his surprise he found Anne. Anne tells
Matthew how she imagines living there would be like. She was so set on staying that Matthew just
couldn't leave her at the train station. He takes her to his house, and while on the journey, Anne is
enjoying every moment of the beautiful flowered valleys. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She meets a new "bosom" friend Diana, not to mention all the other friends she meets in
the book. The setting helps make the story exciting. The setting is at Green Gables. Green Gables is
a beautiful place with wild flowers and animals. " The air was sweet with the breath of many
apple orchards and the meadows sloped away in the distance to horizon mists of pearl and purple;
while the little birds sang as if it were the only day of summer in all the year." If the setting
weren't so lively, not many of the events would happen. An example would be when Anne goes
through a "haunted" forest with her friend Diana. This causes them to come together as
really good friends and they have to keep each other company to get off the matter that the forest is
haunted. They become really close through out the book. The way the author describes the setting
seems to be an important period in history. Also, the way she describes her school, what the teachers
teach, the dresses the girls wear, the things they use at school, and there were many other hints. The
problems and conflicts in the book were also a hint that helped me decide it was a historical fiction
book. All the problems seemed realistic to that time period. Such as the teacher had to teach the
whole class, and now, we have many teachers teaching many classes. I really liked the book. It was
very enjoyable to read. I would recommend it to my friends, because I think they

Character Analysis Of Anne Of The Island
Anne of the Island, by L. M. Montgomery is a story about Anne Shirley going off to college, and
deciding who she was going to marry. The story is primarily set in Kingsport, the town around her
college, and Green Gables, her childhood home, during a time frame when it was very important for
girls to get married. Anne is the main character, but there are several additional key characters in the
story including: Marilla, her mother figure, who adopted Anne when she was eleven years old;
Charlie Sloane, who desperately wanted Anne to notice him; Gilbert Blythe, Anne's old school
friend, who came to college with her to become a doctor; and Royal Gardener, also known as Roy,
who became close friends with her while she was at college. When Anne first arrived at Redmond
College, she was thankful to have her friends at her side, especially Prissy Grant. Prissy thankfully
knew her way around town, and as she and Anne started to look around the city, they made a new
friend, Philippa Gordon. Phillipa couldn't make up her mind on anything, except that she was going
to marry someone wealthy to support her extravagant life style. Philippa had good intentions, and
though she was slightly annoying at times, Anne immediately befriended her. When Anne was home
for summer break, she received her first proposal, from Billy Andrews, whom she didn't even know
that well. Anne declined as politely as possible. It wasn't long before her next proposal came along,
this time from Charlie Sloane. Anne had never liked Charlie Sloane that much, and again she
refused as politely as she could. Soon, Anne received her next proposal, which was from Gilbert
Blythe, and that was a morning she'd never forget. Up until that point Anne and Gilbert had been
great friends, but Anne didn't believe she truly loved him. Anne was heartbroken when she found
that she must refuse him. She once again declined as politely as she could, but Gilbert was
heartbroken. Anne begged him not change anything because of her refusal, but Gilbert knew that
things could never be the same again after that, and he told her so. Anne too was heartbroken over
losing a good friend, and she was beginning to wonder if that was all she'd lost. Time passed, and
Anne was

Popular Shows During The Golden Age Of Theatre
Beginning towards the end of this time period (1943), and continuing on through the next period of
American theatre, is known as the golden age of theatre. Shows during this time period tended to be
a bit showier than in other periods focusing more on technical and design elements, while still
maintaining a story. During the golden age of theatre many of the most popular musicals were
produced.
Some of the most popular shows take the form of musicals during this era.
Popular musicals include: The Wizard of Oz, Oklahoma. Although musicals may now be the most
popular part of Broadway, during its initial experiments it seems that producers were skeptical about
its commercial potential. Many of the musicals produced are still popular to this day,

The History Of Musicals On Stage Is Broad And Extensive. There
The history of musicals on stage is broad and extensive. There are many different histories of stage
musicals: French operettas, Grecian plays, and Roman comedies are just a few. However, I am
going to focus on American musicals. The musical that many Americans are familiar with has its
roots in the French and Viennese operettas of the 1800s, but take their comic style from American
Variety and Minstrel Shows, which led to Vaudeville and Burlesque shows. Known to be the first
American musical, "The Black Crook", produced in 1866, proved how profitable the musical theater
could be in the United States. After that the American musical really burst forth, with full–length
burlesque shows and British imports of musicals, like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The movie "Singing in the Rain" (1952) even offered a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood in the
late 1920s where the focus was on the transition from silent films to "talkies". From the beginning,
audiences embraced screen musicals with tremendous enthusiasm, with "The Jazz Singer" (1927)
bringing in a slew of newcomer audiences as well as the usual stage musical goers. Even though the
stock market crash of 1929 caused almost a third of movies theaters in the U.S. to shut down, the
industry survived (but barely), because the public would use the few pennies they had to go see a
film that would make them forget the Depression for an hour and a half. Because of this, film
musicals attempted to provide happy and uplifting types of musicals, but they were not extremely
successful. Fast forward to 1933, when the Warner Bros. Studios gave audiences dance–infused
musicals, including "Forty–Second Street", where Busby Berkeley took his reputation and
experience as a dance director for several Broadway shows and helped rebuild film musicals'
rapport. Due to the fact that, in the 1940s, America was fully focused on World War II in one way or
another, "Yankee Doodle Dandy" was produced in 1942 by Warner Bros. Studios, and was a musical
biography of George M. Cohan, "The Man Who Owned Broadway". This musical highlighted the
American patriotism and values that many

The Wiz Play Analysis
In December, I watched the televised play of The Wiz, that aired on NBC. While I have mixed
emotions about this play, itself, I have a better appreciation and understanding about how a play
should be presented now that I have researched the history of american musical theatre, and that is
unity of the story being told, thru song, dance, and performance.
American Musical Theatre is a form of art that tells a story through songs, dialogue, acting and
dance. The different types of musicals includes ballad opera, operetta, musical comedy, straight
musical, rock musical, vaudeville, and burlesque.
Opera is a type of drama that was entirely sung. Madame Butterfly is an example of an opera. An

The Brook is considered the first work that accomplished bringing all of these elements together,
separating the musical from the musical comedy. The two major branches of the american musical
theatre are the musical play and musical comedy. Rodgers and Hammerstein, creators of Oklahoma,
became the most important contributors to the musical play form. They produced more plays that
had social thought that led the way for others to follow. Rodgers and Hammerstein recognized the
struggle in America and elsewhere for minorities civil rights had grown, they and many other
creators used the musicals to try and normalize social toleration and urged racial harmony with
works like Finian's Rainbow and South Pacific. As a theme, tolerance, has continued to be an

Musical Theatre History
The collaboration of musical theatre combines the drama aspect and plots of stage plays while
adding musical components. The plot and a variety of emotions including love, passion, anger,
sadness, and humor, are all presented through words and music. Musical theatre has changed
tremendously over time, from operas to orchestras to full fledged plays. However, from the
beginning until now the art form has carried a great influence in the world of performance. This
essay will explore the history of musical theatre from birth until now.
The ancient Greeks and Roman's had plays and comedies that contained music and dance routines.

This, and other British ballad operas, ballets and pantomimes, formed the majority of musicals
offered on American stages in the beginning of the 1800's. The roots of the music we know today
can be dated back to the French and Viennese operettas. Operettes are light musical comedies that
would often provide broad satire and wit to the stage, combined with bright melodies and high
energy. These would be the blueprint for all musical theatre to come. The Black Crook was the first
piece to fit modern musicals. The play premiered in 1866 in New York City and was a staggering
success. Once the modern musical was developed there was more opportunity for theoretical
advances. Broadway saw its fair share of musicals during the 1890's and the number continued to
grow during the 20th century. The theatre experienced a boom in business with the start of World
War I; given the devastation of the battlefield audiences flocked to the stages in order to get some
escapism. As the 20th century continued musical theatre began to grow in popularity and quality.
The public ruled heavily in favor of musicals, so the 1980s brought a succession of long–running
"Brit hits" to Broadway, such as Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon.

Hamilton Musical
Is Hamilton the Best Musical in Over 40 Years? For many years, people have been watching
musicals and plays for most of their teenage to adult life. Most musicals are well known for just
their catchy songs, but have you ever seen one with catchy songs, brilliance, and the power to move
you in emotional and spiritual ways? Well, Hamilton, a musical written by Lin– Manuel Miranda
has all of that and more. Most people would argue that other musicals are better, but where are you
going to find one with brains and talent, one that teaches, and is world widely moving by its positive
effective role in racism. The musical Hamilton is convivial and it is all around amazing. Hamilton

Although Paulson, Kaplan, and Schussler have very good points about Hamilton, there are some
unfortunate things about the musical. Rebecca Onion author of, "A Hamilton Skeptic on Why the
Show Isn't as Revolutionary as it Seems" says, "It's still white history. And no amount of casting
people of color disguises the fact they're erasing people of color from the actual narrative."
Although Hamilton plays a part in making colored men and women happy, some people see that
nothing really changes the fact they added different races in the musical. In Hamilton, if you listen
closely to the words they sing there is a lot of foul language in it. With that being said, it eliminates
the opportunity for little kids to enjoy let alone watch the musical. Another reason why Hamilton
has an unfortunate twist to it is because of the reflections that Alexander Hamilton puts on the men
he is fighting against, making people think that everything was their fault. This is a problem because
of certain people watching the play, they might be for the men he and his army were going against.
Despite the setbacks of Hamilton, you can learn from this play without even being aware of

The Great Gatsby: A New Musical
If I could come up with a new musical, it would be based on "The Great Gatsby". I would base it off
of this book because there is a combination of love and tragedy while there would be scenes that
would include singing and dancing as well. I think it would work so well because of the time it takes
place and the music and dancing would add a lot of support to the plot. If there were singing and
dancing, the audience would see more into the minds of the characters and get a better
understanding of their emotions and the love between some of the characters. With the love that
Gatsby has for Daisy and his way of fighting for her love, it would make a very good play with a lot
of deep and emotional music that would highlight his devotion to

Hamilton Vs The Lion King
There are few shows in the history of Broadway and musical theatre that can claim to have ever had
the popularity and mass intrigue as Lin–Manuel Miranda's smash hit, historical musical Hamilton.
The two–hour rap based musical tells the story of America's founding father Alexander Hamilton
from his immigration to New York to rise in power amongst the first presidential cabinet and
ultimate death at the hands of a former ally. Gaining support from celebrities and President Obama
only furthered the popularity of the musical that continues to boast being sold out over a year in

After all, shouldn't the surge of new audience be able to fill up the empty seats in other shows? This
is unfortunately not the case. As explained by several producers, sheer cost from popularity may be
bringing down audience attendance. "The top price is now $850, but the headlines trumpet scalper
prices of $5,000 and up. And it appears that people want to see 'Hamilton' so much, they're willing
to pay those prices for seats months, even a year, in advance. What they're not willing to do is to
spend big on 'Hamilton' and see something else in the meantime" (Riedel). This type of splurging
behavior has left other shows in the dark and unable to fill seats forcing them to close. The most
prominent example being Shuffle Along, which despite featuring one of the most well known
actresses on Broadway, Audra McDonald, closed after only a few months (Playbill). The sweeping
change is most noticeable to the majority of the public however, through the Annual Tony Awards.
While the nominations have proven to be fairly spread across the board of shows, the sweeping wins
of Hamilton have changed the way in which producers seek to advertise and attract ticket buyers. So
why large budget productions have been able to afford the costs of added print materials, smaller
less popular productions have resorted to more consumer based TV ads

experienced all of the joys, pain and hardship of living the pioneer life. She decided to write about
her experiences later in life, and those writings became famous for providing a window into what
life was like then. This paper will detail the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her contributions to

of analytic philosophy, while, for the most part, regarding behavioral scientific hopes as vain, hold
views that are, in other respects, strongly behaviorists"(Hauser 1). In the middle of the twentieth
century the ordinary language behaviorist movement was strongly covered by Ryle and

It is not merely an assemblage of particular mistakes. It is one big mistake and a mistake of a special
kind. It is, namely, a category mistake"(Ryle 26). Ryle's thesis in The Concept of Mind is that the
official doctrine has key principles that "are unsound and that conflict with the whole body of what
we know about minds when we are not speculating about them"(Ryle 23). Laid out, the official
doctrine retain that every person has a body and a mind, that they are normally "harnessed" together
and that after death of a body the mind may continue to function and exists. Cartesian theory
summarized; embraces that volitional acts of the body are caused by volitionl acts of the mind thus
mental acts determine physical acts. Ryle thought the 'official theory' was absurd or bitter like, and
labels it "the dogma of the Ghost in the Machine". A great portion of Ryle's argument is pointed
toward a "category mistake". These mistakes that Ryle makes note "The mistakes were made by
people who did not know how to wield the concepts University, division and team–spirit. Their
puzzles arose from inability to use certain items the English vocabulary"(27). This dualist doctrine
formed a polar opposition between the mind and body. Ryle states that the official doctrine as a
category mistake; "It represents the facts of mental life as if they belonged to one logical type or
category (or range of types or categories), when they actually belong to another"(26). Meaning mind

Pearl Harbor Case Study
5c. Describe the opening moves of each side.
How did the attacking forces move their units across the line of departure?
The attacking forces, 2nd Battalion Raiders, moved their forces through the line of departure via
submarine and rubber boat. The USS Argonaut (SM–1)(EX–V4) and USS Nautilus (SS–168)(EX–
V6) transported rubber inflatable motor boats to the Makin Atoll (Carlson's Marine Raiders: Makin
Island 1942, Gordon L. Rottman 24–25). The transit of the troops took around 9 days from Pearl
Harbor due to its winding path to avoid obvious detection. Submarines held position within 500 yds
of the reef line to deploy troops and rubber boats. The rubber boats were held within the external
torpedo–storage of the submarines along with weapons and supplies for the mission (Rottman 43).
The twelve rubber boats from the Argonaut traveled towards the Nautilus, with it's eight boats
joining them, and continued towards the island. Company A (Carlson's Group) had landed on Beach
"Z" (actual) instead of Beach "Y" (planned) which was an improvement since they're closer to the
target. The Raiders made it to land but some boats got capsized causing the spread of weapons and
supplies along the beach, or separated from the group. Peatross' group that was separated from the
main body had advanced towards objective despite lack of numbers.
How did the defending forces react to the attack?
The natives of the land, that were supposedly working for the Japanese, had welcomed and
hospitalized the Raiders. False information had been given to them, though, when Raiders inquired
of Japanese personnel (Rottman 46–47). The Japanese soldiers had seemingly anticipated the attack
or had been aware of it with no reports of the natives. Japanese soldiers had been deployed close to
where the path and position of the target of the Raiders (Rottman 47). This was most likely due to
the panic friendly fire shots by Raiders which had occurred frequently throughout the Raider's
presence. The Japanese had automobiles and special weaponry, such as flamethrowers, machine
guns, etc. to use on the island against the Raiders as well. The Japanese had also placed
camouflaged snipers amongst the palms in advance to pick off any hiding or unprepared Raider

One critical response by Edmund Wilson regarded the Governess as hallucinatory. Suggesting that
the ghosts she saw were so detailed that they were of her own imagining. "The governess is viewed
as an unreliable narrator, either neurotic or actually insane; and the children are considered either
uncorrupted or corrupted by the treatment of the governess herself (Henry James, The Turn of the
Screw – Introduction)." He further goes on to suggest that, "...the governess is a neurotic spinster
whose repressed passion for her employer, the children's bachelor uncle, causes her to hallucinate."
Wilson took a very Freudian approach to his critical response of The Turn of the Screw, for when
Wilson was reviewing it psychology was all the rage in 1934.
Each writer of critical analysis for this story seems to oppose the others. Some people believe it to
be a battle of good and evil, while others suggest that it was the Governess who was corrupt, and yet
still others who believe that the Governess was truly saving the children.
One critical analysis of The Turn of the Screw comes to us from Robert Heilman who took the good
vs. evil view. Heilman suggest that the children are representative of good and the ghosts of evil.
The Governess' description of the children indicates their purity and goodness, referring to them
repeatedly as beautiful and even angelic or

Family Origin Theory In Anne Of Green Gables
Within the movie Anne of Green Gables there is a compelling demonstration of the Family Origin
theory. As Anne Shirley grows up and becomes married she is influenced by the "parents" who
adopted her. As she is adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert (who are siblings) when she is
eleven years old, she acquires attributes from each of them that are carried on throughout her life.
Although she was adopted as a young teenager she never truly had a family to begin with so her
adoption into this family became her "Family of Origin." The boldness and directness Anne
developed came from her mother Marilla whereas her kind, giving, and hardworking attributes came
from her father Matthew. Her father Matthew created a memory in her life as he died when she was
only sixteen. This event impacted her life immensely as she tried to live like he would. These
qualities and memories carried over into her career as a teacher as well as into her marriage with
Gilbert Blythe.
The Family of Origin Theory impacts many individuals as they carry on the attributes found in the
family they originated from. According to the Figure 11.1 in the Marriages and Families textbook,
Anne's family would most likely be classified as a structurally connected family. This theory
encompasses everything from talents, attitudes, values, and their future relationships. Anne Shirley
is a good example of how her family influenced her behavior and choices as she grew older.
As a teacher Anne Shirley encountered many events where she exhibited kindness and courtesy just
as her father did. She gave respect even to the youngest of the students when they were bullied and
picked on during school as well as showing respect in disciplining the bully. She found value in
each of them just as Matthew Cuthbert had in those around him. Anne was also a bold and direct
teacher because of the discipline that came from her mother Marilla. She often stood up for her
students when they felt misunderstood or unwanted. Anne's Family of Origin allowed her to become
a better teacher because of her experiences in her family growing up.
As a young child growing up with Matthew and Marilla, Anne began life with a temper and couldn't
stop accusing others of hurting her and making

Elf Battle and Gwyndor
A long time ago, in a land far, far away from this land we know, there was a land called Gwyndor, a
place where all kinds of life existed. Men, Dwarves, Elves and other creatures lived in this
mysterious land. However, Gwyndor was not all a place of peace and prosperity, far off near the
borders of the east, there was a land called Azurg, a land where the sun forbid to shine and simply
setting foot in the land drains the life right out of you if you were not strong enough. Right in the
center of Azurg there was a dark and gloomy empire filled with hundreds of thousands of fang
bearing, fearsome creatures who crafted crude weapons out of metal they gained from fallen
warriors whom they slayed, but in the center of the empire there was a lone tower, and in this tower
there was a conjurer of dark magic whom no man had ever seen, for once you saw him, you never
escaped with your life. This sorcerer remained nameless because no one could describe him because
no one ever got a look at him before his or her time was ended. No one ever knew what that creature
was doing up in his tower but one day nearly fifty years ago this good world figured it out. One day
the sorcerer released darkness over all the land of Gwyndor, all the villages and towns of Gwyndor
were destroyed and none who stood up to him succeeded. However on one fateful day all the
inhabitants of Gwyndor came together, Men, Elves, and Dwarves marched onto the border of Azurg.

Grease Music Differences
Musicals have been around for many years, but one of the most notable is Grease. It is has become
known throughout the entire world. With Grease being a phenomenal musical, FOX decided to
perform a live version back in 2016, 38 years after the original musical. There was many difference
in both versions due to one being a movie and the other a live performance. It is one of kind, which
lead to many people arguing that the original is better. Factors that contribute to the debate are the
cast, songs, and set design. All in all, people respect the live version because it is hard to pull off in
one take. The characters in the two cast were portrayed similarity. Sandy Olsson stood out to me the
most because in the live version she is not from Australia instead of Ohio, which means she would
not have an accent. This was most likely done because it would be harder for the actor to pull off the
accent throughout the entire show. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Grease songs specifically, "You're the one that I want", is known from different age groups. The
song lyrics and concept stayed the same. It was most likely done because they did not want to
change it because that scene had the most success. Many argue the music should never change
because it will not attract a new audience if that is their goal. Betty Rizzo, sung a song, "Look at
me", which included an Italian curse word but it was replaced with another line in the live version.
There were also changes in who sang what song. For example, "Those Magic Changes" is being
played as background music for them to be dancing and in the live performance, it is being sung by
a T–bird, Doody. In the film, "Freddy My Love" is played on the jukebox and in the live version it
was sung by the Pink Ladies. This was done because it would create a more intimate moment with
the audience watching. The live performance also includes a new solo for Frenchie to demonstrate

Quotes For Eat Pray Love
Eat Pray Love
I have read the book named Eat Pray Love by Elisabeth Gilbert. The book has 346 pages and it was
published in Great Britain 2006.
Elizabeth M. Gilbert was born on July 18 1969. She is an American author from Waterbury,
Connecticut.
She grew up on a small family Christmas tree farm with no neighbors and no television. When
Elisabeth and her older sister moved to New York they entertained themselves by writing plays and
books.
Elisabeth has been working as a cook, a waitress, and a magazine employee. Gilberts best known
book is Eat Pray Love which spent from year 2010 199 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller
list. She has also written short books, and some other known books by her are her first book

Elisabeth is a very nice person, thoughtful and probably very funny. She has blond hair and is
beautiful and has a curvy body. She loves food, meditation and traveling. She has been a writer for a
long time. She is 35 years old in the end of the book. She lives her life now finally as she wants to
and has finally found a balance in her life. I can't really find any things she dislikes because she is
such a nice person.
I think the book was good. It was kind of dramatic. She told about her life while traveling which is
probably really nice. The text was sometimes a bit hard to read, but for most of the time it was really
interesting. I wouldn't really suggest the book to a 15 year old girl, but maybe for plus 20 years old
womans, because this Woman tells about her life and there is many things I don't maybe understand
or that doesn't fit my life right now. But I don't mean that the book wasn't good because it was really
interesting and well written. I would give to the book a 5/5, but it was maybe a little bit too mature
to me, so I give it a

Essay on Gilbert Ryle’s The Concept of Mind
Gilbert Ryle's The Concept of Mind
Gilbert Ryle's The Concept of Mind (1949) is a critique of the notion that the mind is distinct from
the body, and is a rejection of the philosophical theory that mental states are distinct from physical
states. Ryle argues that the traditional approach to the relation of mind and body (i.e., the approach
which is taken by the philosophy of Descartes) assumes that there is a basic distinction between
Mind and Matter. According to Ryle, this assumption is a basic 'category–mistake,' because it
attempts to analyze the relation betwen 'mind' and 'body' as if they were terms of the same logical
category. Furthermore, Ryle argues that traditional Idealism makes a basic 'category–mistake' by

There are no mental processes which are distinct from intelligent acts. The operations of the mind
are not merely represented by intelligent acts, but are the same as intelligent acts. Thus, an act of
remembering, dreaming, knowing, or willing is not merely a clue to some hidden mental process or
intellectual operation, it is how that mental process or intellectual operation is defined. A logical
proposition is not merely a clue to a particular mode of reasoning, it is that mode of reasoning.
Ryle rejects the doctrine that the will is a faculty within the mind, and the doctrine that volitions are
mental processes which the human body transforms into physical acts. Ryle explains that this
doctrine is an example of the myth that mental acts are distinct from physical acts, and of the myth
that there is a mental world which is distinct from the physical world. This doctrine of separation
between mind and body is referred to by Ryle as 'the dogma of the ghost in the machine.' Ryle
argues that there is no ghostly, invisible entity called 'the mind' inside a mechanical apparatus called
'the body.' The workings of the mind are not an independent mechanism which governs the
workings of the body. The workings of the mind are not distinct from the actions of the body, but are
conceptualized as a way of explaining the actions of the body.
Ryle argues that, according to the traditional theory of the mind, mental acts are regarded as causing

The World of Musical Theatre
Music can be traced back to the beginning of humanity. It has been an essential and crucial part of
human society and its development. In the sense of Musical Theatre, it is referred to the art of telling
stories through or with songs. This art can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Greeks (5th
century BC), where music was used to accompany their stage works. It has been said that Sophocles
composed his own music to accompany his own stage plays. In Greek theatre, a "Greek Chorus"
was used in the play to comment on the actions. They were a part of the plot of the show, but no
musical solos were present. The chorus was used also to be the "conscious" of the audience or as a
"sounding board" for the main characters.
Using the traditions of Greek Theatre, the Romans later replicated and expanded on the idea. The
expansion evolved into the use of orchestral accompaniment for songs and dances in 3rd Century
BC Plautus comedies. This later progressed in the Middle Ages with traveling minstrels and
traveling performers performing popular songs and slapstick comedy. Religious Drama's became
popular in the 12th and 13th centuries, combining church chants as a liturgical teaching tools such
as The Play of Herod and The Play of Daniel.
By the time of Renaissance, the Religious Dramas have developed into an Italian tradition called
commedia dell'arte where clowns improvise their ways through familiar stories. From there, Opera
Buffa derived from the

Summary: The Great American Musical
Musicals, Not Only a Broadway Phenomenon Being that documentaries and musicals are both a
way of addressing concerns happening in the political, economic or social culture of a certain
region, it would seem that there would be many documented cases of how documentaries have
impacted the American musical. However, not many results seem to surface when searching for this.
For the layperson who does a quick search and does not dig deeper into different ways to search, it
may seem that there is only one result: Broadway The Great American Musical by Michael Cantor.
Thankfully, that is not the case. There are other sources with information about the film form of the
documentary and musicals. While it is not a musical, a predecessor to documentaries that contribute
to or contain the subject of musicals is the 1959 film Jazz on a Summer's Day. Since jazz is seen as a
uniquely "American–based musical form," it can be seen as a forerunner to American musicals,
especially since the cinema would use jazz for interludes and these were often "backstage musicals."
Ever since this documentary was made, jazz documentaries have continued to be made up to this
day (Meeker). While a connection has been clearly pointed out, with the fact that jazz
documentaries are still made, it makes sense that they would naturally be linked to ... Show more

original Lansdowne is not in the museum. The original one was done in 1796. The name of the
portrait comes from William Petty, the first Maqguis of Lansdowne who was a British supporter of
American independence. Gilbert Stuart painted numerous copies of this famous piece, one of which
was made for Ms. William Bingham of Pennsylvania and another is the one displayed at the

Pros And Cons For English Colonization
Terifay 1
Sarah Terifay
Mr. Wade
United States History
September 16, 2017
Motivations for English Colonization Greed was one of the leading causes to the English
exploration of the Americas. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Spain took the lead in exploring
and setting up colonies much in North America which in turn caused the English to become wary of
a possible new powerhouse and threat. Along with a fear of threat was also a want to inhabit the new
land and thus gain trading partners, find treasure, and expand before Spain had a chance to flood
more of the vast new land. Elizabeth rapidly set out to build a colony, first giving a charter to Sir
Humphrey Gilbert, Sir Walter Raleigh, no such English colony would exist until James I came to
rule (Shi and Tindall 48–49). Eventually, Religious tension, a want for gold, and a desire for new
goods led the English to expand and configure colonies in the New World. After Elizabeth's death,
the Church of England went into a time of crisis. Many people found the rituals, bishops, and
elaborate costumes and jewels to be unnecessary to religion. Along with this, many people started to
view bishops of the church as dictatorial leaders who should have no part in government. The
Puritans were one of the first groups to question the showy form of church which would eventually
lead them to the new world due to being banished by the king for not following the basic principles.
The Pilgrims were another group that wanted that would

Little House On The Prairie
Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series has been praised as a classic and beloved story of manifest
destiny and one family's travels west. Though typically classified as children's fiction, Ingalls
Wilder presents the books as a memoir of her own childhood; the books are written in third person,
but the protagonist is a girl named Laura who has very specific memories of her young life traveling
around the Midwest. In Little House on the Prairie, young Laura and her family leave their cozy
home in the woods of Wisconsin to travel into Indian Territory near Independence, Kansas. Pa and
Ma are fiercely independent and determined to succeed in their new, completely wild surroundings.

When leaving Wisconsin, the Ingalls must say goodbye to all of their family that lives close by,
resigning themselves to writing yearly letters instead. In this situation, the nuclear family chooses to
assert its individualism by leaving both their family and the newly crowded woods. Libertarianism
largely glorifies the free will of the individual, thus the choice to break free and become independent
certainly espouses the ideology. The family continues its independent streak as Ma, Pa, Mary, Laura,
and Baby Carrie construct their new house and lives on the Kansas prairie. They travel with only
their most important belongings but, for the most part, must build an entirely new house and
furnishings. This task, of course, is presented as incredibly easy. When the family finally arrives at
an acceptable plot of land, the land is completely empty; however, Pa hauls logs from the creek
bottoms and "all by himself, he built the house three logs high" (58). The family must also make all
new furniture (luckily, Pa is a skilled carpenter), put in a puncheon floor, install a working fireplace
and chimney, hunt for their own food, and trade furs in Independence to buy a plow for the next
farming season. The family's success can certainly be attributed to luck or Pa and Ma's skills, but
may also be an outcome of their fierce independence and determination to be on their own. The
most striking example of independence comes when Pa decides to put a real roof on their home,

Narrative Style of Little House on The Prairie

and Patty were rolling, Pa pulled all the grass from a large, round space of ground. When the space
was clear of grass, Pa laid a handful of dry grass in its center. From the creek bottoms he brought an
armful of twigs and dead wood. He laid small twigs and larger twigs and then the wood on the
handful of dry grass, and he lighted the grass. Then Pa brought water from the creek, while Mary
and Laura helped Ma get supper" (28, 29).
Another part of the story that Laura describes very deeply was when Pa built the log cabin, chimney,
and the well digging. You knew every step and how he did it and what he used to make everything.
If a person wanted to, they could probably build a log cabin or dig a well by her descriptions.
Laura enjoys describing the way the prairie looks each day because she loves it so much. She pays
close attention to the details of the flowers and grasses and how the wind is blowing. The animals
on the prairie are described often also since the prairie was full of wildlife back then. You often

different than the weather in Wisconsin. "Day after day was hotter then the day before. The wind

The Concept of Intelligence Essay
The Concept of Intelligence
ABSTRACT: Gilbert Ryle's dispositional analysis of the concept of intelligence makes the error of
assimilating intelligence to the category of dispositional or semi–dispositional concepts. Far from
being a dispositional concept, intelligence is an episodic concept that refers neither to dispositions
nor to 'knowing how,' but to a fashion or style of proceeding whose significance is adverbial. Being
derivative from the function of the adverb 'intelligently,' the concept of intelligence does not have
essential reference to specific verbs but rather to the manner or style of proceeding of nearly any
verb that is descriptive of the proceedings of an agent. Intelligence– words are expressive of a
manner of doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dualist's reaction was to withdraw from the dispositional analysis and to claim that "
intelligence " can only make sense when it is ultimately linked to an alternative concept which
presumably has reference to a "process" (the existence of which may be ascertained by a subjective
avowal: intent, deliberation, reflective choice, etc.).
Whether this maneuver avoids the Rylean critique is subject to serious doubt. Each new term may
itself have a problem concerning the "metaphysical" status of its referent: whether it is a physical or
a "spiritual" process.
Another problem with this approach is that it often makes the concept of intelligence dependent on
factors that may have no more than a casual relation to its meaning: a contextual connection, for
example.
While a dispositional analysis of intelligence would effectively rescue it from entrapment inside
"the ghost in the machine" it would fail to do the concept the justice that the dualist seeks for it, and
that is to make the observation that it appears to be more an episodic than a dispositional concept.
It is in this connection that some philosophers take a critical view of Ryle's analysis. Peter Thomas
Geach, for instance, claims that reports of mental acts are categorical and are not hypothetical or
semi–hypothetical statements about overt behavior. He believes the dispositional account of
psychological concepts to be on a level with the statement that opium puts people to sleep

Broadway musicals: The Portrayal of Women through the Decades
Broadway was one of the first forms of entertainment. Before there were television programs, or
movies, there was Broadway. Broadway originated in New York in 1750, when actor–manager
Walter Murray built a theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street. A musical would show
about once every weekend. The shows were very male based, and would commonly show a
relationship between young boys and their fathers. Women were slowly integrated into Broadway,
and as society changed its point of view on women, so did theatre.
The first strictly female–based shows were released in the 1950's. These musicals attracted more
female–based audience members and ticket sales rose exponentially. Musicals such as The Sound of
Music and My Fair Lady showed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is already showing how women and men were "supposed" to act in that time period. It showed
that men were superior and that a young woman was supposed to be aloof, and not bold.
Males have a significantly easier time training and controlling their voices than women do, which is
part of the reason that female–based musicals became so popular. "On Broadway, although some
female roles are narrow, demeaning, passive, or long–suffering and convey weakness, the performer
sings with incredible strength. Listening to the female singing voice is a more complicated
phenomenon. Visually, the character singing is the passive object of our gaze. But aurally, she is
resonant; her musical speech drowns out everything in range. A singer, more than any other musical
performer, stands before us having wrested the composing voice away from the lyricist and
composer who wrote the score." Said Musicologist Carolyn Abbate (Wolf, p.31)
Furthermore, the complexity of the female voices both alone, in duet, and group, has influenced the
creation and production of numerous female–based musicals over the decades. When thinking of
musical theatre, the most common idea is "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, and boy eventually gets
the girl in the end." This situation is most commonly referred to as, "The original story" The main
reasons for this stereotype are the musicals produced and shown in the 1950's– 70's. When looking

A Brief Note On The Battle Of Tarawa
THE BATTLE OF TARAWA
Geographical location.
Tarawa is an atoll about 2400 miles Southwest of Hawaii. Betio is its largest islet on 3 miles long
and 1/2 miles wide on the west side with an airfield from east to west, with a lagoon bordering
Tarawa to the north with a bordering reef extending offshore around 1,200 yard. The water of the
lagoon was shallower however it was deeper on the south than the north shore which could give a
better landing location.
Tarawa 's military importance was in its strategic position as entrance of United States through the
Central Pacific toward the Philippines
Preceding the Battle
The Allied forces in the Pacific were victorious at Guadal–canal in early 1943 therefore begun
planning for new attacks. Admiral Chester Nimitz developed plans of campaigning across the
Central Pacific forwarded to attacking Japan by moving from one island to another, using each as a
base to attack the next across. Nimitz desired to begin in the Gilbert island , seeking the Marshalls
through the Marians whereby conquering these would make it easy for the forces to bomb Japan on
full scale.
Commander Rear Admiral Keiji Shibasaki of the Japanese garrison realized that if they took control
over Tarawa in the Gilbert island, it could block Allied communications and other supplies with
Hawaii. The Japanese held the islet from 1941– 1943 in the course of World War 2. The battle is
historically recorded to have started on 20th November to the morning of 23rd November

The best of people waits in the shadows, until it is time to come out into the light. I was always the
shy kid in the back of class. I barely spoke to anyone that would approach, and I was so afraid of
others judgment because of the kind of person I am. I may not be the smartest guy in the world, but
I do know quite a bit. After years of hiding in the darkness, afraid of the torment that others may
bring, I finally came into the spotlight. I had found my new home and sanctuary, I had embraced my
love for musical theatre.
When I was just three years old, I had been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, and ADHD. As a
result of having been given this burden to carry with me for the rest of my days, I was always
different than most people would assume me to be. It isn't their fault they assume, nor is it mine, it is
simply a symptom of what is called human. Throughout my life, many people have made
assumptions about me, didn't matter whether or not they were good or bad, they just simply did.
Whenever I had told others about my interests, comic books, games, super heroes, etc, some of them
would return the favor of kindness, and some others would back away with disgust and anguish. As
a result of some of the torture I endured from others, I often hid in the shadows where I felt safe
from the heartlessness of others.
For many years I had refrained from telling others about my interests. I was scared. I didn't know
what others would say. How was I to know if they would accept me

Musical Theatre Comparison Essay
Musicals and Opera are both very similar forms of Musical Theatre that involve singing, acting and
dancing. But they also have important differences. Musicals and Opera differ in the importance of
the words, the number of people attending each year, and the style of music they use. Many people
enjoy both kinds of musical theatre, both in performing them and being in the audience. It is a form
of expression enjoyed by all generations. In musicals the dialogue and the lyrics in songs are
extremely important to getting the message across. Shows are known for their witty one liners and
for telling the story during iconic songs. It would be extremely difficult to understand what is
happening if you watched a musical that was written in another language. This is quite the opposite
from an Opera, the majority of operas are written in Italian, German or French. For someone who

Musical Theatre Research Paper
A musical theatre production generally consists of drama, music, songs, and dancing. These aspects
are what make musical theatre one of the most favored type of drama production.
The difference between a play and a musical play is obviously the input of music and how the story
is told. In plays, the emotions and actions are showcased through words and movement, but in
musical theatre, the content can be expressed through dialogue as well as music and dancing.
Musical theatre has quite an extensive history. They can be dated back to ancient Greece, around the
5th century BCE. However, the most noteworthy period of time, The Golden Age, for musicals was
during the 1940s to the 1960s. Since this was the period right after the economic recession, when
"The American Dream" was coveted, many musicals wrapped their ideas and themes based on it.
During this Golden Age time period, hits from Rodgers and Hammerstein such as The Sound of
Music and The King and I were produced. These pieces are still widely spoken of today. There were
many focuses that the plays were formulated on during specific periods. For example, during the
early 1900s, musicals were often light and humorous, since this was during World ... Show more

One of the oldest forms is known as Opera and Operetta. However, they are not commonly known
as musicals. It does fit into the definition of musical theatre though, since they do combine music,
song, dance, as well as acting into a performance. In Operas, the story is conveyed more through the
song than through dialogue. So, there is less talking and more singing. Operettas are more alike to
musicals. They are considered light operas with acting. Operettas usually have a less serious
message, and go for a humorous approach. They also have more talking than Operas, but not as
much as usual musicals. Since there is more singing than talking, characters in Operas and Operettas
are not as complex as in normal

The Journey of an Orphan to a Young Woman
The Journey of an Orphan to a Young Woman: Imagination is a companion that will always be there
to ease up moments of despair in life. It gives hope that one day the possessions that the heart
desires will be there not too far from reach, or to believe the cruel circumstances life brings upon us
are instead moments of joy. L.M Montgomery demonstrates this skilfully in her work; Anne of
Green Gables. The novel is about a lonely orphaned girl whose only friend is her imagination. Due
to her imagination and the support of her new loving family, she grows into a bright and intelligent
young woman who realizes the potential that life has for her and her tremendously creative mind.
The experiences and expectations that are placed on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However these traits were what helped Anne "stand out" against all the other young behaved girls,
she was different from them and this made her unique. She learned to accept her imperfections and
turn them into talents instead. Identity is what every orphan yearns to have, since not belonging to
anyone steals it away from them. Anne Shirley knew who her parents were, however not being
raised by them she had no identity to be sure of. It was a taint on her that never left her alone. Due
to these circumstances, the journey of Anne Shirley's growth from a loud and obnoxious child to an
elegant and sophisticated young women had many bumps in the road. A situation that portrays her
obnoxious side would be not apologising to Mrs. Lynde and locking herself in the room.
""I shall have to stay here forever then," said Anne mournfully, "because I can't tell Mrs. Lynde I'm
sorry I said those things to her. How can I? I'm NOT sorry. I'm sorry I've vexed you; but I'm GLAD
I told her just what I did. It was a great satisfaction. I can't say I'm sorry when I'm not, can I? I can't
even IMAGINE I'm sorry."" (Montgomery 85)
Although it was her mistake to have such an outburst she still believes what she did was not wrong,
and well deserved on Mrs. Lynde's side. However, on the other hand the way she handles the
accusation of stealing Marilla's amethyst brooch is completely opposite. Although she has not stolen
the brooch, she

Descartes Myth-Gilbert Ryle

  • 1. Descartes Myth-Gilbert Ryle Gilbert Ryle’s The Concept of Mind Gilbert Ryle (1900–76) was a philosopher who taught at Oxford and who made important contributions to the philosophy of mind and to "ordinary language philosophy." His most important writings included Philosophical Arguments (1945), The Concept of Mind (1949), Dilemmas (1954), Plato 's Progress (1966), and On Thinking (1979). The Concept of Mind (1949) is a critique of the notion that the mind is distinct from the body, and it is a rejection of the theory that mental states are separable from physical states. According to Ryle, the classical theory of mind, as represented by Cartesian rationalism, asserts that there is a basic distinction between mind and matter. However, the classical theory makes a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, the mind consists of various abilities or dispositions that explain such behaviors as learning, remembering, knowing, feeling, or willing. However, personal abilities or dispositions are not the same as mental processes or events. To refer to abilities or dispositions as if they are mental occurrences is to make a basic kind of category–mistake. The nature of a person’s motives may be defined by the actions and reactions of that person in various circumstances or situations. The nature of a person 's motives in a particular situation may not necessarily be determined by any hidden mental processes or intellectual acts within that person. Motives may be revealed or explained by a person’s behavior in a situation. Ryle criticizes the theory that the mind is a place where mental images are apprehended, perceived, or remembered. Sensations, thoughts, and feelings do not belong to a mental world distinct from the physical world. Knowledge, memory, imagination, and other abilities or dispositions do not reside "within" the mind as if the mind were a space in which these dispositions could be situated or located. Furthermore, dispositions are not the same as behavioral actions; actions may, however, be explained by dispositions. Dispositions are neither visible nor hidden, because they are not in the same logical category as behavioral actions. Dispositions are not mental processes or intellectual ... • 2. My Musical Theatre Throughout my entire life I have never had any real interest in musical theatre. One time when I was in about 5th grade, my grandfather took me, my brother and my cousin to a showing of the "Nutcracker." Let me tell you, I tried my hardest, I really tried, but I couldn't stay awake for the entire performance. This experience I had put a bad taste in my mouth as for the next several years, I never attended another musical theatre event. One day in the spring, I was going through Golden Bear Advising, and I saw that Berkeley recommended that everyone should listen to the Hamilton soundtrack. I didn't know much about the musical other than that a couple of my friends in my high school's theatre company listened to it. My first thought was that it must be better than the Nutcracker, so I decided I'd give it a chance. About 15 seconds into "Alexander Hamilton" I remember saying out loud, "hmm wow, this bumps!" My first time listening to the soundtrack, I didn't listen to it all the way through, but I was definitely hooked –– I wanted to keep listening. Over the summer, whenever I'd go on long car rides, I'd try to listen to the soundtrack. To be honest, before I listened to the soundtrack, I didn't think that I would like it, simply because I wasn't a fan of musical theatre. However, I was blown away and thoroughly the music, the way in which it was presented and the story that was told. What sticks out to me about the soundtrack is that it kept my attention because at the end ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Anne has been taken in and out of orphanages all her life. Until, one day Matthew Cuthbert and his sister, Miss Marilla Cuthbert, are interested in having a young boy to live with them. They called the orphanage and told them to send the child on the train. He goes to the train station to pick the child up, but to his surprise he found Anne. Anne tells Matthew how she imagines living there would be like. She was so set on staying that Matthew just couldn't leave her at the train station. He takes her to his house, and while on the journey, Anne is enjoying every moment of the beautiful flowered valleys. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She meets a new "bosom" friend Diana, not to mention all the other friends she meets in the book. The setting helps make the story exciting. The setting is at Green Gables. Green Gables is a beautiful place with wild flowers and animals. " The air was sweet with the breath of many apple orchards and the meadows sloped away in the distance to horizon mists of pearl and purple; while the little birds sang as if it were the only day of summer in all the year." If the setting weren't so lively, not many of the events would happen. An example would be when Anne goes through a "haunted" forest with her friend Diana. This causes them to come together as really good friends and they have to keep each other company to get off the matter that the forest is haunted. They become really close through out the book. The way the author describes the setting seems to be an important period in history. Also, the way she describes her school, what the teachers teach, the dresses the girls wear, the things they use at school, and there were many other hints. The problems and conflicts in the book were also a hint that helped me decide it was a historical fiction book. All the problems seemed realistic to that time period. Such as the teacher had to teach the whole class, and now, we have many teachers teaching many classes. I really liked the book. It was very enjoyable to read. I would recommend it to my friends, because I think they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Character Analysis Of Anne Of The Island Anne of the Island, by L. M. Montgomery is a story about Anne Shirley going off to college, and deciding who she was going to marry. The story is primarily set in Kingsport, the town around her college, and Green Gables, her childhood home, during a time frame when it was very important for girls to get married. Anne is the main character, but there are several additional key characters in the story including: Marilla, her mother figure, who adopted Anne when she was eleven years old; Charlie Sloane, who desperately wanted Anne to notice him; Gilbert Blythe, Anne's old school friend, who came to college with her to become a doctor; and Royal Gardener, also known as Roy, who became close friends with her while she was at college. When Anne first arrived at Redmond College, she was thankful to have her friends at her side, especially Prissy Grant. Prissy thankfully knew her way around town, and as she and Anne started to look around the city, they made a new friend, Philippa Gordon. Phillipa couldn't make up her mind on anything, except that she was going to marry someone wealthy to support her extravagant life style. Philippa had good intentions, and though she was slightly annoying at times, Anne immediately befriended her. When Anne was home for summer break, she received her first proposal, from Billy Andrews, whom she didn't even know that well. Anne declined as politely as possible. It wasn't long before her next proposal came along, this time from Charlie Sloane. Anne had never liked Charlie Sloane that much, and again she refused as politely as she could. Soon, Anne received her next proposal, which was from Gilbert Blythe, and that was a morning she'd never forget. Up until that point Anne and Gilbert had been great friends, but Anne didn't believe she truly loved him. Anne was heartbroken when she found that she must refuse him. She once again declined as politely as she could, but Gilbert was heartbroken. Anne begged him not change anything because of her refusal, but Gilbert knew that things could never be the same again after that, and he told her so. Anne too was heartbroken over losing a good friend, and she was beginning to wonder if that was all she'd lost. Time passed, and Anne was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Popular Shows During The Golden Age Of Theatre Beginning towards the end of this time period (1943), and continuing on through the next period of American theatre, is known as the golden age of theatre. Shows during this time period tended to be a bit showier than in other periods focusing more on technical and design elements, while still maintaining a story. During the golden age of theatre many of the most popular musicals were produced. Some of the most popular shows take the form of musicals during this era. • 7. The History Of Musicals On Stage Is Broad And Extensive. There The history of musicals on stage is broad and extensive. There are many different histories of stage musicals: French operettas, Grecian plays, and Roman comedies are just a few. However, I am going to focus on American musicals. The musical that many Americans are familiar with has its roots in the French and Viennese operettas of the 1800s, but take their comic style from American Variety and Minstrel Shows, which led to Vaudeville and Burlesque shows. Known to be the first American musical, "The Black Crook", produced in 1866, proved how profitable the musical theater could be in the United States. After that the American musical really burst forth, with full–length burlesque shows and British imports of musicals, like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movie "Singing in the Rain" (1952) even offered a lighthearted depiction of Hollywood in the late 1920s where the focus was on the transition from silent films to "talkies". From the beginning, audiences embraced screen musicals with tremendous enthusiasm, with "The Jazz Singer" (1927) bringing in a slew of newcomer audiences as well as the usual stage musical goers. Even though the stock market crash of 1929 caused almost a third of movies theaters in the U.S. to shut down, the industry survived (but barely), because the public would use the few pennies they had to go see a film that would make them forget the Depression for an hour and a half. Because of this, film musicals attempted to provide happy and uplifting types of musicals, but they were not extremely successful. Fast forward to 1933, when the Warner Bros. Studios gave audiences dance–infused musicals, including "Forty–Second Street", where Busby Berkeley took his reputation and experience as a dance director for several Broadway shows and helped rebuild film musicals' rapport. Due to the fact that, in the 1940s, America was fully focused on World War II in one way or another, "Yankee Doodle Dandy" was produced in 1942 by Warner Bros. However, from the beginning until now the art form has carried a great influence in the world of performance. This essay will explore the history of musical theatre from birth until now. This, and other British ballad operas, ballets and pantomimes, formed the majority of musicals offered on American stages in the beginning of the 1800's. The roots of the music we know today can be dated back to the French and Viennese operettas. Operettes are light musical comedies that would often provide broad satire and wit to the stage, combined with bright melodies and high energy. These would be the blueprint for all musical theatre to come. The Black Crook was the first piece to fit modern musicals. The play premiered in 1866 in New York City and was a staggering success. Once the modern musical was developed there was more opportunity for theoretical advances. Broadway saw its fair share of musicals during the 1890's and the number continued to grow during the 20th century. The theatre experienced a boom in business with the start of World War I; given the devastation of the battlefield audiences flocked to the stages in order to get some escapism. As the 20th century continued musical theatre began to grow in popularity and quality. The public ruled heavily in favor of musicals, so the 1980s brought a succession of long–running "Brit hits" to Broadway, such as Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon. ... Most musicals are well known for just their catchy songs, but have you ever seen one with catchy songs, brilliance, and the power to move you in emotional and spiritual ways? Well, Hamilton, a musical written by Lin– Manuel Miranda has all of that and more. Most people would argue that other musicals are better, but where are you going to find one with brains and talent, one that teaches, and is world widely moving by its positive effective role in racism. Rebecca Onion author of, "A Hamilton Skeptic on Why the Show Isn't as Revolutionary as it Seems" says, "It's still white history. And no amount of casting people of color disguises the fact they're erasing people of color from the actual narrative." Although Hamilton plays a part in making colored men and women happy, some people see that nothing really changes the fact they added different races in the musical. In Hamilton, if you listen closely to the words they sing there is a lot of foul language in it. With that being said, it eliminates the opportunity for little kids to enjoy let alone watch the musical. Another reason why Hamilton has an unfortunate twist to it is because of the reflections that Alexander Hamilton puts on the men he is fighting against, making people think that everything was their fault. I would base it off of this book because there is a combination of love and tragedy while there would be scenes that would include singing and dancing as well. I think it would work so well because of the time it takes place and the music and dancing would add a lot of support to the plot. If there were singing and dancing, the audience would see more into the minds of the characters and get a better understanding of their emotions and the love between some of the characters. As explained by several producers, sheer cost from popularity may be bringing down audience attendance. "The top price is now $850, but the headlines trumpet scalper prices of $5,000 and up. And it appears that people want to see 'Hamilton' so much, they're willing to pay those prices for seats months, even a year, in advance. What they're not willing to do is to spend big on 'Hamilton' and see something else in the meantime" (Riedel). This type of splurging behavior has left other shows in the dark and unable to fill seats forcing them to close. • 16. Pearl Harbor Case Study 5c. Describe the opening moves of each side. How did the attacking forces move their units across the line of departure? The attacking forces, 2nd Battalion Raiders, moved their forces through the line of departure via submarine and rubber boat. The USS Argonaut (SM–1)(EX–V4) and USS Nautilus (SS–168)(EX– V6) transported rubber inflatable motor boats to the Makin Atoll (Carlson's Marine Raiders: Makin Island 1942, Gordon L. Rottman 24–25). The transit of the troops took around 9 days from Pearl Harbor due to its winding path to avoid obvious detection. Submarines held position within 500 yds of the reef line to deploy troops and rubber boats. The rubber boats were held within the external torpedo–storage of the submarines along with weapons and supplies for the mission (Rottman 43). The twelve rubber boats from the Argonaut traveled towards the Nautilus, with it's eight boats joining them, and continued towards the island. Company A (Carlson's Group) had landed on Beach "Z" (actual) instead of Beach "Y" (planned) which was an improvement since they're closer to the target. The Raiders made it to land but some boats got capsized causing the spread of weapons and supplies along the beach, or separated from the group. Peatross' group that was separated from the main body had advanced towards objective despite lack of numbers. How did the defending forces react to the attack? The natives of the land, that were supposedly working for the Japanese, had welcomed and hospitalized the Raiders. False information had been given to them, though, when Raiders inquired of Japanese personnel (Rottman 46–47). The Japanese soldiers had seemingly anticipated the attack or had been aware of it with no reports of the natives. Japanese soldiers had been deployed close to where the path and position of the target of the Raiders (Rottman 47). This was most likely due to the panic friendly fire shots by Raiders which had occurred frequently throughout the Raider's presence. • 20. Family Origin Theory In Anne Of Green Gables Within the movie Anne of Green Gables there is a compelling demonstration of the Family Origin theory. As Anne Shirley grows up and becomes married she is influenced by the "parents" who adopted her. As she is adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert (who are siblings) when she is eleven years old, she acquires attributes from each of them that are carried on throughout her life. Although she was adopted as a young teenager she never truly had a family to begin with so her adoption into this family became her "Family of Origin." The boldness and directness Anne developed came from her mother Marilla whereas her kind, giving, and hardworking attributes came from her father Matthew. Her father Matthew created a memory in her life as he died when she was only sixteen. This event impacted her life immensely as she tried to live like he would. These qualities and memories carried over into her career as a teacher as well as into her marriage with Gilbert Blythe. The Family of Origin Theory impacts many individuals as they carry on the attributes found in the family they originated from. According to the Figure 11.1 in the Marriages and Families textbook, Anne's family would most likely be classified as a structurally connected family. This theory encompasses everything from talents, attitudes, values, and their future relationships. Anne Shirley is a good example of how her family influenced her behavior and choices as she grew older. As a teacher Anne Shirley encountered many events where she exhibited kindness and courtesy just as her father did. She gave respect even to the youngest of the students when they were bullied and picked on during school as well as showing respect in disciplining the bully. She found value in each of them just as Matthew Cuthbert had in those around him. Anne was also a bold and direct teacher because of the discipline that came from her mother Marilla. She often stood up for her students when they felt misunderstood or unwanted. Anne's Family of Origin allowed her to become a better teacher because of her experiences in her family growing up. Essay on Gilbert Ryle’s The Concept of Mind Gilbert Ryle's The Concept of Mind Gilbert Ryle's The Concept of Mind (1949) is a critique of the notion that the mind is distinct from the body, and is a rejection of the philosophical theory that mental states are distinct from physical states. Ryle argues that the traditional approach to the relation of mind and body (i.e., the approach which is taken by the philosophy of Descartes) assumes that there is a basic distinction between Mind and Matter. According to Ryle, this assumption is a basic 'category–mistake,' because it attempts to analyze the relation betwen 'mind' and 'body' as if they were terms of the same logical category. A logical proposition is not merely a clue to a particular mode of reasoning, it is that mode of reasoning. • 26. The World of Musical Theatre Music can be traced back to the beginning of humanity. It has been an essential and crucial part of human society and its development. In the sense of Musical Theatre, it is referred to the art of telling stories through or with songs. This art can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Greeks (5th century BC), where music was used to accompany their stage works. It has been said that Sophocles composed his own music to accompany his own stage plays. In Greek theatre, a "Greek Chorus" was used in the play to comment on the actions. They were a part of the plot of the show, but no musical solos were present. The chorus was used also to be the "conscious" of the audience or as a "sounding board" for the main characters. Using the traditions of Greek Theatre, the Romans later replicated and expanded on the idea. The expansion evolved into the use of orchestral accompaniment for songs and dances in 3rd Century BC Plautus comedies. This later progressed in the Middle Ages with traveling minstrels and traveling performers performing popular songs and slapstick comedy. Religious Drama's became popular in the 12th and 13th centuries, combining church chants as a liturgical teaching tools such as The Play of Herod and The Play of Daniel. By the time of Renaissance, the Religious Dramas have developed into an Italian tradition called commedia dell'arte where clowns improvise their ways through familiar stories. While it is not a musical, a predecessor to documentaries that contribute to or contain the subject of musicals is the 1959 film Jazz on a Summer's Day. Since jazz is seen as a uniquely "American–based musical form," it can be seen as a forerunner to American musicals, especially since the cinema would use jazz for interludes and these were often "backstage musicals." Ever since this documentary was made, jazz documentaries have continued to be made up to this day (Meeker). While a connection has been clearly pointed out, with the fact that jazz documentaries are still made, it makes sense that they would naturally be linked to ... Whether someone is watching the musical, preforming in the musical, or working behind the scenes of the musical, it really turns out to be a magical experience all around. • 30. Pros And Cons For English Colonization Terifay 1 Sarah Terifay Mr. Wade United States History September 16, 2017 Motivations for English Colonization Greed was one of the leading causes to the English exploration of the Americas. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Spain took the lead in exploring and setting up colonies much in North America which in turn caused the English to become wary of a possible new powerhouse and threat. Along with a fear of threat was also a want to inhabit the new land and thus gain trading partners, find treasure, and expand before Spain had a chance to flood more of the vast new land. Elizabeth rapidly set out to build a colony, first giving a charter to Sir Humphrey Gilbert, Sir Walter Raleigh, no such English colony would exist until James I came to rule (Shi and Tindall 48–49). Eventually, Religious tension, a want for gold, and a desire for new goods led the English to expand and configure colonies in the New World. After Elizabeth's death, the Church of England went into a time of crisis. Many people found the rituals, bishops, and elaborate costumes and jewels to be unnecessary to religion. Along with this, many people started to view bishops of the church as dictatorial leaders who should have no part in government. The Puritans were one of the first groups to question the showy form of church which would eventually lead them to the new world due to being banished by the king for not following the basic principles. The Pilgrims were another group that wanted that would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Little House On The Prairie Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series has been praised as a classic and beloved story of manifest destiny and one family's travels west. Though typically classified as children's fiction, Ingalls Wilder presents the books as a memoir of her own childhood; the books are written in third person, but the protagonist is a girl named Laura who has very specific memories of her young life traveling around the Midwest. In Little House on the Prairie, young Laura and her family leave their cozy home in the woods of Wisconsin to travel into Indian Territory near Independence, Kansas. Pa and Ma are fiercely independent and determined to succeed in their new, completely wild surroundings. Though Little House on the Prairie seems to honestly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When leaving Wisconsin, the Ingalls must say goodbye to all of their family that lives close by, resigning themselves to writing yearly letters instead. In this situation, the nuclear family chooses to assert its individualism by leaving both their family and the newly crowded woods. Libertarianism largely glorifies the free will of the individual, thus the choice to break free and become independent certainly espouses the ideology. The family continues its independent streak as Ma, Pa, Mary, Laura, and Baby Carrie construct their new house and lives on the Kansas prairie. They travel with only their most important belongings but, for the most part, must build an entirely new house and furnishings. This task, of course, is presented as incredibly easy. When the family finally arrives at an acceptable plot of land, the land is completely empty; however, Pa hauls logs from the creek bottoms and "all by himself, he built the house three logs high" (58). The family must also make all new furniture (luckily, Pa is a skilled carpenter), put in a puncheon floor, install a working fireplace and chimney, hunt for their own food, and trade furs in Independence to buy a plow for the next farming season. The family's success can certainly be attributed to luck or Pa and Ma's skills, but may also be an outcome of their fierce independence and determination to be on their own. The most striking example of independence comes when Pa decides to put a real roof on their home, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Concept of Intelligence Essay The Concept of Intelligence ABSTRACT: Gilbert Ryle's dispositional analysis of the concept of intelligence makes the error of assimilating intelligence to the category of dispositional or semi–dispositional concepts. Far from being a dispositional concept, intelligence is an episodic concept that refers neither to dispositions nor to 'knowing how,' but to a fashion or style of proceeding whose significance is adverbial. Being derivative from the function of the adverb 'intelligently,' the concept of intelligence does not have essential reference to specific verbs but rather to the manner or style of proceeding of nearly any verb that is descriptive of the proceedings of an agent. Intelligence– words are expressive of a manner of doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dualist's reaction was to withdraw from the dispositional analysis and to claim that " intelligence " can only make sense when it is ultimately linked to an alternative concept which presumably has reference to a "process" (the existence of which may be ascertained by a subjective avowal: intent, deliberation, reflective choice, etc.). Whether this maneuver avoids the Rylean critique is subject to serious doubt. Each new term may itself have a problem concerning the "metaphysical" status of its referent: whether it is a physical or a "spiritual" process. Another problem with this approach is that it often makes the concept of intelligence dependent on factors that may have no more than a casual relation to its meaning: a contextual connection, for example. While a dispositional analysis of intelligence would effectively rescue it from entrapment inside "the ghost in the machine" it would fail to do the concept the justice that the dualist seeks for it, and that is to make the observation that it appears to be more an episodic than a dispositional concept. It is in this connection that some philosophers take a critical view of Ryle's analysis. Peter Thomas Geach, for instance, claims that reports of mental acts are categorical and are not hypothetical or semi–hypothetical statements about overt behavior. He believes the dispositional account of psychological concepts to be on a level with the statement that opium puts people to sleep ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Broadway musicals: The Portrayal of Women through the Decades Broadway was one of the first forms of entertainment. Before there were television programs, or movies, there was Broadway. Broadway originated in New York in 1750, when actor–manager Walter Murray built a theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street. A musical would show about once every weekend. The shows were very male based, and would commonly show a relationship between young boys and their fathers. Women were slowly integrated into Broadway, and as society changed its point of view on women, so did theatre. The first strictly female–based shows were released in the 1950's. These musicals attracted more female–based audience members and ticket sales rose exponentially. Musicals such as The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady showed ... It showed that men were superior and that a young woman was supposed to be aloof, and not bold. Males have a significantly easier time training and controlling their voices than women do, which is part of the reason that female–based musicals became so popular. "On Broadway, although some female roles are narrow, demeaning, passive, or long–suffering and convey weakness, the performer sings with incredible strength. Listening to the female singing voice is a more complicated phenomenon. Visually, the character singing is the passive object of our gaze. But aurally, she is resonant; her musical speech drowns out everything in range. A singer, more than any other musical performer, stands before us having wrested the composing voice away from the lyricist and composer who wrote the score." Said Musicologist Carolyn Abbate (Wolf, p.31) Furthermore, the complexity of the female voices both alone, in duet, and group, has influenced the creation and production of numerous female–based musicals over the decades. When thinking of musical theatre, the most common idea is "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, and boy eventually gets the girl in the end." These aspects are what make musical theatre one of the most favored type of drama production. The difference between a play and a musical play is obviously the input of music and how the story is told. In plays, the emotions and actions are showcased through words and movement, but in musical theatre, the content can be expressed through dialogue as well as music and dancing. Musical theatre has quite an extensive history. They can be dated back to ancient Greece, around the 5th century BCE. However, the most noteworthy period of time, The Golden Age, for musicals was during the 1940s to the 1960s.
